Title: Triple Play Battery - Replacement? how to?
Post by: thegamemaker on January 13, 2014, 09:21:08 PM
Hi Guys,
My Triple Play is now failing to hold battery charge.
So is there a battery to replace it?
Where can I buy it? and how to replace it?
Thanks.

I'd check with tech support.

I have noticed that sometimes mine is very difficult to charge.  This occurs after letting it drain hard, e.g., leaving it on overnight when it was already low. It can take A LONG TIME to recharge after that, act flaky and appear to be non-functioning.  I thought I needed a new battery, too.  I have found two things that help:
  -  Don't plug in the receiver or run the FTP app.  They seem to interfere with its recovery & it doesn't recharge properly.
  -  Use the plug provided, not a USB port.

Do this and it will charge in a couple hours, only a little longer than normal.  It returns to normal functioning after that.

The new beta version of the app/firmware says it shuts itself down rather than drain the battery hard.  So I think this is a known issue.  From the release notes for the beta:
Quote"The controller will automatically power itself off at extremely low battery levels when performance of the device will be adversely affected by the low charge"

Quote-  Use the plug provided, not a USB port.

+1

What I would do is schedule 2 free days

Day #1 - turn the FTP transmitter on, and leave it on with no other connections, this should drain the battery.

Day #2, Connect the Fishman Supplied AC Power adapter to AC Power and to the FTP Transmitter and let it charge all day.

on Day #3 You should be back to normal.

Hi Again,
Followed your instructions and I thought it was fixed.
However there still seems to be a problem.
I fully charge it and then if I don't use it for about 3 days I come back and it won't turn on, as its gone flat.
Its kind of acting like its permanently turned on (and draining the battery) or somthing.

So anybody else got this problem?
Thanks.

No.  I would definitely contact Fishman Support.

Mine was very flaky for a while there.  It's better now.  A couple of lengthy cycles of fully charging with the plug (not USB) might have done it.  Or maybe the latest firmware upgrade, that says it won't let it drain down too hard.

Let us know what they say.

I am also having this battery issue. I'll try these suggestions, too. Thanks.

Further to this, I'm having the same issue with one of my FTPs but it is certainly not going to be covered by warranty after everything I've put it through. is there any source for a replacement battery? Googling the specs isn't giving up any gold :(

Is there no way to run this with wall power? Does it have to use just the battery?

Do you have the internal or external FTP?

I had a similar issue that was resolved after I reinstalled the FTP software; odd but true. So if you try this and it works please let us know.

I also recently had a problem with battery not holding a charge and looked into replacing it but it inexplicably cleared up within a week or two.   It seems like enough people are having this issue that it might not just be random.  Bug in the firmware?   FYI I have the internal fender fishman strat.

I tried the long charge and complete discharge again and it seems ok now, for now.
I also updated the transmitter firmware.
This charge problem has happened a few times over the last 18 months so I'm expecting it to occur again, probably when I least need it. FYI, it's an external unit. Thanks for the links :)

After several months of inaction, I decided to contact Fishman about the ongoing battery issue. I purchased my units outside of USA/Australia but I sought tech support through the US. They referred me to their Australian distributor 'Dynamic Music'. This is not an ideal outcome.

"We can source a new replacement battery from Fishman – cost for the part is $99.99 inc GST + $12.00 domestic freight.
Lead time would be around 2-3 weeks after order is placed. Please let me know if you'd like to go ahead with the order."

$111.99AU... ::) ????????

I checked out some other Li-Ion batteries but none seemed to be the right form factor to fit comfortably in the transmitter housing. The ebay price is about right though at under $10.00US. Anybody know a model that will fit?

Yes, thanks for the reply, Elantric. That's the same info as kindly listed previously. There is no mention of the original Seapromise battery dimensions so my concern was finding a model that would actually fit inside the FTP transmitter casing. I opened the unit the other day to see if any of the other batteries I have lying around would fit inside but all were too long or thick. So I closed it up again. I'll just take it out again and measure it.

11. Can the TriplePlay controller be used while it's charging, and can it be charged with standard USB chargers? Is the battery replaceable in the event that it wears out and can no longer hold a charge?

Yes, you can still use TriplePlay as you normally would while the controller is charging. An AC power supply is included with the unit in order to charge it without a computer. Yes, the controller could be sent to Fishman to have the battery replaced for a nominal charge, if necessary. However, if you keep the guitar from conditions of extreme heat and cold, the battery should last indefinitely.

Wow, your Google is better than my Google!  :)

Will look at those. For the record, I did contact Sara and Derek at Fishman. Sara was helpful with general Q&A kinda things but not being in the US makes for brickwalls when it comes to actual physical malfunctions/defects. Derek immediately pushed me over to Dynamic music in Australia who quoted me approx $100US for a battery. Unbelievable...yet simultaneously believable because this is Australia. Us Aussies may as well live on Mars.

For the record...  I strongly suggest sending it off to Fishman.

In a fit of DIY, I did my own.  It looked easy.  I have passable soldering skills.  I bought the battery online & it was here in a day.

It's smaller than it looks in these pix.  When I was done, it looked a little like I'd soldered it with a shovel & a blowtorch.

And getting it all back in the housing was a little like dealing with overstuffed luggage when returning from vacation...

It works!

But I wouldn't do it again.

I know this is a fairly old thread. I have a similar, albeit slightly different, problem.

On my Godin Session Custom FTP, not only does the battery not charge, but the battery charge light only goes on for a second. The guitar (and FTP) work fine with the charger plugged in, but without the charger, only the mag pickups work.

I'm going to take it to an Authorized Godin Service Center near me.

My Triple Play is now failing to hold battery charge.
I recently acquired an external FTP and FC-1 combo and found it to worked brilliantly, but let's face it, the wart is fugly.
Buoyed up with enthusiasm I searched for a Fender TriplePlay Strat in Australia. There were none available second-hand or new. Fender Australia had literally never heard of such a thing.  Neither had the Fishman dealer. I have come to conclude that they were never sold new in this country. Not to worry, I found a brand new one online from a big music store in our near neighbour Singapore. I threw a considerable amount of money at the problem (Duty, Shipping etc.) and last week a brand new black FTP Strat arrived on my doorstep. It's a thing of great beauty and I love it.
Only one little problem. The production date is turns out to be 2013. They didn't tell me that. It's still brand spanking new with all the gear in sealed plastic bags. But the battery on the FTP is stone dead. I tried to charge straight away and got a single flash of the green light then nothing. Left it on charge for 3 days. Nothing. It sat there in the store for 6 years, possibly left on.
So Fender Australia don't want know me as I've only got Singapore Malaysia Warranty.
Fishman Australia don't have any batteries to supply.
I could send it back to Singapore at my expense, but...
I could send it to Arizona at my expense, but...
The dealer in Singapore has agreed to try to find a battery but hasn't found anything yet...
I have resolved to try to solve this myself, so I thought I would post my progress here.
Here's a shot of my FTP Strat sent from Singapore before purchase with protective plastic still on. They didn't send one of he back of the head-stock.

Here's a close-up of the FTP unit on the back of the FTP Strat. The red light flashes when turned on and trying to connect by wireless to the receiver. The on/off switch is up in the on position. There should be a green light showing through just above the micro-USB plug while charging if the battery is accepting charge. Mine flashes on once and disappears. the transmitter works for about 10 secs while plugged in until it's out of charge. Then I get another green flash and it restarts. Unplugged it never gets started. The four wood screws in the corners are easily removed to access the FTP unit underneath.

Here's the FTP unit flipped out of the Strat. You can see four more screws holding the printed circuit board to the cover plate.

Here's the PC board with the four screws to be undone and a peek in underneath to see the battery. The wires connecting the PC board look rather delicate so I'm taking care not to break them.

After removing those four screws, there is a 8 pin plug mounted to the cover which has to be eased out slowly to reveal the battery. The cover comes away and has a small control unit attached. This shows the battery in situ and the underside of the cover with the control unit.

The battery is held at the edge by double sided tape. It can be carefully removed with a small flat screwdriver taking care not to damage the PC board. The battery unplugs at the white 2 pin connector on the right and allows the battery to be removed. The plug is labelled +Batt-.
The battery pack is labelled SAM F480. Li-ion 3.7V 900mAh.

My battery pack appears slightly different to others shown here. I'm assuming that it is derived from a SAMSUNG F480 phone. So I have ordered this one off eBay sold for the SAMSUNG F480. No dimensions were given in the eBay ad so I'm just hoping it will be a fit. the 1000mAh will not be an issue as it will just allow it to last longer with luck. When it arrives I will solder it up using the old connector. In the mean time the old battery is spending a few days in the freezer. You never know.

Update: My eBay battery has not arrived yet.  So after 3 days at -18 degrees  C, I tried the original battery again on charge. Just getting a green flash every 30 secs which is not very encouraging but might indicate a willingness to accept charge, so will leave on over nite and see how things progress. I'm not hopeful.

Well as expected the freezer trick failed.
But today my eBay F480 battery pack arrived. Unfortunately they have moved the contacts from the long side to the short side or "top" on the new battery. This means they almost collide with the flanges on the PC board that hold the battery on. This battery is not exactly the same as the one pictured in their ad which I posted above. The new battery pack is a bout a millimetre longer and slightly thinner than the old, just to make things more difficult.
Also I couldn't help noticing that the PC board is labelled incorrectly for +/-ve. Note the red wire which is +ve from the battery goes to the -ve side of the connector of the PC board labelled +Batt-. Check the photos above. This was rather disconcerting but I figured I would just connect it up the same way.
A few things to keep in mind here. These Li ion are notoriously susceptible to high temperatures so it is important to keep soldering heat to a minimum. I carefully scratched and tinned the outer contacts and having removed the old connector from the old battery, I connected the red wire to +ve on the new battery and the black to the -ve contact. I also had to carefully plan the routing of the wiring as now it had to wrap back over the connector since the wires were soldered to the "top" of the battery instead of the side.

Assembly is the reverse of dismantling as they say in the classics, but take care with that fine wiring. Before screwing the unit back in I decided to check that the new battery accepted charge. You can see in this photo that the green light is now on steadily showing charging unlike the single flash I used to get. Yah!
Having screwed everything back together I have put the unit on charge overnight and hopefully I will have a functional FTP Strat tomorrow finally.
It is worth noting you can still get a brand new FTP Strat from Singapore in Nov 2019 even if they never did get me a battery under warranty. They still had a 3TS last time I checked. It would probably be worth asking them to check the battery first, but I got out of jail on this for about $10 USD so not a deal breaker. It could be purely psychological but I find the FTP Strat has a great feel and looks great in black. It's really special. If you are currently using an FTP wart, jump in for the FTP Strat, you won't regret it.

I have the same problem. I just emailed support now.

"Hi, I live in Brazil and I have a bad triple play transmitter board.

Sometimes it turns on, most of the time it´s bad.

I know it´s not the battery. I charged it outside, and measured with a multimeter.

Also when I plug the charger the led gives a 1 second single flash.

It´s like the board does not boot.

Could you provide a schematic so a technician could fix it?

Or a clue to what to look for?

I greatly appreciate the help! Thanks.

Quote from: kenact on February 10, 2019, 11:13:04 AMI know this is a fairly old thread.

Hi guys!
Well, I also have to replace the battery on my Triple Play, but once I opened it, I don't know how to remove the volume pot?
It seems to me that I just have to pull it a bit harder, but I don't want to break anything so I want to check with some of you who have already replaced the battery.

Thanks!

Need help with FTP battery.
Replacing it for the 2nd time got one wire out from the heat shrink tubing of the battery connector wires. Had to remove tubing isolation and found some kind of smd element inside (don't know, if it is a ferrite bead, inductor/choke, dual diode or else) with 4 contacts. Tried to re-solder the wire, but it was not holding at all, in the process the second wire went off this component. Then I took everything to general electronics service center to give it a try with soldering station with different soldering fluxes available to them. I was told that they could not solder the wires to it.
In the end I got in touch with fishman support - but they refused to help with identication/soldering method of this component. Wrote to distrubutors in the neighboring country if the could help me with a new battery - waiting for reply, but the easiest/cheapest way of course it would be solder or buy this new component & re-solder it completely as I have 2x AB423643 batteries of a good quality already. But I don't know what component it is/it's specs.

Thanks for the fast reply. I'm in 'third world' and don't have issues with finding the battery itself, it's not needed - the question is more about original FTP battery wire with a strange component on it under the heat shrink. This posted 503040 seems to be 5mm 30x40 LiPo battery, not sure about the connector, but it definitely has NO THIS component on wires. As I don't know the function of it, if it is required or not, I can solder bypassing it freely, but if it is critical (some kind of dual diode or dual resistor) - I don't think it is a good idea to bypass it. For some reason Fishman put it on battery wires, maybe it is more 'mediocre' component like EMI filter=ferrite bead for filtering hi-frequency noises that could affect note recognition or life of CPU. Everyone can find similar on the wires. Marked it on the pics from users posted earlier. Mine is more narrow, others - seems to be more square-like. Maybe somebody know what it is inside, and for what purpose

Surprised to hear that your battery doesn't have this component because all photos of 'tripleplay guts' I managed to find had this component under the heat shrink tubing between the connector and battery itself, and of course it is plug & play. In this case I can assume that it is not 'quite necessary' and can be bypassed. Or if you are confident that it is EMI filter I can TRY to replace it with some Murata ones I found in local shop, probably like BLM21BB050SN1D or DLW21HN900SQ2L (on pics) or else. Just to have to check voltage on output of the connector after soldering. I've measured FTP battery output in past and it was 3.86V in my case.

Probably it is not useless heat tubing. I've highlighted it on the picture below. On older FTP's it is more narrow, on newer - more square-like

Additional EMI emissions only occur during battery charging from the micro USB power connection

Under normal Tripleplay operation under internal  battery power the EMI filter is irrelevant.

You can omit it
