I saw the Hendrix Experience at Westchester County Center in spring of 1968.  It was one or two days after the MLK assassination and no one was in a very positive state of mind.  He played a Fender Jazzmaster (!) most of the evening and  stuck to a bluesy vein.

I attended this show at Curtis Hixon Hall, Tampa FL November 1968

Review from St Petersburg FL paper:

The 'Experience' Offers Bad Trip (Nov. 25, 1968, The Evening Independent)

By Kay Donahue, Independent Reviewer

Jimi Hendrix stopped singing in the middle of a phrase of Purple Haze, turned his back on the audience and finished the song as an instrumental. Bass player Noel Redding moved to the microphone and offered a few adlibed words of the song in a futile attempt to dull the impact of Hendrix's obvious anger.

Purple Haze was finally finished. Hendrix turned to the audience, slowly put down his gutitar, replaced the usual peace sign with a gesture using his middle finger and strode off stage. Though he'd been performing almost an hour, his action was not the normal climax of a concert. The audience sat in stunned silence then there was a mixture of applause and catcalls.

What motivated Hendrix's unorthodox behavior? He told the policeman who escorted him to the car the audience was bad and just wouldn't react. During the performance he complained about the number of people taking pictures saying, "It's too bad you spent all that money for one picture. I thought you came for sound."

Regardless of the cause, Hendrix's behavior was inexcusable.

For the second time in four months, he packed Curtis Hixon (his first concert was a sellout with several thousand turned away and Saturday's concert was a near sellout). And for the second time he failed to give the audience what they came to see -- that Hendrix magic and excitement so evident in his spring appearance at the Miami Pop Festival.

"The Jimi Hendrix Experience" has been on the road for more than two years and the members are tired. This was the problem at the last concert.

Hendrix's obvious good mood during interviews before the performance promised a better performance than the one in August. The presentation of Fire as the show's opener indicated a good show to come. It had the driving excitement that kept Miami listeners on their feet all through his performance last spring.

As the flashbulbs continued to light the house with psychedelic effect and the audience sat silently listening to his sound, Hendrix became angry. As his anger increased, the quality of his performance decreased. By the end of the show he was a stranger to the crowd -- an experience they didn't especially dig.

Hendrix can put on a good show -- an exciting experience in musical experimentation. For some reason neither performance on the Suncoast neared the quality of his concert in Miami.

Maybe Hendrix should decide two years on the road is long enough and take a rest -- for his audience's sake.

I heard him in Syracuse NY in 68. He seemed bored or tired. That's all I remember, if you know what I mean. I always thought he was better in the studio, from hearing his live recordings. He did have a blues touch that I've never heard from anyone else. A couple of Robin Trower's early songs have that dreamy Hendrix feel...

That was an interesting review. Audience members can be real pains for performers.

Think about the Beatles having to give up live performances cuz they couldn't hear themselves through the screams.

Pat Metheny  talks about people filming his performances and then putting them up on YouTube. When an artist  is aware that they are being filmed, it interferes with the improvisational moment. And if the artist feels like it wasn't his best effort, then the artist would not want that presented all over YouTube.

And then there's Steve Howe having to repeatedly tell an audience member To shut his yak and listen.

Can't blame Jimi one bit for not wanting flashbulbs going off in his face.

Heres my fave Jimi Live piece. This is from the second show 1st of January 1970 -  The same song from the first show wasnt nearly as good as this take. Ive never heard anyone duplicate the intro for this. Ive heard close covers but this take he nailed the whole tune. Very inspired.

QuoteBand Of Gypsys-Machine Gun (1970)
One of the great recorded moments in musical history, if you can dig it.

Jimi Hendrix
Billy Cox on Bass
Buddy Miles On Drums

Recorded on the 1st of January 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York. This version was put on the Band Of Gypsys album.

That I cannot say.  Some details have been lost from my brain over 50 years.

I saw him 4 times , twice in Detroit, and at the Miami and the Atlanta pop festivals. Man what a loss

Tell me how was the experience?

whippinpost91850

Miami Pop Festival was great on Saturday night, Sunday he never played because of the rain. Atlanta  Pop Festival was just magical.

First time in Detroit he and the band were also great, not so much the second time. He appeared very tired or maybe just high

Ive met folks who jammed with Hendrix
http://ultimateclassicrock.com/jimi-hendrix-guitar-fire/

and in 1983 I once worked on this Hendrix Astoria Strat guitar when Frank Zappa wanted new Dan Armstrong Green Ringer installed

( Several LA Guitar techs worked on this Strat between 1969-1992, Midget Sloatman, John Caruthers, Red Rhodes

Correct - one in the same and only Hendrix Strat in the Zappa Estate
https://www.guitarplayer.com/gear/frank-zappa-see-the-guitars-and-amps-behind-his-greatest-recordings-video

there has been  debate as if it was from Hendrix Miami pop festival or Astoria - - I heard this guitar was acquired by Frank Zappa in 1970 through his management as a body only - and over the years there have been many different necks bolted onto it.

Before I touched this guitar, the story goes that  Rex Bogue  performed a large"bathtub" route  under the pickguard to accommodate various different Strat pick guards with different electronics

The Dan Armstrong Green Ringer installation  mod defaulted to me when I was at Valley Arts, Studio City, CA in 1983   - because everyone else in town was too busy, and Frank wanted to use it for a new recording session.

Play what inspires you!
