Holly crap! if we can get the Windows 8.1 drivers to work in a unsigned driver mode and we are mostly normal guys.... why can't Roland's software engineers have a new driver upon the release of Windows 10? Did these guys go to school? don't they get paid 3 times as much money as us? I am really shocked that this kind of utter failure in the business word can be excepted.....

Jim Williams

I agree with the Linux thing. I am stuck in a comfort zone with Windows because so much of the software I have bought and paid for is Windows software and making music is easy to do. I know all about WINE and most of that software works well with it. It's just that change is difficult and I don't like to get out of that comfort zone with my computer.... but it sure sounds like a great idea.

mooncaine

Yeah, comfort zone is the reason I stick with the Mac now, too, not for any particular enthusiasm, but just because, well, it's what I've already got and it does work quite well. Till this, anyway.

aliensporebomb

Not happy about the 99 situation but understandable.  I will create a El Capitan boot drive to test this and see if the driver works there.  If not I have a plan B.  I don't really need to be on the latest OS anyway.

I agree that this is mostly politics and false obsolescence.  If you can't get drivers for a particular device why they might as well just buy a new replacement device.

And remember that in Japan you can't buy used electronics so their views towards obsolescence might be changing as a result of that ridiculous law.

....if they are making the 99 obsolete they need to bring out an (enhanced/updated) replacement then :-)

I opened a ticket via support at Roland, and the US team sent the Japan office this request to get Win 10 64-bit USB support for VG-99.

It is a pinnacle of design in Roland's product line, and astounding if they would not publish this. Let's wait and hope for the best!

*   When using a touch-enabled PC, replace the words "click" and "right-click" in this document with "tap" and "press and hold", respectively.
System requirements

Operating System
Microsoft® Windows® 10 (64-bit Edition/32-bit Edition)
*   Windows 10 Mobile is not supported.
Computer
Windows-compatible PC equipped with USB port
*   This product cannot be used with a USB 3.0 port that is not compatible with USB 2.0 specification.
*   If this product does not work correctly when connected to a USB 3.0 port, you will need to connect it to a USB 2.0 port.
*   Even if connected to a USB 3.0 port, the performance of the product will not change.
*   This driver cannot be used in a virtual Windows environment, such as Hyper-V or Virtual PC.
*   Mac computers running Microsoft Windows are not supported.
Other
Internet connection
*   The Internet connection is needed to download the driver.
Cautions and Limitations

Sound interruption or other less-than-perfect outcomes may be experienced if your computer's performance and specifications are somewhat inadequate. The types of applications you use and the way in which you use them can also influence the experience you receive.
If the PC is started up while the VG-99 is still connected to the PC with its power turned on, the driver may not be loaded properly and you may not be able to use the VG-99. In such cases, connect the VG-99 to another USB port or turn on the power of VG-99 after the PC starts up.
If the VG-99 does not work correctly after resuming from Sleep mode, you should exit all applications that use the VG-99, and then turn the power of the VG-99 off and on again.
If the USB cable is disconnected and reconnected while the VG-99 is in use, or if the power of the VG-99 is turned off, then on again, it may stop operating correctly. If this occurs, after resuming, you should exit all applications that use the VG-99, and turn the power of the VG-99 off, then on again.
If your computer was experiencing a heavy processing load, such as when accessing a CD-ROM Drive or network while the VG-99 was being used, the VG-99 may no longer operate correctly. If this occurs, stop the playback or recording, then try starting playback or recording over again. If you are still unable to play back or record, quit all programs that are using the VG-99, then turn the VG-99 off and then on again.
Audio clicks and pops may occur during playback or recording if you connect or disconnect other USB devices (such as USB memory) or turn another USB device on/off while using the VG-99.
In some cases, you may not obtain the expected level of performance if you're using a USB-connected hard disk at the same time as the VG-99. Do not use a USB-connected hard disk as the storage destination for the audio that you're playing back or recording.
Installation

About the items in the Settings dialog box

Audio Buffer Size
You can adjust the audio input/output buffer size. (By default, this will be the sixth position from the left.)
Decreasing the buffer size will shorten the latency and improve realtime performance, but might make it more likely that you will experience audio clicks and pops, depending on your computer's processing power and the song data load.
Increasing the buffer size will lengthen the latency, but will make audio streaming more stable, and it will be less likely for audio clicks and pops to occur.
In general, you'll probably want to decrease the buffer size for better realtime performance if you're playing a software synthesizer in real time, or if you're monitoring an audio input that's being passed through your DAW software.
Conversely, you can increase the buffer size to prevent audio clicks and pops if you're recording or playing back song data that contains numerous tracks and presents a heavy processing load.
By changing the buffer size as appropriate for your situation, you can obtain the right balance between realtime performance and audio streaming stability.
* Note!
If you use an application with an audio equipment test function, after changing the buffer size, carry out a test.

ASIO Buffer Size
This is the minimum buffer size that can be set by the ASIO application.
*   Depending on the application you're using, there may be other buffer sizes that can be set in addition to the minimum buffer size, and the buffer size shown here might not match the actual buffer size.
For details on setting and checking the buffer size, refer to the owner's manual for your application.

"Use Smaller ASIO Buffer Size" check box
If this check box is selected, the buffer size when using ASIO-compatible applications will be made smaller.
If you experience pops or clicks when this check box is selected, deselect this check box.
*   You must deselect this check box when adjusting the "Audio Buffer Size."

"Use ASIO Direct Monitor" check box
Check this if you are using the ASIO Direct Monitor function with an ASIO-compatible application.

The "Light Load" check box
Normally, you should leave this check box cleared.
*   The modified setting will take effect after you turn the power of the VG-99 on/off.

Just tried to use the VG-99 editor on W10 and no luck. The little box came up saying the driver was installed correctly but it doesnt show in the midi setup in the editor or librarian. Ill have to try again tonight after Ive finished the gig. Hopefully try two will be the ticket. I dont need the 99 for audio, just MIDI for the editor and Librarian. Anybody else get this working? Ive been to the Roland site and read all the instructions. It would be nice if they had a downloadable driver setup like they had with W7.

Theres always some niggly garbage that needs to be done.

"On Windows, close the "Sound" settings screen of the Control Panel and all

I have no idea what so ever as what " close the "Sound" settings screen of the Control Panel..." means. I dont even have it open to begin with. How can you close something that isnt open in the first place?

Theres always some niggly garbage that needs to be done.

"On Windows, close the "Sound" settings screen of the Control Panel and all
running applications"

If open - Close this panel

Thanks. That was never open in the first place. This just isnt in the cards for me for this computer. Ill have to use my old W7 laptop for the editor as it will not work in W10.

Often its due to some USB 3.0 ports not being fully USB 2.0 compliant

2 years ago I picked a few high end Asus ROG laptops because these were among the very last to offer true USB 2.0 ports (Crucial for most Audio/MIDI gear I use )

Also the step of waiting for the Microsoft distributed Roland VG-99 USB Driver for Windows 10 to install can take hours in some locations of the globe

You must have a high speed internet connection too

if that does not work

then continue with the MANUAL DRIVER INSTALL PROCEDURE

( Be sure the VG-99 USB Mode is set to "ADVANCED MODE"

--
Install the driver manually
Depending on the Internet connectivity, the driver may not be installed automatically.
If this is the case, follow the procedure below to install the driver.
Turn on the power of VG-99 and connect it to the computer using a USB cable.
Right-click the start button and then click "Device Manager".
In the View menu, click "Devices by type".
Click "Sound, video and game controllers" or "Other devices" to display the VG-99 device.
When the VG-99 device appears, right-click it, and then select "Update Driver Software".
Select "Search automatically for updated driver software".
Your PC starts searching for the driver, and the driver is installed automatically.( this may take a long time!)
The installation is completed if the "Windows has successfully updated your driver software" message is displayed. Click "Close".

If the "System Settings Change" dialog box appears, click [Yes] to restart Windows.

Ill have to give it a shot when I get home as Im on a boat in the middle of the North Sea and the internet is slow. Also the laptop I have is an Asus Rog. It has one USB 2.0 port so the manual says. It may be the laptop. We shall see. Ill just have to be careful with the 99 and hope nothing disastrous happens to it patch wise before I get home. I should have checked this before I hit the road. I just assumed that this would be an easy install. I was wrong!

also remember the Roland VG-99 Editor or VG-99 Librarian WILL work with any generic USB <> MIDI adapter cable  - just choose that cable as the MIDI I/O on the Roland VG-99 Editor settings panel

Ive figured it out that some app Ive installed since I first put the 99 driver on has messed it up somehow. I found an Image i did just after I installed the 99 editor and librarian that works, so when I get home Ill start frm that point and re install the other apps and see what one screws the 99 driver
