I guess that's my question really. Let's say I want to run it all into an active PA speaker (possibly stereo) and use as little cables as possible. Any recommendations? I'm quite good with raspberry pi, so midi routing might be an option.

Are you using a GK cable splitter? (cable or GK A/B box)
guitar GK-3 > GK split > GP-10 GK input + GR-20 GK input > GP-10 L/Mono out > GR-20 Aux/guitar input > GR-20 output > P.A. desk input.

Set the GR-20 EXP peal to do synth/guitar (GP-10) mix.
I would run the GP-10 and GR-20 pedals separate (no midi control).
Free "GR-55 FloorBoard" editor software from https://sourceforge.net/projects/grfloorboard/

I guess a splitter cable bid simplest in this case? The gr-20 can't blend the guitar sound in from the gp-10 can it? I mean I know I can control synth volume, but will the gp-10 always be running straight through the gr-20? Also what happens to the gk-3 switches? Do they control both simultaneously? I can see this causing problems.

I use a splitter cable between the GP 10 and GR 20 , ( GPK 2 cable)

. I then take the headphone out of the GR 20 and send it to the AUX in of the GP 10. The synth volume is controlled by the GR 20 Expression pedal. I use a GC 1 Roland ready Stratocaster, and when using nylon or acoustic models of the GP 10 , I do not need to use the S1 and S2 buttons to change pickups. In case I need a Stratocaster tone, simply drop the selector switch to guitar and use the normal pickup  switch. Leaving the S1 and S2 for the GR 20 functions.

So does that cable only send switch info to one of the pedals by design?

The  diodes prevent damage to the
connected GK 13 Processors but still allow GK3 S1/S2 switches to function for both units
