Here's one for you guys.I upgraded to 2.0 and hated it so I used line 6 monkey to roll back to 1.90 and the moment it accepted the roll back the power went off and couldn't be turned on again with either the battery or the hook up to the HD500. So I took it back to my music store and they couldn't figure any reason for it and replaced the guitar with a new one.Excellent I thought and brought it home and hooked it up to line 6 monkey to see which version of flash memory I was dealing with Line 6 monkey informed me it was version 1.71 so I downloaded version 1.90 and installed it to upgrade the guitar as far as I wanted to. Well as usual it to a few times for line 6 monkey and the variax to get the 1.90 completed and the moment it showed in the line 6 monkey the transfer was complete the power turned off on the new guitar and can't seem to be accessed.
Has anyone else had similar problems or heard  of such a thing?
If so answer quick if you could because I now have to take back a 2nd guitar and complain. So any ammunition as far as the cause of this recurring problem would be really, really helpful.
Thanks
Duffy

I suspect you have a corrupt 1.90 VXF file. Are you using Line 6 Monkey to find a locally stored 1.90 VXF firmware file?
Use the Line 6 MD5 Checksum utility to verify your VXF file is good.
If you are at FW 2.0, you can NOT directly install the FW 1.90 VXF file.
You must revert all the way back to FW 1.71 VXF file  - BEFORE you install the FW 1.90 VXF.

Also be sure the Volume knob is turned up - and Not at "0" during any FW update procedure, as this enables auto power off on Tyler Variax guitars and WILL corrupt the firmware update process.
Be sure you are following these Variax firmware update procedure instructions exactly

If you have already installed HD 2.0 FW , Dont use monkey to "roll back" to FW1.82, or FW1.90 - many reports of problems on the Line6 Forums.
Use the step by step procedure below for a reliable / trouble free FX 1.90 installation on your Tyler Variax.
Its best to revert all the way back to FW 1.71 VXF file  - BEFORE you install the FX 1.90 VXF.

NOTE: Line 6 Monkey 1.62 is required in order to install this firmware update.

The v1.9 firmware update for James Tyler(r) Variax(r) features enhanced palm muting for a more natural response to muted guitar parts and aggressive playing styles. It also provides faster updates with additional error checking.

For JTV-89 Customers Only: In addition to the 28 electric, acoustic and eclectic instruments, you also get five high-gain models exclusive to JTV-89 loaded into custom bank 1. Each model is based on a different pickup position, and delivers high-gain guitar tone while allowing you to access drop tunings, custom Dream Rig configurations and more.

The five high-gain models come with a couple caveats: 1. For the time being, they are not editable in Workbench, nor will you be able to mix and match the body or pickup models. 2. For the time being, the High Gain Model is hard-wired into the Custom 1 bank. You will not be able to overwrite the Custom 1 bank from the guitar or from Workbench.

NOTE: (when updating from 1.71): If you've loaded your guitar with custom models and would like to retain your current custom banks and/or custom models, please sync with Variax Workbench and save your custom model set. You will be able to re-load your models from Workbench after you've completed the update.

Elantric

You are welcome.

Ive had to do this myself and gathering all the info in one place should help many others who arent digging the HD 2.0 firmware.

When I connect my JTV 59 to the Line 6 Monkey and click on the rollback button only 2.00, 1.90, and 1.82 are listed.  No 1.71.   ???

Glad you and your Line6 Dealer arrived at a good solution to your "problems"!

Line 6 support has been very good in my experience - AFTER your issues have been fully explained to them.

BTW - Your earlier post is here

Glad I could help!  I split off my full detailed revert procedure into a new thread here:

I can't thank you enough for this post.
I was disappointed in the Spank, Chime, and and Acoustic tones with a brand new guitar with up to date Firmware.
After following this guide I like the sounds a lot better.

Thank you

eranro

Thanks Elantric!

Just UPGRADED from 2.x to 1.9 using your guitar and they guitar sounds AMAZING!
In my opinion, all models sound more "alive". The Spank model finaly sounds as it should and the acoustics are great.
Also, the string balance problem is gone. All strings are balanced as they should while in the 2.x, I had massively reduce some strings in order to get this balance.

I'm in 1.9 and not looking back! Thanks!

How odd.

Early revision board programmed as an 89F,....

v1.70 Alt Tune works

v1.71 Alt Tune works

Newer revision board programmed as an 89F,....

v1.70 Alt Tune does not work

Newer revision board programmed as something else, like a JTV-69,...

v1.70 Alt Tune works

Since the 89F came out during a later Firmware revision,

and its earliest Firmware version would be a later one. That might

explain why v1.71 worked, it's a later version program.

If this were a newer board and a v2.00+, in another JTV, it would be considered a bug.

But an early version Firmware in a later version guitar,... not the case.

With a Variax Standard being the way it is, Firmware won't roll back beyond 2.00 program.

Apparently, the 89F was not meant to be rolled back that far.

Thanks.

Do you think it's safe to apply this procedure to a 2.2 jtv ?
Thanks in advance

I would not recommend doing the re revert to FW1.90 in 2022

FW1.90 is not compatible with Workbench HD, Helix, Firehawk.

The revert was in reaction to the 1st "HD" firmware 2.00 Variax.

But latest version solved bulk of the complaints, adds many features not availale on FW1.90 ( like using the Variax Vol & Tone as remote FX Control on Helix, and only latest firmware supports the superior Workbench HD
The only scenario reverting to FW1.90 is attractive is if you still use a Vetta or POD XTLive

Nicolher

Thanks for the answer
I still have to dig a bit more, I'm not very found of the strat sound (2&4) on the jtv (compared to the 600) so I thought of downgrading, but it seems risky, not very useful with a  helix, so I'll probably try in workbench to get more "quack" out of this strat !
