Hey, I'm thrilled by the growing creative energy around here. I think we are starting to get over the doom & gloom and have fun with whatever equipment we like and share it with other like minded forumites! A great big THANK YOU!!! to all of you for making this happen. I am very happy.

So happy in fact that my mind is buzzing with additional possibilities. I started looking at various web based services that support or make possible real-time jam-sessions and collaborative recording opportunities.

I would like to identify the best service out there, subscribe to it and open a permanent channel. With this in place and our shoutbox to make arrangements to meet then we can imagine folks getting together and jamming real time or simply sharing their chops and/or sounds with one another. How do you all feel about this? Do you see yourselves actually trying it out?

I am looking at the following service called Ninjam ... http://www.ninjam.com/jamfarm/index.php

Anyone have experience in this area? Any other service I should look at? Thanks in advance for your input.

This is a great list. Thanks for putting it together. I think path forward is to perhaps brainstorm our requirements / expectations so we can them select the best service / product that seems to meet most of the agreed our requirements & expectations.

Here goes what I have off the top of my head :

Easy computer based hookup for GR3/4 + RIP + DF and/or VG99 or other GK based equipment.
Minimal compression related loss.
Minimal latency.
Easy to use & figure out.
Does not own any of the performances created using the service and does not impose any copyright etc.

What else can you add to this list? Thanks

Functionality would be nice ;)

When i tried this once before 3 years ago - the latency was a joke. - it was more like  - listen to a 20 second long Loop - with stuttering every 6 seconds, and try to play your bits on the third try around.

Each of the online collaboration websites claim to have "superior low latency real time processing" - but  the reality is that Real Time Jamming is still constrained by physics and size of the pipe at each end.

If you omit "real time collaboration" - you may actually have something more productive than simply mindless riffing.

Here's another alternative

Great idea. This also resolves the time zone issue. Almost similar concept to turn by turn remote chess game. I like it.

Great idea MCK. I looked into the JamLink box. They're runnin a special right now.....normally $300. Buy one get $45 off, buy two get $120 off.

I tested my upload/download against their requirements (1500KPS download, 1000KPS upload). My download speed was 8964, but my upload speed was only 364.....one third of the minimum.

I like the idea of this JamLink box tho.  :)

Indeed - the major problems is that "broadband" infrastructure speed in most USA homes is fast for downloads, but bog slow for uploads.

This equals a major source of timing delays when trying to get a word in edgewise during Skype calls. - remember these are not full audio bandwidth either.

If bandwidth was somewhat constant it might work, but mine sure isn't -- my upload speeds (I use Comcast) are actually fairly consistent at 2-3 Mbps but download can be as good as 10 and as low as 0.1!!!!! Drives me crazy at times.

All this reminds me how "blessed" I am in this department living in Japan. Just to tease you all... I can watch a HD movie streamed from iTunes live. Don't have to wait for he download to finish but if i did it would normally take only about 15 minutes for say 6 to 8 gigs... upload speed I need to check... I am sure its ok. I have fiber all the way to my home. Gosh I will miss this when I move away from Japan one day. There you go. My moment of boasting is over... :P
