No Driver required to update Firmware- because after the "Hold down [ WRITE ] button and turn on the SY-1000 power" sequence, the SY-1000 presents itself as a USB Class Compliant FAT Storage Drive - ( essentially a USB Thumb Drive) that any modern  OS  can R/W

I know 1st hand there is a specific order to follow - USB Driver and Boss Tone Studio will NOT function until After you first update to FW-1.03 -

Why wont SY-1000 USB 64 bit Core Audio  / MIDI Driver work on my macOS 10.14 / 10.15?

Boss Support wrote>
SY-1000 USB MIDI trouble caused by interference by 3rd party USB MIDI driver.

To meet security requirement for mac OS 10.14, our USB MIDI Driver works only for 64bit MIDI Server.

If you use 32bit USB MIDI Driver, MIDI Server works as 32bit and USB MIDI for SY-1000 doesn't work.

For your information, your MIDI Server was boot as 32bit.

Roland/BOSS USB drivers you installed to your Mac work as 64bit.

But some 3rd party USB Driver works as 32bit and make interference to our USB MIDI Driver.

If you could uninstall all of 32bit MIDI driver, your MIDI Server works as 64bit, SY-1000 USB MIDI works.

QuoteWHY USE THE BOSS SY-1000
For many its all about the play feel of the specific Guitar Synth - the VG-8, VG-88, VG-99 SY-1000 use the strings as the source and react immediately to your playing technique - no false triggered random notes and no latency delays as occurs on GUITAR to MIDI
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=14088.0

The GK IN =  7 channel analog inputs

FX Loop is Mono  - the Sub and Main outs and Headphones are Stereo

The USB is 8 Channel Out, 8 Chanel IN

Realize the Guitar to MIDI on SY-1000 is a very separate function- and unrelated to any internal sound generation.

A New Era of Guitar Synth Innovation
The SY-1000 is the most advanced guitar/bass synth we've ever made, hands down. Custom DSP delivers six times the processing muscle of the SY-300, and the newly developed sound engine leverages the power of GK independent string processing for ultra-articulate performance, lightning-fast response, instantly variable tuning, sound panning/layering, and much more.

Deep Sound Design Tools
A standard SY-1000 patch includes three simultaneous instruments—each with a number of distinctive types to choose from—and you can combine and layer them for an endless range of sounds. Fed by the 13-pin GK input, every instrument offers an extensive set of parameters for tone shaping, mixing, and tuning. A normal ¼-inch input is available as well, letting you blend regular guitar/bass pickup sounds alongside the three instruments.

Ultra-Expressive Dynamic Synth
The all-new Dynamic Synth takes guitar synthesis further than it's ever gone. GK processing and speedy DSP track your instrument's characteristics with precision detail, allowing you to craft sounds never before possible. Choose from ten oscillator waveforms—sine, triangle, PWM, three saw types (including Roland's famous supersaw), and more. Then shape the sound with six different filters, amplifier control, two LFOs, and two powerful step sequencers. Optimum performance is realized with the GK input, but it's also possible to play the Dynamic Synth via the normal guitar/bass input.

Two Step Sequencers Bring Sounds to Life
After shaping a basic sound with the Dynamic Synth, the fun's just starting—with two step sequencers, you can infuse it with movement to create complex textures that pulse, breathe, and groove. Each sequencer features 16 customizable steps that control pitch, filter, and amplitude independently. Better still, every step includes 13 different envelope curves for unprecedented sonic control. And by stacking three Dynamic Synths together, you can build massive moving sounds with three oscillators and six separate step sequencers!

OSC Synth and GR-300
Complementing the powerful Dynamic Synth are two additional synth instruments. OSC Synth is an analog-style engine with lots of filter options, full ADSR control, and high-definition sound with the discrete GK input. Also included is a perfect sonic recreation of the Roland GR-300, the legendary 1980s analog guitar synth used by some of the world's most influential guitarists.

Advanced Guitar/Bass Modeling and Poly FX
The SY-1000 doesn't stop at synthesis—it also features refreshed instrument modeling derived from historic BOSS and Roland GK gear. A large selection of electric, acoustic, and bass guitar types are available, each with independent tuning, EQ, virtual amp settings, and more. There's also a highly expressive VIO Guitar instrument, which alters the input signal's envelope and harmonic characteristics to create tones reminiscent of bowed instruments. Finally, the cool Poly FX instrument delivers richly textured voices with high-res definition only possible with GK processing.

Flagship-Class Effects and Interface
The SY-1000's signal processing and user interface are derived from BOSS's flagship GT-1000 multi-effects, lauded for its exceptional audio quality and simple operation. Shape sounds any way you like with a huge palette of effects, plus ultra-responsive guitar and bass amps. Quickly edit instruments and effects, change routings, create parallel chains, and more via the large LCD and hands-on knobs. And to speed up your patch workflow even more, you can save favorite instrument and effect setups in ready-to-go Variation libraries.

Configurable Control
By default, the SY-1000's eight footswitches select patches, banks, and two control assignments. But you can easily reassign them to nearly any function you want. There's also a Manual mode for fast on/off access to the three instruments and normal input. Up to four external footswitches or two expression pedals are supported, and MIDI I/O is provided as well. The Main and Sub outputs are normally used for mixed stereo signals, but can also be configured as four discrete outputs, complete with dedicated EQ on each. And with the moveable effects loop, you can smoothly integrate all your external gear.

Record Tracks and Play MIDI Instruments via USB
The SY-1000's USB audio/MIDI interface opens a world of creative options with your favorite DAW. With the GK input, you're able to record each of your instrument's strings to separate audio tracks, either processed live or captured dry for later "re-synth" processing through the SY-1000. And with the Guitar-to-MIDI/Bass-to-MIDI function, you can use your axe to play soft synths, record MIDI sequences, input notation data, and more.

How do you change the display options for the size of the patch number as described above?  Can't find it in the manual.
Thanks!

Push the right arrow button under the page heading on the SY-1000 device.

Search on "NORMAL" in the Reference Manual

See Page 13
NORMAL PATCH - Patches for a conventional guitar (bass) that is connected to the GUITAR INPUT. These can be used even if you don't have a divided pickup. You can also use these patches with the conventional guitar (bass) signal (normal pickup) that is routed through the divided pickup. If you're using Normal patch, the GK icon goes dark. * DYNAMIC SYNTH is the only INST TYPE that can be selected for normal patches.

Anyone who has the unit.
And has done this.

Looking at the settings for USB routing
There is no DRY-GUITAR as on the GP-10

What setting did you use to record the unprocessed stings to a daw?

Review the USB Audio section in the Reference Manual

Can the normal pickup 1/4" input be used as input into the OSC without using the hex input? Similar to how the SY-300 works?

Looking at the signal diagrams, the "Normal" input goes through a different path, then the manual states the following for the INST block "This is the sound engine section that generates sound based on the performance data from the divided pickup and the audio input from the
guitar (bass).
"  - does this mean it works like the SY-300 as input to INST if set to OSC?

???
Yes- below is separate 1/4" Normal Pickup Guitar Input ONLY Patch signal routing resources.
the input source is switchable from:

* the 1/4" Guitar Input

or
* the Normal Guitar signal feed on GK 13 ( Pin 7)

I wonder if at some time "Midi 2.0" protocol might be introduced.

Roland Synthesizer Converts Guitar Sound

Roland will launch the "BOSS" brand synthesizer "SY-1000" in February. This is a new model of the product called "Guitar Synthesizer", which can be connected to an electric guitar and played like a synthesizer. The sound is more powerful than the conventional type. The planned price is around 110,000 yen.
The company aims to sell 5,000 units in Japan and overseas within one year from its release.

Expressive power spreads because three different sounds can be layered

Unlike a keyboard-type synthesizer that plays on the keyboard, it converts the sound of a guitar or bass guitar into a synthesizer sound. Use an optional connector and cable for connection.

The tone has been improved compared to the conventional type, and up to three different sounds can be layered. You can play the guitar and organ at the same time by playing one guitar. It also has an effector function that can add effects such as reverberation and fluctuation to the sound.

I plan to create a SY-1000 Navigation Spreadsheet, to indicate the hierarchical location of each parameter on each LCD menu  screen for rapid patch creation / tweaking at live gig.   based upon the SY-1000 Reference Manual

https://static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/SY-1000_reference_eng01_W.pdf

So far a few observations

"INST BLOCK "VIO GUITAR" mode  has a  "HARMO" setting - but this is NOT a Harmonizer - instead its for "adding overtones (harmonics) to the sound specified in the GUITAR block." (Page 40)

And the INST Block when set to  "DYNAMIC SYNTH, OSC SYNTH" has a "AMP" setting - but this is not Guitar AMP Modeling, instead its Synth ASDR controls ( page 31)

While the INST Block set to "E.GUITAR, ACOUSTIC, AC BASS, E.BASS" does have a "AMP Modeling" Guitar / Bass Amp Modeling inside the INST Block

Ive been told its because the SY-1000 employs Roland latest new lower latency  8 Input / 8 Output USB Audio  / MIDI USB stack

See page 20

QuoteUSB COMPUTER port: USB B type (supports High-Speed USB, USB Audio, and USB MIDI)

Quote from: tjontheroad, post: 29873221, member: 156823Well, I'm interested in how they made those patches. I gotta admit, there is a lot of cheesiness in those synth sounds. Very retro "back to future" like tones. Very basic sounding. I hope I can mangle some more modern moving textures out of the synths.

the Roland VG-99 shares some resources with SY-1000  - and at VGuitarforums we have a 12 year repository of VG-99 User created patches, many with MP3 examples.
Since the VG-99 Editor runs in an "Offline mode" and can load / import  any VG-99 User patch for review
One could employ a concept I call  "Patch Cloning" and run both editors side by side and duplicate many VG-99 patches in Boss Tone Studio for SY-1000

Quote from: slooky, post: 29944353, member: 160240Why would they not include the Tera Echo in effects. Its such a nice sounding effect. I did see a warp delay that produces a dream like sound. hmm interesting
It was explained to me during the NAMM SY-1000 Round table that each effect has a specific quality I'll call "DSP Memory Load"  - they had to balance the new SY-1000 Synth features they wanted to maintain, while demoting of few effects which require a higher, "DSP Memory Load".

They never want SY-1000 to experience the  dreaded "DSP Out of Memory" error while building a patch , often seen on older Line-6 gear

the Normal Signal path features GT-1000 class Amp  / Cab modeling and 32 bit effects   - but a simple review of the Parameter Guides and Reference Manuals for each device reveals SY-1000 does NOT include every GT-1000 FX or feature.

Each of us has specific ears and minimum requirements for our needs, for many the SY-1000 may be the All in one, to cover all your needs.
While for others , SY-1000 is simply handling the Synth and Alt Tuned Guitar duties, while their Kemper / Axe-FX handles their main guitar tones.

Hypocritical question,
did that meeting with Yoshi and the team reveal any plans to offer IR loading in the SY? Not a dealbreaker; just curious.

Our SY-1000 Round table team at NAMM hammered them on adding this  and reminded them that on $1K Guitar MFX box CAB IR Loading is an expected feature.

They have only 15% available space in the DSP which is already very busy with other tasks  - I would not hold my breath for  CAB IR loading to  occur as FW update on SY-1000

The good news  - the SY-1000 employs same AIRD Cab sims as GT-1000 and are already very good - and the flexible rerouting of the SY-1000 signal chain is the most intense ever offered from Roland/Boss  -
For basic guitar tones at a live gig , I prefer SY-1000 over my GT-1000 = its much easier to navigate and program and tweak, and you can route the normal electric guitar signal path to the 1/4" Sub Outs only - then feed a separate third party Cab IR Box if desired.

SY-1000 paired with a GR-33 with a US-20 A/B/Y GK 13 pin Switcher is an excellent combo  - I much prefer the GR-33 PCM Sound set vs the GR-55 PCM sounds, and there are better real time Synth controls on GR-33, and less likely to accidentally hit the GR-55 Looper or wave player footswitch combos

If you have only experienced GR-55 PCM and desire something new , try the GR-33 which IMHO has MUCH better Pianos and Saxophones

and there is a MIDI Quest GR-33 Editor
