OK here goes...
Anyone have any hints for getting a good Money For Nothing tone?
Or a nice SRV Little Wing patch?

Can anyone get a good Howard Roberts tone out of the 99?

You know, it might be a good idea to make this thread a sticky, and to ask people to post any patches done by requests from this thread, in a separate thread. I am not sure if that is clearly stated. In other words, I just requested a Howard Roberts patch. If someone makes such a patch, they would then post their "reply" not in this thread in a new thread in the VG-99 Patches subforum. So this thread will contain ONLY patch requests. And a mod could mark each "answered" patch request as being answered.

I wish to create a patch to recreate Lenny Kravitz's "Are you gonna go my way". I need some help with this. Am at the point where I am about 40% comfortable with my '99. When I finally sold my '88 I feel as though I was at about 90% (never really used the midi side of things, couldn't really see the point if all I could ultimately do with it was change patch parameters).
The plan is this:
* I intend to use a few adjacent patches for different parts of the song. Basically using each pedal as a stomp box. (it is here that I miss the Zoom 8080's reverb/delay overlap function...no cut notes, no jarring transitions). The reason for this is that I also want to recreate the stereo placing of the guitar. (another gripe....stereo amp models could achieve this effect much better, but anyway)
* Amp and distortion pedal....which ones?
* EQ damping for verses to avoid clouding the vocal (perhaps I could assign a pedal)
*Octave pedal for low guitar harmony....real guitar on Right, octave guitar on Left
* Cleanish amp with mono phaser for middle section
* A toggle switch which goes from on to off, (or an approximation of this since the cosm toggle switch does not work in two independent halves like a real Gibson.)
*Perhaps a wah for the solo
Will post what I have got so far when I figure out how to exchange individual patches....

Kravitz is in the "Helden" patch elsewhere on the forums. It doesn't give you the whole song but it's a starting point.

Has anyone come up with some good Metheny patches yet? I know there's one in the "heroes" library, but it's not quite there yet, at least to my ears. The sound I'm referring to is on "End of the Game," "Are you Going with Me" and countless other tunes. Metheny somehow has this super fluid sound, and a brilliance in the tone without a lot of treble. I've been trying to get the EQ right, but each time, after a few hours, my ears burn out. Just wondering if anyone has nailed it yet. In the meantime, I'll see if I can get any closer.

Yeah I know what you mean about ear-burnout.
Perhaps what we should do in this case, since we now have UNLIMITED space to store our patches is create four or five variations, which all come pretty close and sound similar to each other. Then next time we come back to it, with fresh ears we can work out which one came closest and then continue to chip away.
Some of these sounds could take weeks or months to nail....

Not a bad idea. I agree, some patches take a long time to tweak to perfection. Which is also a compliment to the VG, having such a vast array of tools and colors to work with. I try to stay focused when I'm editing patches, but it doesn't always work out that way. I change something and it starts going in a completely different direction than originally intended. My focus is no match against my curiosity.

Has anyone got a good patch to reproduce David Gilmore's quiet solo work in the opening cut of Wish You Were Here?
I've always been fascinated with that combined crystalline/distorted tone

Shine on you crazy diamond?
This could be an epic thread....
First of all you might want to find a patch called Floydish. Hit an open G, then freeze it.
Groove around in G minor for a bit on the other channel. Do this for a few minutes....
Then find yourself a nice clean strat through a Mesa Boogie.....
Then grab a nice slow Phaser, increase your distortion...
{Will try and post some patches and audio samples}
To be continued....
U2
1. Streets
2. Beautiful Day (That synthy sound in the middle on his guitar too)
3. Vertigo
4. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
5. Mysterious Ways
6. New Years Day
But especially The Edge's LIVE sound.
Perhaps we can cop his sounds when the U2 3D movie goes to DVD. ;D
Anyone help with sound Tom Waits uses on stuff like Heart Attack and Vine?
TIA
How about the wah solo from Dixie Dreg's "What If" ? I have no idea how to get that sharp wah and which of the 5 pickups Steve Morse is using.
Could somebody assist me with creating a VAN HALEN - CATHEDRAL patch...and/or a volume swell with delay. I'm trying to convert my patches from my current rig to this for live playing and I'm running into some glitches. You help is greatly appreciated.

I want to find Jason Becker's sound. I also want some Steve Vai or Joe Satriani's sounds. If you have anything, post it

Hi All. good day everyone. Just a request if anyone has come up with.... Tuck Andress ( 1953 Gibson L-5 CES or 1949 Gibson L-5 CES) sound? Just curious..... If you have one.... pls.post. Thank you!
OK, guilty pleasure time. Just heard a flash-back clip of the solo from Hair-Band Archetypes White Lion's "classic" song Wait. I want that no-attack, no grit, ultra-smooth 80s sound! Is it in the 99? Can it be done? Prove it to me!
Listen to it here:

It's not that I'm still into that sort of music, or even that sound so much (altho I do recall buying the tab for this solo back in the day...:)). But I do think it could be a cool starting point for a lot of sounds I would enjoy. But I'm basically wondering WHERE amongst all the amps and overdrives on the 99 would one even start looking for such a sound: NOT crunchy, not gritty, not metallic, not particularly dynamic (OK, it's obviously compressed...), not breaking up, not grainy, not bright, but not muted either... Surely this was once a bread'n'butter sound, no? Where would YOU start?
Thanks for any tips!!

Anyone able to reproduce Andy Latimer (Camel) sound?
Anyone have an idea on getting some of the ray-gun effects by Stevie Stevens, such as in Rebel Yell & other songs?
I'm not sure where to start on this patch. Thanks
Camel would be nice - I'm surprised there isn't a Hendrix? com'on! Hendix!?!?
My reasonf or posting in here is to request A bi-monthly - or even yearly ZIP of ALL patches. Downloading each little mid is okay if looking for one thing. but would be nice to do one ZIP - unpack them in a dir and just load and test each.
Why all the tedious little msgs, and downloads? (to coinside with the editior/librarian tedium?) ;D

Big huge thanks for responding so quickly and sharing once again!!! The demo sounds great and I can't wait to get home and try your patch with my VG guitars as well as try "mags only" with a guitar that I have that has a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge (Jerry's former favorite pickups- apparently he favors Motor City's now).
Ya I noticed he mentioned the motors in the video. One thing I should have mentioned is I think the regular guitar mix is set to 0, so you'll have to crank the volume up for them in the COSM guitar section if you're mixing your Mags with the GK. BTW I just tried it with the reg mags on my Ibanez RG420CM INF2 pickups and I like the patches better with these than the variable COSM electric !
Andrew.

Welcome to the group nightmarevs! :)
Have you tried any of the 12 string patches posted here? https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?board=32.0 (https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?board=32.0)
Loading some of these patches will also let you see how they are created. Experiment with the guitar models after you have one loaded into you VG and you can come up with some pretty interesting variations.
Also setting up a twelve string is pretty easy, just get a guitar sound you like and go into ALTERNATE TUNING and turn on the 12 string. Let us know if you run into problems and we can help out.
Thank you,
i tried all of them and now i've created a new one but it's not what i wanted. Do you have any tips how i can enhance this patch that it sounds like the guitar in the video?

See if this is any better.
Yes i'ts better but i don't have any idear how to optimize it. I like this sound because of it's brilliance and attack and both is missing in my patch. I tried a custom guitar because i know the original has a piezo bridge and an emg active single coil but it looks like this was the false way

Look at the COSM GUITAR EQ and the FX EQ. That is about all I did except for changing the model from CUSTOM to LP. Also some adjustments in the AMP section and a little tweaking in the 12 String area. Experiment and you will find out what does what.
You could also add an acoustic on Channel B to get more piezo sound if you think it needs it. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Hey deathstroke,
Being new the VG here are some tips for patch creation:
1. start with initializing a patch.
2. select a guitar model.
3. select a amp model.
4. I then create the room in the mixer Delay/Reverb section Try to stay away from the delay when creating a room and set the reverb time kinda low and the mix high (control the level in the mixer).
5. now apply some EQ this is the most important part of patch editing and the VG has EQ options all over the place. I find that boosting the 2k in the low mid realy brings some of the amps to life.
6. then add some effects (less is more) and when recreating an artists sound and tailoring you tone the FX chain is very important too.
There are some grate patches on this site to get you started but I recommend using your own work....it's so much more satisfying.
Jimmy.
I thought there were some acoustic dobro patches out there somewhere but I'm not finding one. anyone have a good one? Thanks.
guitarjano and Brent Flash have posted patches (attached). There may be others in acoustic, altered tuning, or country. Download the "all patches" file, and try all the ones in those categories - they may not have dobro or resonator in the name. I added that to the end of guitarjano's patch name when I originally downloaded it, or I wouldn't have been able to find it.
Thanks!
Hi there. I am looking for some patches to get me into the ballpark of Scott Henderson's early Tribal Tech sounds please. I've been trying for some time now, but getting nowhere fast. I was trying to use one channel for lead and the other for clean with chorus etc. The difficult part is the tone - sometimes he sounds like AH, and others like the best Blues guitar sound imaginable, but always a very special tone. Nowadays he sounds to me as though he is trying to emulate Jeff Beck's playing style and sound - no bad thing, but to me light years away from the tone he had in Tribal Tech/Elektric Band/Zawinul Syndicate in the '80s.
I would also be interested in the Frank Gambale version of this sound - strange that no-one so far has submitted any of these type of sounds - very little of AH either!
Thanks in advance..... :)
For a meat and potatoes Henderson tone try my "NotSantana" patch. It is basically a replica of my Mesa Studio preamp which is what Henderson used in the TT early days. It's attached here in this message.
His blues sound came later which was a totally different setup and I'll have to work on putting that together som eother time
My fusion clean tone which could pass for the Henderson fusion clean tone is the "Landau Clean" which is similar to the Mike Landau tune "I'm Buzzed" rhythm guitar tone.
anyone up for tweaking the most "outrageous flippant but still playable sound " that the VG99 can handle
pref. with a soundfile

Wow, sounds like circuits frying! What tweaking are you looking for?
I should say thank you !!
well the more the merrier
I read about Reeves Gabrels burning amp vg8 simulation
on Earthling , he tried to make a patch that sounded like an
amp on fire whilst being played and ended up using that patch a lot.
the crazier the better. ;)
also that he used to play the VG8 in edit mode ,
since you could tweak since you where not able to in play mode
so the more realtime tweakability the better.
Quotehe tried to make a patch that sounded like an amp on fire whilst being played
LOL that is exactly how I used to describe my old Boogie Mark IIc+. :) That amp was possessed.
At the time in 1996 when Bowie's Earthling CD arrived with Reeves Gabrels performing bulk of the music with the Roland VG-8 on every track, I thought this was the future,
And tube amps would be dead in a couple years
and just maybe the young generation of guitarists would cease being stuck trying to master every SRV lick (bulk are actually Albert Kings licks from '64).
I was wrong.
The worst part is the guys who DRESS like SRV with their initials on the pickguard. It's not enough to play his licks, they want to look like him too. Oh well.
Mark IIc+ Love that amp - the preamp section of my Studio Preamp supposedly is the same circuit design.
I've actually got a bunch of new patches to submit but was working on one that was kind of like an electric wall of sound.
QuoteThe worst part is the guys who DRESS like SRV with their initials on the pickguard.
I used to feel self-conscious playing Jems and Universes because they are
so Vai-branded, but hey I loved the guitars. But someone else's initials in a massive font definitely crosses some kind of line. :) (Actually, I can't even see putting my own initials on my pickguard.)
QuoteMark IIc+ Love that amp - the preamp section of my Studio Preamp supposedly is the same circuit design.
For me it's the proverbial big one that got away. Loved it to bits, but I was too young and stupid to realize what a mistake selling it would be... and so I did... for a song. :'(

not about Albert !! :)
my whole idea with asking about patches of the odder kind, is just what you're talking about, regarding\SRV and such.
my approach to vg guitar is to try make sounds that aren't possible or easy to make in the real world, the fact that you can also make an SRV patch is a bonus but not more.

It's called GR-300-MIDI-CONTROL.MID and then start from there - up the gain, turn on the duet, compression and then go crazy. Work with the pitch ranges too such as octave +1 and see if you can't sound like it. I think it will work.

Yeah. Use a fuzz face model with some compression in front of a semi-clean Marshall model and you can get in that neighborhood. Maybe use a little delay or reverb for some ambience. I might have a patch similar to that.

Thank you for your response! :) I am going to try what you say.. but are you sure about the fuzz face? Because I don't hear any fuzz at all in Carl's sound! It is extra-smooth! If you have a patch similar to that, I would be grateful if you could upload it. I would then try to tweak it and make it as similar as possible to the sound I am after! :)

It's the Eric Johnson trick - the semi-distorted Marshall smooths out the fuzz so it doesn't sound like Fuzz. That's why EJ gets the tone he does (today) - it's a fuzz face in front of a Marshall.
As an aside, James Santiago of Voodoo Lab did a thing where he ran an Eric Johnson fuzz face thru the Voodoo Lab Giggity pedal into a Marshall and got an amazing EJ Ah Via Musicom tone - basically mimicking the sound of Eric using a fuzz face in front of a Dumble amp which was a signal chain EJ was using back in the 1980s.
Eric Johnson Fuzz Face - Giggity Dumble Setting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhRFooLueeE#ws)
Which is totally UNLIKE Eric's tone today - his is more normal fuzz face smoothing into a Marshall for a more singing liquid lead type tone with much less overt delay. Only in certain instances do you hear the overt fuzz of it but this is a pretty good example of how tones on record can be aped by mimicking signal chains and certain playing techniques. I own one of those giggity pedals and it's pretty slick.

and the best metheny GR sound so far is in the VG8ex
i feel that i'm actually closer to that sound on VG88

Bill Ruppert found out if you crank the GK levels really high the GR300 model in the VG-99 "wakes up!"
His demo still blows my mind, sounds like Eddie Jobson.

if you mean the UK mp3 one yes
but it sounds to me more like
the solo sound of Frisell around 4.30
in this song Bass Desires - Samurai Hee Haw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJV0IuwNi_4#)
and the Metheny sound is much more smother and rounder.
I'm wondering if it's the GR-300 or not
It's a GR300. I've seen Metheny in concert and the blue GR-300 is a mainstay.

Very nice! I think you are 95% there! I would EQ the sound with a bit less low-mid and more mid/hi-mid frequencies. Can you upload your patch please? What kind of GK sensitivity settings do you use?
Cheers! :)
Hey
I'll work on it and upload it some time after this coming weekend
i'm on the road without the 99 only the 88 makes the trip
and about the GK the same as usual i tried high setting 100 and i have rather high
in any case but id didn't make it sound any better.
I had a go and created two different GR300 patches.. they are OK.. but still not there ::)

Hi amagalma, just so you will know short mp3 demos can be posted right here on the site with your post, just add "Attachment" at the bottom. This will make it more convinient for the members wanting to hear them. It would also be nice to add information about what you are posting, like in this case it seems like you are posting patches but you are actually posting demos of the patches. Thanks!

that i've ever heard it'll be under vrec

if anyone has heard another one , please let me know !
Yes, the sound was very nice! Thank you! :) I just made it a bit brighter sounding (with EQ and GR-300 filter cut-off).
I'd love to hear your fretless GR-300 song!!! Couldn't find it under vrec...
...
Coming back to "artist/song patch requests", could the sound of ?smail Tunçbilek's electric ba?lama be recreated with the VG99?
I really love his sound! (and his playing ofcourse!!!)

Good , I like the sounds to be more dark but it might also
have to do with the guitar and hex pickup and
the fretless GR is coming soonish just waiting for a bass track
and the sound you're asking about should be easy to recreate
I'll give it spin when i have the time, it'd be easier to play
on a fretless though ;D
a guess would be a mix with acoustic guitar or banjo maybe metal dobro
and a sitar with low buzz
getting closer :)

I do not think it is so easy to recreate as it might seem at first! At least, it is not easy for me! ::) I do not hear any acoustic guitar/banjo/metal dobro quality in his elektro baglama sound. If it was a traditional baglama, then yes... Furthermore, one must make a clever use of a compressor I think, in order to achieve similar reaction from the strings. Listen to the video from 3:24 to 3:41 where he plays glissandi in the indian style. That is a 17 seconds phrase with just a single strike from the right hand!

getting closer :)
I tried to recreate it with a "variable" electric guitar with humbuckers and 12-strings alternate tuning but I am not there.. I am curious to listen what you can come up with!
P.S. The baglama has 7 strings in 3 courses, tuned: A2-A3, E3-E3, B2-B3-B3
I'll see what I can come up with before this weekend.
Glissandi indian style is hard on a fretted guitar
unfretted is a different story.
I own and use a sitar , an afhan dutar and a dranyen
apart from 10 or so fretless guitars , so i think that part of the sound you're
after might be the hands or the technique so to speak
but I'll give it a shot :)

Of course "the hands" and technique is the most important artistic aspect, once you have the right gear! A Greek proverb says "the good craftsman is made by the tools" (I am literal translating. I hope it makes sense!)
Very cool that you play the dutar (it's the Afghan/Persian equivalent of the baglama) and dranyen! :) My favourite instrument of this type is the Afghan rebab (or the sarod, its indian equivalent).
Glissandi Indian style are of course more difficult on the fretted guitar than on a fretless, but still not impossible! Check this guy out:

That should be pretty easy:
He basically uses Gibsons with P90s and Fender Strats plus some assorted other Gibsons with humbuckers.
So try emulating a Marshall plexi super lead or JCM800 and use a Cry Baby Wah Wah and I know he uses a Boss Blues Driver for solos.

Hello everyone!
I'm searching a good patch for the solo in Like Show Me How To Live, by Audioslave. I know that, there is a step phaser involved, but I'm unable to combine the result in a good way. I'd be honored to have your help once again.
Thank you :)
