I guess (and hope) that this should be a new topic for discussion.
I have gone through a few speakers, in a few different cabinet configurations and I think that speakers can make or break even the best amp. The speaker selection, the wiring, the cab design (including the combination of woods and grill cloth) makes a difference to my ear. Here is a pretty good resource for some basic comparisons on YouTube (although the cab configuration limits the speaker's true potential):

I am not a pro at this by any means, but I have spent a considerable amount of time and money on searching for the right amp/speaker combination.

Heres a good resource that i have used:
http://www.webervst.com/sptalk.html

i'm presently using the following, in a variety of configurations and with different amps:
Celestion 12" Gold
Celestion Vintage 30
Celestion G12H Greenbacks
ELM 12L

I would love to try the M55 by Scumback (http://www.scumbackspeakers.com), which are all the rave at the moment among Rockers here in California. I also like what I'm hearing from the 412 produced by Splawn (http://www.splawnguitars.com/cabs.htm), with it's version of the G12Ms that they call Small Blocks (actually made by Eminence).

Anyone have any particular preference for a given style of music and amp combination?

My all time favorite is the EVM12L in a Thiele cab. Swiss Army knife of speakers for me...

Have a couple sitting two feet from my chair...

I have a about six EVM12L speakers in various cabs and amps

its a good clean full bodied speaker - but for most guitar tones I prefer my 1981 Celestion G12-80

the current 2011 versions do not sound the same

The EVM's, at 19 pounds a speaker, are pretty hefty.  That's 114 pounds for 6 speakers, a work out moving those around i'm sure! I really like these Celestion 12H Heritages, not fond of the Vintage 30s though.

Same here. For some reason I never managed to make them work for me. Yet.

Quotenot fond of the Vintage 30s though.

I agree - Vintage 30's are a Totally muddy speaker - Id like to meet the guy who dreamed that design up and educate him, - must be a gen-x'er who did not actually live in the 1960's!

The best Celestion 30 watt speaker was the authentic Gold painted Vox Bulldog 12" from any 1960's Vox amp.

Night and Day difference!

Have you ever tried Scumbacks? Apparently the owner of this company collected over 400 pre-rola Celestions, sonically analyzed them and then worked with some OEM manufacturer to voice specific to that zone... Sounds good on paper and he seems to be selling well but never had a chance to hear one up close. Thoughts?

Never heard of them

I do like the re-issue (made in italy) Jensen C12N 12" ,

and C10Q 10" in my old fenders.

But Id use and recommend  either  of these in a British voiced amp any day too.

I have heard of Scumbacks, although have not play though them yet. I will make a trip to LA soon to check them out and report back. Impressive the research and effort he put into these though.
