Apogee has announced the release of JAM, a studio quality guitar input for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Mac. According to the company, the plug-and-play device features PureDIGITAL technology and enables musicians to "practice, record and rock out" using the guitar amps and effects in Apple's GarageBand software for the iPad and Mac OS X. Jam from Apogee will be going on sale later this month for $99.

I hope they make this stuff for the Blackberry Playbook - because I think I will go that way.

I love the idea of such a small device to practice with.

Where do I plug in my PA? :)

How can you NOT get this product?  8)

Just read about the GarageBand for iPad announced at $4.99 or something like that. Amazing. Should be good.

For myself, I have determined a "pass" on iPad 2 (reasons not mentioned anywhere). But, I DO have a 13" MBA with Garage Band and an Apogee GIO, as well as an iPhone 4. This JAM deal is a 'no brainer', right?

Apple has a policy of upgrading firmware, and leaving third party hardware vendors that use the 30 pin dock connector rendered "incompatible".

Case in point: Look at the Sonoma Guitar Jack - 2 years in development, then rendered obsolete with the newer IOS 4 devices.
http://www.sonomawireworks.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=262&zenid=el6imsferriihc0f3luc5frh97

Or the hit of the 2010 MacWorld expo - the BlueMikey II
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Mikey2/

Delayed 9 months, because Blue needed to incorporate an Apple ID chip in the 30 pin interface, then when it hit the Market in August 2011, - IOS4 made it "dead".

I'm sure Apogee must know what they are doing here - but this might have a shelf life of 8 months before being rendered "dead" when IOS 5 hits, due to the need to connect to the 30pin interface.

Its a gamble!

The IK Media IRig is basically the same thing as this and works will all iPhones, IPad Touchs,  and ipads, and is 1/3rd the cost, and will work now and in the future since it uses the headphone jack.

Apple has  a new policy for IOS 4.2 devices about the electrical current draw of anything connected to the 30 pin dock connector.
I recently was involved in the co-design of an IPad Audio Interface, and at the very last minute we had to change the design and include an on board battery, to get past this hurdle.

As with all gear, its best to wait for a review prior to plunking down the cash.

Rather wish i had done this with my Dark Fire ;)

WISE advice, Elantric!  We should all be finding out as much as we can about what applications and versions of hardware are going to be supported by these pieces of add-on device.  This is especially true for the iOS/Apple products since one company (Apple) can decide if a device is going to continue to be supported or will not.

Apple. The largest tech company In the world (even over Microsoft and Google). The Frick'en "evil empire".

You are correct and I, myself, have a long legacy with this uber-controlling genius...

Love/hate relationship for me. But, 'what are you gonna do'? You simply can NOT "fight City Hall", right?

I've seen all you describe. And still, as of today, IMO, that sucker is THE MAN! Even with his ailments (and I do have empathy, being his same age). I ABSOLUTELY HATE his controlling and 'pirate' nature. ABSOLUTELY! However, I am also (NOT bragging) at genius level, and artistic.  I TOTALLY GET the man! And, as far as I'm concerned, he can do (and, IMO, IS CORRECT in doing) WHATEVER he thinks best-- even if I disagree. That guy is an ef'en Alexander (as in 'the Great').

Hey you cant sweat these things.

I was born in 1955 too, and always found it interesting i'm the same age as both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.

In 1967 I was living in Cupertino and played on the Soccer team with my Junior High School.  (Kennedy Jr HS Cupertino,CA )

Its quite possible I played on the same soccer field as a 12 year old Steve Jobs on the opposing team at one time in my life.

In July 1996 I was scheduled to fly from LA to NY then NY to Paris on Flight 800,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TWA_Flight_800

but I was delayed in freeway traffic in Los Angeles making connections - so i flew from Boston to Paris instead. ( and I dont get as angry when delayed in traffic jam anymore.)

My point, None of us knows what the future holds, and today's winners and losers may be trading places in the next 10 years.

Great points about the product in question, past & future and Mr. Jobs... Can't disagree with any!

I do have the iRig and i'm quite happy with it actually. Levels are a little low with it but for my purposes of playing while traveling it is more than enough.

I have to agree with all of you about the iRig; I just received mine about 5 days ago - it works, the price is right, and it's fun! And what could be cooler when used in tight spaces (such as on a boat with a Hohner/Steinberger headless compact guitar - mine modified with Fender Lace PUs?). Imagine: iPad (with Amplitube), iRig, Steinberger, headphones, ocean...life can be very good! :) ;) ;D

To put the icing on the cake: with a 3G connection I can still get my FutureGuitarNow fix whenever desired!!!

The only thing I have in this thread title....is a Mac & a very happy Apple iMac user at that.  :D

I've always wondered thou & thought where on earth would you use iPad's , iPhone, iPod touch in the making & recording of music.
Seems that quite a few here seem to use these.
The main problem I have with these is they get (superseded) real quickly. Sure my iMac is probably that to.
All I got is a iMac & Logic etc etc etc & do all recording & playing on this at home.....I just didn't see where these other (i) things would fit in.

Gee & I thought you guys were using these at home as a studio setup of sorts.  ;)

NOW Thanks to photonutalan1 & MCK  I see where these are used & fully understand now, why some have these.
In a boat or on a plane, hotel rooms, down the back of the yard, at the pub, on top of the Himalayan mountains......Well anywhere.

See I'm either at work (can't really use any of these in my work area) or at home 24/7 & 365 days a year....Last went on Holidays 10+ years ago.
So I wouldn't have much use out of those other things, as yet anyway......

Lets see, Im on my 2nd mobile phone in 16 years.
Next phone I buy will be a iPhone, But by then it might be a different version of phone called the......iYoubeautincredabledoseeverything G8  ;D ;D

Gee wiz... I told ya, I learn stuff here......Cheers  ;D
Q... What kind of advice can you give me ?   Tommy Emmanuel's reply ....

You move your hand Up and Down that long bit and the music comes out of that Big Black Box behind you !!

Wow MCK! I'd never heard of the Escape EG-1 Guitar! What a super cool tool! I envy you too; with all of your travels, what a great time you must have with that guitar (and iPad rig)! I love the fact that the guitar is also totally independent (with its onboard amp.) Thanks for bringing it to my/our attention!

Thank you for all that you give to us, my friend; you are highly valued!

MCK-fgn

Thanks for your kind words as always! Believe me when I say this I'd much rather stay home with my family. Business travel is no fun after so many years. In anycase, having some usual luxury items on the road does help!

The guitar linked here comes in few different formats. Its made in China I believe but for all intent and purposes does a decent job. Slightly larger than a violin case when packed away in its case its a great fit in all airliner overhead space. The amp onboard is a simple headphone amp so yes you can plug away and play. There is even a distorted tone which gets old very quickly but good fun anyways.

Sorry to see that I'm once again getting you to spend money my friend. I have been good for a long time though so it was about time I suppose. This one will not cost much anyways. Keep well.

I carry one of these
http://www.travelerguitar.com/products/pro-series/

Has headphones that work without need for power.

The Pro-Series is Traveler Guitar's first instrument and remains a standard of innovation and design for travel guitars. Featuring a custom piezo pickup and a single-coil electric pickup, its 24 ¾" scale neck-through body sounds great through acoustic and electric amplifiers, or through its unique internal resonant pickup system with the included stethophone headset, which allows for private listening without batteries or an amp.

. . . the future ain't what it used to be . . .

photonutalan1-fgn

No auxiliary power?...How cool is that?!!! Thanks, Elantric, for your further enlightenment! ;D That's a very neat instrument!

MCK-fgn

"included stethophone headset"

Hold the guitar high up on your chest and you will have the drum machine kick in free of charge. Might take a while to master controlling the beat until it does not shift though!  ;D

I've used my Traveler Ultra-Light for quite a long time now. (Lately I've thought about getting it's newer 'twin'--the one with nylon strings). But, I've also been using Amplitude for about 6 months on my iPhone. I've really enjoyed these products. Well, I do travel extensively. I just can't take a regular guitar due to the temperature extremes it would have to (not) endure. Let alone the bumps, scrapes, and possible drops!

I think, well, it's my strong impression that there's been an Apogee-Apple bond, in particular... Just an impression. Also, $99 for a potential year or two seems a 'reasonable subscription' (to me, everything is a subscription). I bet one day we'll be subscribing the right to play a guitar (ooops, that's like my DF, huh)?

Hehe.  ;)

Oh, war stories, my flirt with flight disaster back in the day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Airlines_Flight_191

Sure hope ya both bought a lottery ticket that day, Or....a new guitar  ;)  ;D

That's not an impression, it's a fact: Apogee is the official partner of Apple in developing audio hardware.
