Title: yamaha g50 as monophonic guitar to midi converter
Post by: threaders on March 07, 2022, 02:08:29 AM
Hi
Just wondering if anyone has any idea on how the yamaha g50 works as a monophonic guitar to midi converter. IE plugging your guitar straight in using jack and then connecting to a synth. Any better than the sonuus g2m v3 ?

That's a good thought. It is an older unit so maybe won't track so well, but it does have internal sounds, I think!

It makes you wonder, would it have killed Roland to include this in the GR-55?

Roland included that feature in their Boss DR5 to trigger internal GM sound palette. No reported injuries. ;D

I made a D.I.Y GK to normal input device which does just that, using a regular (but monophonic) input to use the GR-55 internal amp/effects,
and also with a 6 pole DIP switch,
select which of the GK input lines you want to use the PCM synths with (and presumably guitar to midi).

The VG-99 does pitch to MIDI, but only from the 13-pin input. I think the only Roland devices that have 1/4" P2M are the GT-100 and the GT-001.

Hi thanks for the comments much appreciated. Now I dont know weather to go for the yamaha g50 or the vg99. I can find a g50 for £200 and a vg99 for £300 do you think they will be better than the g2m. I had a g2m v3 and it was ok. Some people have said it tracks better with the tone all the way off but my archtop doesnt have a tone and seems to work best with the volume all the way up.
Any help would be much appreciated many thanks

As per my above comment, I'm pretty sure the VG-99 doesn't do pitch-to-MIDI unless you're using a 13-pin input. If you want monophonic P2M from a standard 1/4" input, then it's either the Sonuus unit, the G50, or the GT-100 / GT-001.

£300 for a VG-99 is a very good deal, by the way.

Test case : Fender Player with no GK pickup - VG99 - MIDI OUT to JV1010 MIDI IN Trumpet Patch (47) Session Bank.
I took a lousy video for you. Sorry I am not pro you tuber so no gizmos at home... playing and video making...
Enjoy!  :)

Hi
Many thanks for your comments its much appreciated. I think im going to give the sonuus g2m 3 another try first as its the cheaper option. I spoke to the ceo of sonuus and he really thinks its one of the fastest tracking units out there.
He said that when you pluck the string, the green midi light lights up and how fast it lights up after you pluck the string is the latency. He said if there is any further latency then its likley to be a synth issue.
I remember the green light lit up straight away so I now have a novation peak module so im hoping it will work better with that. Maybe im better with a different module that is designed to give sounds for midi rather than a synth itself.
Ive been offered a yamaha g50 but im not sure as it is 90s tech so without hearing one being used as a mono synth im not sure it will be better than the sonuus g2m 3 but ill let you know how I get on and thatnks for everyones help :)

I STAND CORRECTED!!

Paolo, that's one hell of a find. I checked it myself and can 100% confirm that this is a very-undocumented feature.

Interestingly (and annoyingly) it's not a feature on the VB-99. I'm guessing that the P2M doesn't work as well for the lower frequencies. I did test a bass through the VG-99 and it tracks down to D on the A string, but glitches after that.

Thanks for sharing this and my apologies for doubting you  :D

I have a VG99 which I haven't used for a long time, because I don't like the GK13 Pickups so much, but this is amazing. You can use the normal Guitar Input to get monophonic MIDI Sounds?! Only from an external MIDI Sound Expander or also from the internal VG99 Sounds?
According to the VG99 Quick Guide this is NOT possible:
"If you like the sound of your normal pickups as is—or you
don't want to install a divided pickup—you can still use
your guitar with the VG-99. Just plug its output into the
VG-99's rear-panel 1/4-inch GUITAR INPUT jack. You won't
be able to use COSM instrument modeling (including its alternate tunings and polyphonic effects) or the Guitar to MIDI function; those require a divided pickup. But you can use all the rest of the VG-99's processing options, including COSM amps and effects."
