Hi, newb to the site. I would post in the GR50 section but I doubt anyone reads it lol.

I have a GR50 that I have had since like 1993. I don't care for most of the sounds and at some point in the early 90s I started looking for external modules to work with it. I originally started just plugging into keyboards and quickly learned about mono mode and needing 6 channels at once.

I ended up getting a Sound Canvas SD35 back then. It had better (to me) sounds than the D110 based GR50 and it also had a lot of other useful features (sequencer, midi dumps, disk drive, etc). I used that live and studio driven by my GR50. The SD35 died about 20 years ago and I went down a rabbit hole with a V-synth XT, which would support mono mode and had some incredible sounds. I cannot remember what the limitations were with that (I think the XY pad had only one channel, so I couldn't transmogrify guitar synth sounds the way I wanted) and it required a PHD in engineering to operate. Sold that and kind of wish I hadn't.

I am again looking to get back into guitar synth and was looking to see what the "new" guitar synth offerings are, and I am NOT impressed.

I almost bought a SY-1000 but I don't need another amp modeler or effects rack, got plenty of that already. I also watched some reviews and stuff on youtube and the sounds aren't that good, the editor is complete garbage and there's so many limitations all around that I consider it a toy and have been looking again for module.

What I really want is a groove box drum machine/sequencer type machine with a good multi timbral sound module included that supports MONO enough channels to use it as guitar synth sound module.

I was really excited about Roland JD-XI or GAIA but these don't support mono (at least not as much as I can tell).

Do I need to just go buy an old Sound Canvas or is there some reasonable solution for me? I would like to get sounds where I can tweak the filters and LFO and things like that and be able to do expressions. I used some sysex on my old sound canvas where I could run my expression controller pedal and assign it to envelope or other params on all the guitar channels and then mangle my sounds in real time.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Take a sniff at the new Boss GM-800 guitar synth, uses the latest Roland Zen Core system (unloadable wave synth expansion packs).

Some of the older stuff is OK, like the Roland Fantom Xr rack synth, or Roland Sonic Cell.
