Let the new gear speculation begin.

Would love to see Roland/Boss do something/anything in the guitar modeling or synth arena. What they've done for electronic drums is flat out amazing, and I expect their next flagship offering for that lineup to be pretty spectacular given they've moved into the digital realm for triggering.

At 2018 Winter NAMM - the MPE (Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression) MIDI standard will be formally recognized
https://www.namm.org/nammu/introduction-midi-polyphonic-expression-mpe

QuoteWhat is MPE?
MPE stands for "Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression" and is a new MIDI standard created by us, ROLI, Apple, Moog, Haken Audio, Bitwig and others for communicating over MIDI between MPE controllers (like LinnStrument, Roli Seaboard, Continuum, SoundPlane or Eigenharp) and MPE sound generators (like these).
The principal reason for MPE is to get around a limitation of MIDI: Pitch Bend and Control Change messages must apply to all notes on the channel. This prevents polyphonic pitch bends and polyphonic Y-axis control (which uses Control Change messages) over a single MIDI channel. MPE solves this problem by sending each note's messages on a separate MIDI channel, rotating through a defined block of channels. Here's a brief summary of MPE:
Each note's messages are sent on a unique MIDI channel, rotating through a defined contiguous block of channels called Per-Note channels. The per-note messages are limited to Note On, Note Off, Channel Pressure (for finger pressure), Pitch Bend (for X-axis movement) and CC74 (for Y-axis movement).  All other messages (like Program Change, CC7/volume, CC64/Sustain, etc.) apply to all voices and are sent over a separate "Common" channel, though some MPE synths do not implement a Common channel, instead receiving these Common messages redundantly over the Per-Note channels.
In LinnStrument, MPE is called "Channel Per Note" mode, and the Common channel is called the "Main" channel.

John Petrucci and Ernie Ball Music have created the highly exclusive NOMAC guitar, studded with diamonds, white gold and all sorts of other precious materials. They were inspired by the Dream Theater Album The Astonishing from the year 2016. Only 21 are being made. But does the guitar world need such a thing?
Nomac Majesty

The full name of the piece is Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci Signature NOMAC Majesty Guitar in the colour (wait for it) Timeworn matte silver. That almost sounds like a title of nobility or perhaps it's just supposed to make you feel special when you buy one. NOMAC is a made-up word, in case you were wondering, a contraction of "Noise Machine", a device that appears in the story told in The Astonishing. Also astonishing is the price tag – almost $10,000 changes hands when you purchase one of these guitars, so you had better check the specifications in great detail.
Here's an overview of some of the features and specs of this guitar.
Unique Features

NOMAC medallion
A handcrafted, black anodized aluminium NOMAC locket sits behind the tremolo and features white-gold backlit ruby eyes.
DiMarzio Sonic Ecstasy Pickups
Two humbuckers with individual, laser-cut pickup caps offer a breathtakingly striking tone with prominent mids and basses.
Custom Black Diamond pots
The three red anodised custom aluminium pot buttons carry 5 mm, 1.62 carat rose cut diamonds in a 14-carat white gold setting.
Abalone insert
The ebony fretboard adorns a 15-piece Abalone Majesty inlay between the 11th and 13th fret.
Omniscient Eyes
Six acrylic discs with omniscient eyes in hand-bent stainless steel frames surround a laser-cut, hand-painted NOMAC tank.
Engraved custom backplate
The numbered backplate carries an optical circuit design and a laser-printed aluminium nameplate. With autographed certificate of authenticity.

Too Bling?

This guitar is going to divide opinion, of course. It is produced in very small numbers, so we will probably never get to play one or even see one, for that matter. I think it is a little gaudy myself, but one part of me thinks it is kind of cool as a piece of artwork.
But, no I would not buy one, not even if I had 10k spare laying around doing nothing, I'd buy Bitcoin and maybe one of the recent MusicMan St Vincent models instead...

But they need to address the Quality Control first

Thought for a minute this was a touch sensitive LED monitor underfoot but no, you print out your own footboard layour and slip it under the clear sleeve - doesn't even sound like it's backlit. Hmmm... :(

Alas - I wont be there this year.  Baby is due Jan 17...and convincing my wife that I need to be looking at new gear at that point is unlikely.  Shoot, this year I suspect I wont even give a flying hoot about new gear...

White Pine 2x4 is the only wood they are now allowed to import.....

Rhcole

...and may be the only wood they can afford to buy after all of their "debt restructurings" are completed next year!
Look for a return of this guitar, this time produced by Gibson next year for NAMM 2019!!!
http://www.vintageguitar.com/3681/la-baye-2x4/

Here's a preview of the press release:

Henry Juszkiewicz, President and CEO of Gibson stated:
"Here at Gibson we know a thing or two about great vintage guitars. We are excited to bring back the innovative design of the original La-Baye 2X4, this time under the Gibson brand. Our new version of this guitar will bring classic Sixties soul into the modern era, with high-end Gibson appointments such as Robot Tuners and custom finishes including the revolutionary "Zoot Suit" layered woods that defined Gibson in the early 2000's!"

The Gibson La-Baye will be offered via the Gibson Custom Shop located in Beijing, China in a number of custom finishes with the base White Pine model retailing for $6995 and the upscale Zoot Suit version retailing for $11,995.
These guitars will be available first at Guitar Centers throughout the U.S., with Walmart acting as the primary distributor beginning in the fourth quarter of 2019.

I am sorry, but I think Henry is doing drugs ::)

You mean that story is not a spoof written by a comedy writer?

I meant no offense sir to your writing skills.

I just find it hard to believe that Gibson is going to be selling a $12,000 guitar that will be built in a Gibson custom shop in China and distributed by Walmart.

Seems a bit mad of a marketing scheme for a company that just ran my DAW down into the dirt.
