I have yet to be able to adjust a bass guitar pcm tone or modeling to make the bass patch sound more authentic.  Does anyone have any bass patches that they are will to share ...  Just for clarity a patch to make my electric 6 string guitar sound like a bass.

My patches are pretty specialised for my setup unfortunately. However, I can give you a few tips on the things I do to make my bass sounds work.

  • I use the modelling rather than the PCM sounds where possible. No delay to mess with the feel and no glitches.
  • The PB (Precision Bass) model has a smoother sound and fatter low end that works well for cleaner bass sounds. The JB (Jazz Bass) is brighter and snappier and works well for crunchy sounds.
  • Keep the bass model volume on full volume to drive the amp model properly.
  • Use the AMP/Mod chain and load one of the Bass models (I use the Bass Clean almost exclusively, but YMMV)
  • Keep the speaker as Original. NB:Set the mic type to Flat - that'll give you the best low end. On Mic, Center mic position and mic at 100
  • Also experiment with turning the speaker and mic models off completely, just using the amp controls for EQ.
  • EQ the amp model to taste (I use Bass:60, Mids:45, Treb:35 and Pres:0 - but I always have the natural guitar sound on via another processor entirely, and that provides a lot of the attack and high end).

Also, experiment with using the Nylon Guitar shifted down an octave for a really big, fat sound that has some characteristics of an acoustic upright (with less attack).

Hope that helps.

I just realised I didn't mention the Presence control with the amp EQ - I keep that dialled to 0.

It is exactly what I was missing in my bass tones...I should have asked this a year ago..

I had fun using a stompbox in the chain to make my bass model stereo. I think it was a deep chorus with zero or nearly zero cycle speed.

Fortune smiled on me one day and I ended up getting a real bass. Rather than buying a $250 GK bass unit, I plug my bass 1/4" jack into the GK unit on my guitar, and switch the GR-55 to bass mode. It looks funny, but it totally works (just to access the FX chain, of course). The presets give a huge selection of amp/EQ/FX setups.

You might get more ideas on creating cool bass patches for your 6 string guitar just by studying the presets in bass mode.

One thing I found in playing real bass is that even without using the pickup switch or any effects you can really change the tone by where you pluck the string (how close to the bridge). I wonder how much that would work for simulating bass.
electric: Epiphone Dot semihollow body, acoustic: mahogany jumbo, recording: Cubase Artist 11 or Tascam DP008
