April 18 – April 24
Apr 18 at 7 PM to Apr 24 at 7 PM in UTC+02
pin
Acropolis. Verdi, 254. Barcelona.

Details
During this workshop participants will be introduced to digital sound programming and physical computing (with the use of sensors). Each participant will be creating his/her own personal interface for interacting with digital sound, mainly focusing on musical projects but not strictly. After a basic introduction to the visual programming environment PureData (instead of code we will be creating data-flow diagrams for the sound synthesis) and Arduino we will then move on towards the creative part where each participant will focus on the materialization of his/her individual project. Lastly there will be an introduction to embedded computers with a focus on the Raspberry Pi, in case some of the participants want to create a stand-alone interface and forego the need to use a laptop.

Some possible project ideas:

An interactive glove to be used with instruments with fiddlestick (a violin, for example) or other instruments where the performer makes hand movements (trombone)
An interactive drum set, where the performer has the possibility to use drums as sensors either for affecting the sound of the instrument or to trigger other processes (like playing back sound samples)
A looper with a variety of functions (normal and reversed playback, overdubbing, recording over a reversed part, etc.
A DIY Theremin
A classic clavier synthesizer or any other kind of synthesizer

Level: Beginner/Intermediate. During the workshop we will be mainly using PureData for sound synthesis, but more advanced users should be able to follow the workshop using other environments like SuperCollider.

Language: English

Tutor: Alexandros Drymonitis

Alexandros Drymonitis is a musician active in the field of experimental (electronic) music and noise. He is an MMus graduate of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he studied the guitar and composition. His musical practice focuses on the texture of sound and noise and explores the borders of control, keeping form as a main goal. His educational aim is to provide acquired knowledge on multimedia programming. He is currently a member of Medea Electronique and Self-Absorption and a collaborator of the ARTéfacts Ensemble. As a member of Medea Electronique, he is a main organizer of the "Electric Nights Festival", a 27-hour long event of experimental electronic music taking in Athens. He is also a founding member of the Patching Circle Athens, a collective group of users of visual programming languages, has taught guitar at the Music School of Amsterdam and Philippos Nakas Conservatory in Athens, as well as electronic music programming at the Musical Praxis Conservatory, also in Athens. He is currently a freelancer in the field of electronic music and media programming and a workshop lecturer. Alexandros is the author of the book Digital Electronics for Musicians, published by Apress.
