How does the swopper work?
The active swopper swivel chair consists of a cast-iron foot ring, a spring strut with adjustable steel spring and a convex-shaped, padded seat. Height, spring hardness and sideways movement are individually adjustable. The sprung seat with all round movement responds to each movement you make. This minimally, but extremely effectively motion stimulates the numerous groups of muscles in your back, abdomen and legs.

The beautiful thing about it: active muscles cannot tense up; they are strengthened and remain fit. The same applies to the intervertebral discs which are constantly loaded differently by the numerous involuntary changes of position. For sustained elasticity and flexibility. The swopper activates your entire body and therefore ensures better transport of blood to the heart. This stimulates your circulation, encourages you to sit upright, breathe deeper and thus increase the supply of oxygen to the blood. This is good for body and mind and also does wonders for your mood.

Height Adjustment - You can adjust the swopper quickly and continuously to meet your individual requirements: seat height from 22" to 27.5". Simply lift the lever under the seat and lighten the load on the seat - ideal for all sizes and table heights.

Sideways Movement - You decide how much you want to move. The sideways movement is decisive for training the back muscles. You adjust this with the hand-wheel under the spring strut. We recommend setting it a little firmer at first, then later as flexible as possible. The essential criterion: your personal well-being.

Spring Action - The free-moving spiral spring made of high-quality steel enables the actual swopping - the up-and-down movement when sitting that is unique in the world. You can set the spring hardness individually according to your weight. In most cases the spring color matches the seat.

Base Ring Features - The stable base ring made of die-cast aluminium/steel is available with combi-gliders for textile-covered floors and for hard floors. It can be used on any type of floor. (Casters are available on the swopper AIR)

Adjustable Spring Hardness - You decide how hard the spring is to be: simply turn the sleeve to continuously adjust the spring hardness to suit your needs. The chair's 'bounce" will be softer or stiffer depending on the hardness selected.

Yes the price seems ridiculous - but after sitting on a Swopper Stool for nearly two days straight this past weekend at Thomas Nordegg's Studio with his  TimeSpeed SONICA system, and assisting the RevPad Team with programming . .

-  my back is much happier after working back to back 12 hour work days while sitting on the Swopper Guitar Stool = no back fatigue !

GraemeJ

I'll have to take your word for it - there's no way I would spend that much on a stool :) .

I'm finding it hard to believe that not having a back support is better than having one. Most people I know complain bitterly if they have sat on a stool without back support for any length of time.  In fact, a lot of people complained (on a local forum) about how uncomfortable they found the original, backless, stools in a local bar.  Rather than lose custom, the bar actually went and bought some stools with backs.

The only thing I ever found that was good for my back was a kneeling stool. like this one - http://cheaper-furniture.com/img/kneeling_chair_1.jpg - but it did my knees in instead, so I had to give up using it.

$1686.70 for the Playpal - turns out the Swopper is a bargain!  :D

So if money isn't an issue I should buy the duck? Since money and portability are issues I'll stick with this for now.

Alas, antique link wouldn't open for me. That Swopper does look interesting though as a way to sneak some core exercise in for those of us who are sedentarily challenged. I used an actuarial calculator recently and determined that at this point I could add seven months to my average life expectancy if I exercised four hours a week. The proposition became much less attractive when I calculated that five of the seven months would be spent exercising...

Sitting on the Swopper last weekend,  I discovered I could play guitar for 8-10 hours straight without back fatigue = more music productivity for the limited time I have left in this life.

Sounds like you're giving the Swopper a big thumbs up. Have you ordered one yet? I'd be interested in your hands on review after a month of use. Too many things around the homestead that sounded great on paper but are used as dust gatherers instead.

Next time I have a spare $700

But I'll be  checking  Ebay  / Craigslist weekly for a used Swopper

Good luck on that then and looking forward to the review. Wifey is a yoga instructor, massage therapist, and avid shopper so it may be that a review will be coming from me as well. I do wonder how it'd do with my rig in that it's common for me to have one foot on an expression pedal and the other foot tapping buttons for the looper and effects. The Swopper looks like it might be more like the Backflipper if I tried that.

Review the Adrian Belew video in 1st post

and lots of pedal switching for me sitting in Swopper last weekend here on Thomas Nordegg's SONICA  FX rig:

(Look past the music stand )

Fair enough. I hadn't been thinking in terms of actually picking one up but now I'm intrigued and so I'll take a look at the vids. I sent Wifey an email with the Swopper site and we'll see what she thinks about picking one up as she's been using one of those kneeling seats while giving it mixed reviews. She's dying to get me more exercise as well and so this would probably be the easiest G.A.S. attack sale ever here at the homestead.

I actually find this one even more intriguing, since I can never quite decide whether I'm sitting or standing when working on high-tech guitar stuff:

But at $600, I may just have to bear that indecision.  :)

It does beg for a DIY solution!

Many office chairs at Staples already have spring loaded seats at $120 - just remove the arms so you can sit and play guitar

or use  Boat Chair parts

I like that.  Unfortunately, doesn't seem to be available on this side of the pond and I suspect importing one would be both expensive and a hassle.  Plenty of collapsible chairs around, but they all seem to have armrests, which make them useless for a guitarist.

However, now you've given me the idea, I'll start looking for something like this that is available here.

I agree with Elantric....If you have a look under most office chairs (as I seemed to do a lot when I was still working in an office and responding to other people's cries for help as to why their chair was falling to bits!), you'll find that in about 95% of examples, removing the arms is a simple matter of removing four to six bolts..

Guess what I'm sitting on while I type this????       8)

Secondhand, five-leg base with casters, adjustable height and back angle, and $5 to $30 depending how lucky you get at garage sales!      ..at that price you can afford to replace them every couple of years when the gas struts go South..

...and if you save the arms up until you next visit your friendly scrap metal dealer, you can almost get your money back!  (those suckers can be about half the weight of the chair!)

Read slower!!!   ....I'm typing as fast as I can...

Arm rests are a guitarist's enemy!  The last time I brought an office chair home and realized the arm rests weren't removable, I cut them off with a reciprocating saw.  In my living room.  True story.  :)

Best of luck on your quest GraemeJ!

As regards removable arms...

I rather like the type where the arm swings down when going from desk (gaming) mode to guitar mode.
