I have bought the FTP and would like to know what configurations people are gigging wth. I play every week and need something that is reliable and predictable. Of course I also want something that plays well and sound great! What are you using?
Music director at local church and gigging musician:
Variax JTV-69s, FTP pickups, Line6 Helix, EHX LesterG, MIDI Expression I/O, MacBook Pro w/ GigPerformer VST host, Aspen Pittman Spacestation V.3

FTP with win 10 laptop.
Cantabile 3 Performer running numerous soft synths/samplers as well as an instantiation of the tripleplay app.
Use a line 6 helix as sound interface and midi footswitch controller (as well as amp/fx modeler and controller for my Variax via VDI).

Muse Receptor VIP and Receptor2 ProMax.    I used a Mac laptop before but it was just too fragile and error prone to be reliable.   I was always so worried about the gear performing that MY performances suffered.

Muse Research is shut down these days, but the players are cool if you are tech savvy, and they're a lot cheaper now on the used market.
I run Native Instruments Komplete Ultimate 9 on both my units as well as a TON of other VST plugins.

The receptors won't run the FTP software host, but you can configure the hardware (I use a Mac to run the FTP app to config, but it WILL work right off the bat without ever running the app) and then it's all plug and play with the Receptor and the FTP USB receiver.

YMMV

Thanks for the info. So you're running the FTP software along side the other VSTs or as a host?

Cantabile 3 Performer looks like such a pain and a headache to boot! Seems like it would impede any creative flow. What do you think it?

I only run the FTP software inside of my VST host program (Cantabile 3 Performer). Its really only running to ensure that the proper settings are applied to the tripleplay. I do this because I have found that I sometimes will not get the proper retriggering of notes when I slide notes unless I run the app. I need to revisit the FTP documentation and see if any of the programming has changed. It may be unnecessary to run the FTP app at all, but I need to really learn the programming of the FTP better. When I got the unit I experimented with Hardware mode and found some odd behaviour, but there has been a number of updates to the firmware since launch. I know that how I have it configured (having the app run), it works perfectly. *if it aint broke, don't fix it*. The FTP app seems to take up very little system resources within cantabile.

Cantabile allows you to run virtual racks, each with their own routing/filters. This makes it a breeze to set up "bindings" to external hardware so you can control whatever parameters you like in your soft synths. Cantabile has a bit of a learning curve, but its really not too bad. There are youtube videos which explain the main functions. Its extremely versatile. You may not need the "Performer" version. I sprung for it, but I think you can most likely make do with the middle tier version, depending on how complex your setup and how much load time you will tolerate between songs. Performer allows you to create a special type of rack that needn't be reloaded from scratch if you switch songs, which saves load times.

A big reason I went with cantabile is that I use a ton of alternate tunings. Live I use about 5 tunings (variax guitar), and I needed a way to easily transpose each string for each song. Cantabile allows you to transpose each string at the point of entering the program (via an input filter), and then you can direct the transposed signals to however many soft synths you want.

I am putting together a video of my setup now and will go over a few of these topics in more detail.

I'm using a Ketron SD 40.. It acts as a Midi Host for the FTP and the Sounds and Patches are great... Just plug and go.
