Katana 50 MkII footswitch idea - switch AND expression pedal together!

The idea is straightforward. A small metal housing (for common ground), a DPDT stomp switch. Stomp it once, it switches you to your dual footswitch. Stomp it again, it switches you to the expression pedal.

The only issue would be: does Katana allow you to switch between footswitch and expression pedal on the fly? If so, this solution should work. Of course, you'd lose whatever settings are on the switches - but you lose those when you unplug anyway, so no harm no foul.

I have a Marshall dual latching footswitch in a metal housing. Think I'll add a DPDT stomp switch to it, along with a stereo jack into which the expression pedal will be plugged, and see how it goes.

Thanks. I imagined that would be the case... you saved me a bit of work. Although the idea still has validity, even if you have to power cycle the amp.

I plugged an expression pedal into the jack. The default behavior is to change patches, just like a footswitch. I got the amp used, but in pristine condition.... Is that supposed to be the default behavior?

Moog. It has a switch on the bottom: STANDARD <> OTHER

In 'standard' mode, it does what I described. In 'other' mode it does nothing. I've used it in many contexts, and it has always worked fine. Used it, for example, with Pigtronix' Envelope Phaser and with the EHX Pitch Fork.

Btw, I just played thru this amp this evening with my jazz group. A guy who has a Henriksen exclaimed how great the Katana sounded.

Afaik, you must use Boss Tone Studio to assign a target function for the connected Expression pedal

A bit of searching shows this is a known thing, that the pot value of the Moog Exp-3 does not come close to matching the requirements of the Boss amps. So it goes. Yet one more pedal to add to the collection.

The other thing will be finding a way to extend the USB cable. It's a C type connector on the side of the AirStep KAT to a 'printer' type connector on the Katana amp. Dunno if a repeater cable can be found for that, let alone one that will function in this context. Though this being MIDI data, the need for high throughput is not there AFAIK so a simple 5-meter Type B to Type C might suffice.

Protect the fragile  Airstep KAT USBC connection with a right angle adapter

Then use a qualified 20 ft USBC to USBB data cable to the Katana

I did something similar for myself using this scheme:
You cannot view this attachment.
There is a bank switch, an expression pedal, and one knob.
I should note that it does not always work stably. Possibly the poor quality switches I used are to blame (since this was an experiment).

A knob too! Clever! Great idea.

What specific resistance value is Katana expecting to 'see' to determine that it should operate the TRS as an expression unit instead of a pair of latching switches?

10k linear

But on Katana, you must map an Expression pedal as controller to your prefered target FX using Boss Tone Studio

As a precaution, I also ordered a right angle (down) adapter for the USB B connector on the back of the Katana. I'd far rather have these things disconnect under duress than yank on the jack and damage it.

The gadgets arrived. The Nektar pedal is plug & play; it handles system volume by default. No need for assignment for that. It did come with a built-in 6 foot cable, which was not shown in the pics or described in the listing. So the TRS 15 foot cable needs to be returned, and a 10 foot TRS extension cable procured instead. But this is a tiny problem.

I will start assigning the pedal on the various channels  8)

Additionally, the IPad app says I have SIX channels available for storage! I'm guessing that I do not, but it would be interesting lol
