VG99 Versus Superego?
Chumly:
Can the VG99 do something similar to what the Electro-Harmonix Superego can do?
Obliged!
aliensporebomb:
Well, there are a number of things that the Superego can do that the VG-99 can. None of these, of course, are in the factory patches.
ProGuitarShop.com has a demo with Andy playing the intro of "Shine on your Crazy Diamond" and I think Kope's patch for the 99 does it better:

Listen to the MP3 that Kope posted and marvel - it's so nice.
Bill Ruppert did an EHX demo for the Superego and did some really nice sounds here:
Electro-Harmonix Effectology Special Edition "Superego Synth Engine"
I'd say most of the sounds you hear in that video are do-able in a "99 version" of that sound. But, I believe the Superego has a really interesting textural sound of its own. The timbre of the 99 tends to be really smooth and the timbre of the superego has a little bit of a rougher sound to my ears.
Sometimes it sounds like a really nice analog synthesizer from the 70s - other times it reminds me of the 12-bit version of the PPG Wave the 2.3. The 99 can get some of that sound but it's a bit smoother in texture.
Chumly:
Much thanks ASB, I own a VG99 but have yet to really dive into the beast, and I have not tried the Superego in the flesh!
Now_And_Then:
Now that is a very interesting pedal.
While the Effectology video is very good, the problem with it, for me, is that it is always being used in conjunction with other pedals, making it somewhat difficult to know what the SuperEgo is doing, and what the pedals in the effects loop are doing. I will have to do some more research, it would appear.
If only those EHX pedals were able to save and load presets, that could be uploaded to a computer. They would not even need a computer editor - just the ability to use a computer-based librarian. If that were the case, I would surely own most of their more "sound-designer"-type pedals i.e. POG, MicroSynth, this SuperEgo, and others too numerous to mention. I am very concerned about not being able to exactly recreate a sound either a few days or weeks or a few years after I have originally recorded it.
Bill Ruppert:
If you want to hear the basic effect with out other outboard effects search videos for the EHX Freeze pedal.
There are hundreds of them.
The Supereego has an effects loop and THAT is why this video uses external effects!!!
And No, the VG-99 does not have the gliss feature so it will never sound just like it.
The EHX HOG had the freeze effects before the VG-99 was even released.
Its a effect designed by David Cockerell.
He designed the EMS synth made famous by Pink Floyd and Brian Eno.
