got a gk2, no install kit, ideas?
« on: June 01, 2012, 09:36:45 PM »

I bought a cheap gk2 off ebay, and all it is is the pickup, none of the little random pieces to help install it with.

Any ideas on how to do a "scratch" install?  Guitar is an LP styled dean evo ss.

So far, I used some double-sided tape to stick guitar picks to the bottom of the tune-o-matic bridge, and then stuck the pickup onto them.  It's still way to low though.  Anybody done this have some tips?

Elantric usually has the links for the manuals around - I searched the Roland site and found the GK3 install for that type of guitar but not the GK2.

Yeah i have the manual...the problem is the manual expects you to install using the stuff they provide with the pickup.  I didn't get any of that stuff, so i have to come up with something.

You might mention what 'stuff' is missing. Perhaps someone one the forum has spare parts that meet your needs.

Just the little plastic spacers.

Head to a hobby store or craft store to obtain thin plastic material+ double sided carpet tape, and improvise a "shim".

Those GK PU spacers are rather trivial.

In the past I have used a few different approaches to making spacers for GK mounting. The simplest and cleanest looking solution I came up with was carving a wooden block to the appropriate dimensions. Start with a block with two holes drilled to fit the posts of the tune-o-matic bridge, wide enough to make a shelf to attach the gk pickup between the bridge and the mag pickup. Cut another block to fit between the bridge and the mag pickup, sitting on the "shelf" part of the first block. Attach the gk pickup to the second block using tiny wood screws. Sand the bottom of the second block down until you get the exact height you want for your gk. When you have the height just right sand another 1/2mm off and glue the second block to the first using wood glue. You end up with no alterations to the guitar, a solid mount for the GK, and a total expense of about a dollar (if you have access to a drill and a handsaw).

There's also mounting brackets on ebay (not mine, never tried them) that mount on the tune-o-matic posts in a similar fashion

and one that attaches to the bridge pickup ring
