MAC OS X 10.11 El Capitan Update Advisory

Dear PreSonus Customer
Apple OS X 10.11 is about to be released. Before you update, we wanted to make you aware of some compatibility issues that may occur with your PreSonus hardware and software.

StudioLive 16.4.2AI, 24.4.2AI, 32.4.2AI, RM16AI, and RM32AI:
Smaart is not functioning in OS X 10.11.0. This appears to be an Apple issue as it is functioning in the current beta of 10.11.1. If you use an AI-Series or RM-Series mixer and rely on Smaart, we advise you to wait to update your OS until this issue is resolved.

Classic (non-AI) StudioLive 16.0.2, 16.4.2, 24.4.2 mixers, FireStudio Mobile, FireStudio Project:
Universal Control version 1.7.2 or lower will not function correctly on OS X 10.11.1. You must update to Version 1.7.3 which is already available for download in your my.presonus.com account.

AudioBox 22VSL, 44VSL, 1818VSL:
Starting with OS X 10.11, Apple has restricted kernel level mixing access for third party vendors. This means that VSL software will no longer function on Mac operating systems beyond version 10.10. On OS X version 10.11 or higher, AudioBox VSL devices will only operate as class-complaint audio interfaces. Please refer to this article here that explains the issue in more detail and how to resolve it.
If you currently do not use VSL software, your AudioBox VSL interface will continue to function as you expect.

All PreSonus customers:
We have tested Studio One 2.6.5, Notion 4.0, and higher versions. These products are compatible with OS X 10.11. That said, we have seen notifications from other vendors including Native Instruments that there are also 10.11 compatibility issues with some of their products.
To avoid any issues, we strongly advise you to check with all of your hardware and software providers before updating to OS X 10.11.

Please click here for our full, up to date compatibility statement for Mac OS X 10.11
Thank you for being a PreSonus customer!

CRITICAL compatibility warning with the upcoming Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan upgrade

Before upgrading to the latest version of Mac OS X – version 10.11 El Capitan, please consider these potentially serious issues concerning your KOMPLETE, TRAKTOR, and MASCHINE products. Two major issues have been identified:

1. NI plug-ins do not pass the AUDIO UNITS validation in Mac OS X 10.11 – Logic Pro affected
In Mac OS X 10.11, Native Instruments AUDIO UNITS plug-ins will not pass the AU validation and will therefore not be available in Logic Pro. The root cause of this issue has been identified and a solution is currently being developed in close contact with Apple.

2. Incompatibility with some older NI hardware
There are compatibility issues between some older NI devices and Apple's upcoming operating system. This issue triggers a 'kernel panic' – this serious problem will crash the connected computer immediately, resulting in loss of any unsaved work, or serious disruption of a performance.

The following hardware is affected:
TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 (MK1)
TRAKTOR KONTROL X1 (MK1)
TRAKTOR AUDIO 2 (MK1)
AUDIO 8 DJ
AUDIO 4 DJ
AUDIO 2 DJ
MASCHINE (MK1)
GUITAR RIG 3 (RIG KONTROL 3 hardware)
There are beta drivers already available that fix this issue. Updated drivers will be released as soon as they have been fully tested on OS X 10.11 – shortly after Apple releases OS X 10.11 to the public.

Download the beta drivers here

To keep your system working normally with the affected products, we strongly recommend waiting before upgrading your computer to OS X 10.11 El Capitan until these issues have been fully solved by either Native Instruments or Apple.

Stay up to date on all future developments regarding Mac OS X 10.11 compatibility here

Thank you for your attention,

The Native Instruments team

Can we make this a sticky note for Mac users?

I've verified that both the VG-99 and RC-300 as well as the Midiman Midisport 2x2 do not work under ElCap.
I've got a couple more devices to test that I will edit this message later today to report on as well.

Indeed, the VG-99 actually flashes USB OFFLINE on the front panel when connected.
So it appears it tries to load the existing driver and fails to do so.

FYI.

Luckily my main boot drive is still Yosemite and should be for the foreseeable future.

Firewire Core Audio Driver support terminated in OSX El Capitan.

Apple began to phase out FireWire connectivity in 2012 on all Mac computers. With significant improvements to USB audio and the introduction of Thunderbolt, the performance and stability offered with FireWire audio interfaces has been surpassed.
As a result, Apple has discontinued development and maintenance of their FireWire Core Audio driver for the new Mac OS X El Capitan.

This also effects FW/TB converters.

USB/Thunderbolt should be ok...

I have a FW... with a FW/TB converter >:(  GRRRRR!

So USB 2.0 or 3.0 should be equal right? Of course TB is King...

In the old days FW800 (800 mbps) was certainly faster than USB 2.0 (480 mbps).  However USB 3.0 (5 gbps) communications are much faster than FW.  Thunderbolt is 10 gbps.  I think it's time to upgrade.... ;D ;D ;D

Back in 2009, I could use my MOTU 828 Fireware interface on both MACS AND PCS - but try to find a 2015 Mac or Windows PC ( or Camcorder) with a Firewire port

Thunderbolt has already gone through version 1 and faster version 2  - There remain very few Windows PCs that have Thunderbolt ports ( HP and Asus high models do)  - but no windows Thunderbolt audio drivers from Thunderbolt Audio interface vendors becomes a hurdle.

I would not invest too heavily in Thunderbolt - since the new "USB C" standard is growing strength -

I imagine by 2019,  "USB C " will be desired audio interface for  Windows PC and Mac

Not every new 2015 Windows PC's with only USB 3.0 ports can work with the USB Audio interfaces  - without randoms pos and crackles  - or simply not work at all.
(Read our Audio Interface area)

Windows PC USB 3.0 compatible chipsets for Audio Interfaces

2016 is approaching, and  USB 2.0 Ports are history on most new computers ,  its time to google search your Computer Model number and specific USB Audio Interface model  to find if  its works or if  there will be problems.

Luckily my 2015  Asus Q551LN laptop with only USB 3.0 ports works fins with my USB audio interfaces designed for USB 2.0  - but some machines are not capable and will have problems for any pro audio use.

Its an era of transition for sure.

Thanks Elantric.
I run all of my stuff from a 2013 iMac, still on 10.9.5 Mavericks. Yosemite has a reputation of being heavy (it destroyed performance of my 2012 Macbook Pro (still with 5400 RPM drive) )
My audio interface relies on FW Core Audio and it's a 2in-2out hooked to a mixer. (Behringer FCA202)

I was preparing myself to a world without VG99 drivers so I was also looking for a combo Audio/MIDI Interface.

I was looking into those good for my budget:

https://www.zoom-na.com/products/studio-recording/audio-interfaces/zoom-tac-2-thunderbolt-audio-converter (199 Euros, No MIDI)
https://www.zoom-na.com/products/studio-recording/audio-interfaces/zoom-tac-2r-thunderbolt-audio-converter  (349 Euros)
https://www.zoom-na.com/products/studio-recording/audio-interfaces/zoom-uac-2-usb-30-audio-converter  (279 Euros)

I was inclined to go Thunderbolt and Zoom makes it at a reasonable price. After your post I have learned that Zoom makes a USB 3.0 interface. I too think that USB-C will be ubiquitous and USB 3.1 specs will give TB an hard time. However the Audio Interface makers are usually slow to intake new standards.
That leaves me with a small investment  in TB while the world changes. I have still one year of Apple Care and I won't rush into a new iMac when it ends. So if I ever move to 10.11 then I have to get an Audio interface because my FCA202 will be deprecated.
That's my receipt for transition at the moment but I am open to suggestion and sudden changes along the way.

All the best,
Pasha

I'm told that VG-99 / RC-300 etc will work on ElCap now.  I'll try it on my bootable ElCap partition I rarely boot.  I'm still reluctant to move to El Cap as I have a graphics program that heavily uses OpenGL and with ElCap's focus on "metal" that might be a deal breaker for that app.  More as I get it.

Update:

I was able to confirm during my brief test this evening that the VG-99, RC-300 and I02 by Alesis all work with El Capitan.  I haven't converted my main partition over year but I need to test various software packages first.  At least it's not a total deal breaker.

Thanks for this.
By chance did you test a Firewire Core Audio Driver Interface or Firewire Audio with own drivers?

The Internet is confusing on this subject. It seems that all started with Apogee saying goodbye to OSX 10.11 and this triggered a wave of discontent. However other brands like Motu and Focusrite have certified their FW hardware with 10.11 with new drivers. With Yosemite my FW Core Audio still works and some report success with some brands on OSX 10.11. In any case I would trust Elantric more than the whole internet forums community.. so or I stop with Yosemite or I have to get a good enough USB 3 or TB 1 card.

Happy new year,
Regards
Pasha

QuoteApogee
Apogee has included OS X 10.11 in its list of supported operating systems for its products' that use Thunderbolt and USB. Unfortunately, Apogee's FireWire interfaces can no longer be supported due to Apple's decision to cease development of its FireWire Core Audio Driver. This doesn't mean they won't work, just the Apogee will not offer support if they don't work. If you choose to upgrade and are using one of Apogee's interfaces, you will be doing so on your own accord (you likely received an e-mail from Apogee with this information).

Of course in 6 months Apple will release yet another new version of OSX with yet another new set of problems

And that in itself is the problem.

They obviously have a roadmap direction which only seems driven to making older devices obsolete.
Just like the latest IOS9 update, which insists older devices should update to, only to find the device is now unusable and must be upgraded.

iConnectivity has been aware of and working on resolution of an audio clocking issue found in the latest OS releases OS X El Capitan and iOS9. The issue is when the iConnectivity device is set as the audio clock master and the sample rate is 44.1 kHz or 88.2 kHz, noticeable audible clicks and pops can be heard about every second in outgoing audio from your computing device.

This is a critical issue for iConnectivity and we have spent a lot of time and effort to find and resolve it. What has been discovered is that in these specific situations, the operating system is not keeping up with the samples required by the audio clock master. The graph below shows over the course of time how the OS audio samples continually fall behind the iConnectivity device-provided samples over time.

As audio is very sensitive to lost data and we can only buffer so much time lag; eventually our resynchronization of the timing results in a gap of audio data - generating the audible clock or pop. This is not a result of the firmware in iConnectivity devices nor the device drivers. It is a mismatch in timing and sampling in the core of the operating system, which results in noncompliance with the published developer's standards.

We have been working closely with other parties to get the issue identified and resolved. Most recently, we have been assured that the problem is fixed, and are hopeful to see in next beta releases of the operating systems.

We appreciate your patience. In meantime we recommend making your Mac OS X El Capitan or iOS9 device the audio clock master, which can be done through our iConfig application. If you need to have two computing devices working together, both of course cannot be the audio clock master, so in this case we recommend using 48 kHz or 96 kHz sample rates.

We will be sure to let all our customers know as soon as a fix has been released through the operating system.

Elantric

There are many reports that a new Mac with OSX El Capitan cant even playback any audio at 44.1kHz ( the Audio CD PCM Audio Standard) without introducing pops and crackles.

Hi Elantric-

So, just to be crystal clear, I cannot load the VG-99 editor 1.01A on my Macbook Pro running El Capitan?  was able to download and install the latest drivers for 10.11 but when I tried downloaded and tried to install the Editor/Librarian, it starts to install then says there is no software to install! It was driving me nuts, but now it looks like it's not just me. Let me know if there is any work around insight. Thanks, Dave Deavenport

iConnectMIDI

We're not ready to pop the corks yet, but the latest beta versions of El Capitan 10.11.4 and iOS 9.3 have fixed the infamous 44.1/88.2kHz clocking issue.

(Bear in mind that this hasn't been a fatal issue, nor is it unique to iConnectivity interfaces! It's just a serious one requiring workarounds, i.e. please read the information in the link carefully.)

For obvious reasons we can't recommend that our users sign up to install public beta operating system software. It may not even be available, because it gets taken down from time to time in between versions.

So this is not the Big Announcement. But that flat blue line in the graph is good news - it shows the time holding steady, rather than going uphill.

For anyone, for whom working with Logic is important...  and who is thinking about updating their current version of OS X....

Don't!!!!

At least not until it has been fully tested with different hardware/software/drivers etc.... and after ensuring that your current hardware is compatible with the version of OS X that you wish to upgrade to.. and has the appropriate drivers, where applicable.. that work and have been fully tested with that new version of OS X

If you really want to try out a new version of OS X  then install that OS X version on to an external Hard Drive, install Logic Pro on that drive along with any drivers/plugins etc... and then boot to that. and test thoroughly.... leaving your current configuration alone and working...

or...

Make a full clone backup of your current system drive using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! (My personal choice) to an external drive before you update to latest OSX and then if things don't work out you can quickly and easily revert back to your current config with ease..

Note: The sole use of Time Machine as a clone backup is not recommended as not all files will be restored correctly and you may find you have to do a great deal of manual tweaking/fixing/re-registering to get everything back to normal. TM is great for individual file restoration but for full cloned restores, not so good!

Based on past experiences.. as seen by the many 100s of posts made in  the Logic Pro forum after the release of Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite...there could well be incompatibility issues that will rear their ugly heads upon the launch of the next new OS X version... so be warned!

So again... as always when OS X or Logic Pro is updated... Take your time and let others find the bugs/issues etc before you install it yourself.. or if you insist on doing so.. make proper clone backups first... to save a lot of wasted time and effort later.

I have Mac book pro El Capitan and I non have  0 problem with this  . it work very well  . Yes I use only Apple  Logic pro 10.2  and software instruments are great !.Apple just released Logic Pro X 10.2 update, and it is massive. The Alchemy synth has been amazingly improved and made more powerful (like it wasn't already super-mega-powerful enough), new UI, just amazing! Remember that LPX costs less than Alchemy used to cost by itself. Plus a boat load of new loops, are both worth it alone, but the very long list of enhancements and updates is amazing.

Just to report that the MOTU 828 MKIII Firewire audio interface that requires the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter will not function on 2014 or newer  iMac 27"  running EL Capitan.

Same hardware setup above used to work fine with OSX Yosemite, but even with latest MOTU Audio Driver  - no dice for 2005 era MOTU828 MKII or 828 MKIII Firewire interface running with Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter

Your FW port may have crashed. Reset the NV RAM and see if that helps.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

QuoteMike, was it you who wrote that Apple and Intel had some kind of conflict that was affecting the stability of FireWire?
Not quite that simple. FireWire was a protocol fully supported by Apple and the PPC Consortium.

Some of the protocol works on Intel Macs, enough for Apple to still support it. Less of the FW protocol works over Thunderbolt. If TB does not pass certain parameters, than the TB-FW adapter can't either.

If using a third party FW adapter such as a PCI card, make certain that it has a Texas Instruments chip set. These work better. More of an issue for Windows but the same applies to the Mac.

---

But it worked fine with OSX Yosemite
