I suspect if the project is to remain open source, we must omit using real names.

ddlooping is not my real name. :)

Gumtown,

Crazy request

Can your GR-55 Editor "Export As *.XML file" ?

Also - WOW your GR-55 Editor is looking very nice!

Excellent job!

Might need to add a Alt Tuning definition window. The GR-55 pretty well matches the VG-99 Alt Tuning functions, have a look at the VG-99 Editor for a sample screen.

Also I have a look at a copy of the circa 2001 era "Veditor for VG-88" by Ralph Benchetrit (see full version attached below)
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/VEditor/

Has many same type GUI controls for the parameters found in the GR-55.(Synth Attack, Delay, Cutoff etc)

Also - I find screens like this very valuable  I can see several patches at a glance, and identify which FX are enabled on an array of patches

Hey WoW!! there's some GREAT ideas, ddlooping - i like the graphics you can conjure, i really dig those buttons, a 4 postion transparent *.png of those would be handy.
I like the look of those modern knobs too, is it possible to do an image for those? size = 2205 x 35 by 63 frame images over 270 degress rotation or what ever.
Thought they might look nice on the stompboxes.
Elantric, i will try to layout as much as i can in a logical order, the Analog GR synth controls are quite difficult to sqeeze in one page too, might have to look at smaller knobs.
Not sure on the *XML export (don't you mean *.xls spreadsheet? or is there a more technical purpose for the format), it should be possible, the editor internals are itself based on an *.XML structure, it currently will have the ability to export a patch data list in *.txt format or print it out.
Are you looking for something to compare values over a range of patches?

Keep the great ideas coming, i do appreciate it :-)

1) which ones? the short or the long plastic ones?
2) I'll try and find the time to do it. ;)

You're welcome :)

I do think it's best for me to wait until the editor is out of alpha stage though, so I can see what elements you want to put on each "page".
That would make it easier to design the graphical elements. ;)
For example, I have no idea what controls you intend to put on the "PCM1", "PCM2", "MODEL" and "NORMAL PICKUPS" modules as well as on the pedals.

Gumtown, while I understand your goal for less clutter -  I feel the GR-55 has too many parameters  - more than can be displayed on one single  screen. A few folks may want to use a Netbook and these are limited to 1024 x 600. Therefore, consider using pop up windows to display the things that remain missing.(Alt tuning, 4 band parametric EQ (x2), PCM Synth controls (x2), GK hex PU setup, sensitivity, Direction, etc.

Re XML Export -

YEs my goal is to have a function where I can parse out ALL GR-55 parameters for my patches, and display  / compare each parameter for all my GR-55 patches in an Excel spreadsheet.

MS Office supports XML file Import / Export since MS Office 2000.

I would prefer a native excel XLS file, but I can live with XML, just to make your job easier.

Certainly a Text File works perfectly well too!

If it's possible, keep an option for those stomp-box pedals (the big ones) :D

I use a tablet PC with a touch feature (like the iPad, but Windows), that would be great for this.

Note: ( I use my iPad now for wireless midi controllers. I have one for Garageband that works really well, and a general controller for Windows various DAWS. The wireless touch feature is fantastic, really fantastic. Apple has now included midi and a lot of developers are jumping on it, for good reason. It makes a great wireless controller.

It would be great if companies like Roland were to make apps for it. Maybe they will. I doubt the Ipad is going to fade away.
(but then again, things do) )

Sorry if i'm hijacking

I agree

We might find ourselves using a small Dell / HP netbook running Gumtowns GR-55 Editor connected to the GR-55, then launch a VPN Host program, and use a VPN connected IPad on a mic stand to control many GR-55 parameters on the fly at gigs.

Or use one of the new  Win7 Touchscreen Netbooks, like the  HP 5102 Touchscreen Netbook.

Don't know much about iApps (iDevice noob) but the framework the editor is built on is also 'reasonably' easily ported to Embeded Linux, Windows CE/Mobile, Symbian, and MeeGo. (only if they support midi in some way)..

I picked up the Gr-55 this evening.  If I can be of assistance, please let me know what documentation you need, and I will get it to you.  Fred

if you can do a full data download of the GR-55 via the USB memory stick, patches and all system data bulk dump.
i'm still waiting on a midi specification document to be compiled.

another request from a GR-55 user,
i am after i piece of data that the GR-55 sends when it has been sent a midi device identification message from the Roland Librarian.

The way to do that is from the librarian midi send be set to the GR-55, and the midi return not assigned to the GR-55.
The with some midi data capture software, like Midi-Ox or SendSx http://www.bome.com/products/sendsx
midi in set to GR-55, then set the librarian to do an initial connection,
and catpure the data, half of it should look like this.

F0 7E 10 06 02 with about 10 or so more bytes after.

Also (if possible) a temporary data area patch by extracting the "current" unsaved patch settings (perhaps the librarian will require the midi in to also be set to GR-55 and 'connected').
If anyone is 'in the know' on doing that, then you will know too collect the GR-55 midi data.

Gumtown,

We may have a bit of a hurdle posting user patches until your GR-55 patch editor is completed.

Reviewing all docs for the GR-55, I do not see any method for the user to perform the following important functions:

* Save a single GR-55 patch to USB, USB Stick,or MIDI sysex.

* Load a single GR-55 patch from USB, USB Stick,or MIDI sysex.

I only see references to Bulk Save to USB Stick,  and Bulk Load from USB stick. Meaning you can save / load your whole Library of User patches, but not individual patches.

I hope I'm wrong.

Or that you discover a hidden command in the " hope we get our hands on it soon" GR-55 MIDI Implementation Specification.

Geez, you guys don't waste time at all. This is awesome! Would it be too much trouble to ask to see a couple of screen grabs?

Why not go to the first post in this thread and re-read the 3 pages. Plenty of screen grabs there.

Better still download a copy of the beta and see all current screens it runs fine with no GR-55.

Thanks. It's looking great.  :)

I do have one suggestion/question. As I'm not familiar with the VG99 I can't comment on the overall tweakability of COSM guitars, but I had thought you could move pickups back and forth and so on, though I don;'t beieve the editing's as deep as Line 6's Workbench. Since one of my first goals will be to compare the on board GR-55's COSM guitars to my Variax, would it be possible to include a Line 6 Workbench-style editing feature in your editor for manipulating COSM guitars' various parameters?

With Roland COSM guitar system, the only guitar model you are allowed to move the pickups locations and swap PU types is the VARI Guitar Model. This model is only found on the VG-8, VG-8EX, VG-88, VG-99 / VB-99.

The GR-55 does not have this capability, since it lacks the COSM VARI Guitar model.

The GR-55 does have a new Strat with a pair of Humbuckers , the 03: H&H-ST model, which is not present on other systems.

Quotethanks for catching my error

Edited for accuracy. ;)

Having realised that most of the on/off buttons in the top two rows were duplicates of the on/off buttons on the 4 sound sources and of the the pedal foot-switches I decided to try a different design/style.

Please keep in mind it is a work in progress. :)
- the "Temp buffer" status would be, if technically possible, in the bottom status bar
- the "System settings" and "Connect" could still be buttons in the top row or new entries in the application menu top left of the window.
- the assign buttons would be in the style of the ones in v3 (the preceding photo), placed horizontally at the top.
- the copy paste buttons would be redesigned to match and stay at the bottom.
- the EQ sliders would change. ;)
