Boss GP-10 demo of "Re-Guitaring" (8in  / 8 out 24 bit Audio I/O)

The Boss GP-10  results in a unique device that can perform these functions :

1 )  Normal Guitar Processor : GR-55 can work as an FX Processor / Amp Modeler / Cab Simulator to Process your Guitar's Signal and feed a Powered PA Cab or Di Input on a live PA or Pro studio Line Input. It performs about the same ballpark as a Boss GT-100 or Line 6 POD in this regard.

2)  COSM Guitar Modeling -  GR-55 can work as an equivalent to a Line6 Variax / Roland VG-99  with multiple Guitar type emulations and DSP generated Alt Tunings on the fly to feed its internal  FX Processor / Amp Modeler / Cab Simulator to feed a Powered PA Cab or Di Input on a live PA or Pro studio Line Input.  The Latency is near zero, and the term "Tracking" is Irrelavant in this mode.

3) Guitar to MIDI -  Boss GP-10 can work as an equivalent to past GR-30, GR-55 types as a Guitar to MIDI interface to trigger external soft Synths on your PC/Mac.  The Latency varies depending on the played string, Lower pitched strings take longer time to process and "Tracking" must be optimized for users playing style.

Boss GP-10
Uploaded on Mar 16, 2014The new GP-10 puts a universe of amazing tones and tunings at your command, all in one compact processor that's affordable and easy to use. With a Roland GK-compatible pickup on your guitar, the GP-10 lets you transform your sound into numerous classic electric and acoustic guitar types, basses, and even analog-modeled synths, including the legendary Roland GR-300. Not stopping there, you have access to instant altered tunings, including popular open tunings, 12-string tones, and "down" tunings that are essential for today's ultra-heavy rock styles. The versatile GP-10 also functions as a full-featured multi-effects processor for both GK and normal pickups, giving you a huge selection of COSM amps and effects for live playing and studio recording. In addition, USB connectivity lets you capture GP-10 tones directly into your DAW, and you can even play computer-based soft synths from your axe with the GP-10's guitar-to-MIDI convertor!

COSM Instrument Modeling, Instant Altered Tunings, Multi-FX, and More
http://www.boss.info/global/articles/30021
Hamamatsu, Japan, March 11, 2014 - BOSS is pleased to introduce the GP-10 Guitar Processor, an instrument modeling and multi-effects unit that puts an immense range of sound possibilities into the hands of all guitarists. Driven by BOSS' acclaimed COSM technology, the GP-10 gives players access to various guitar, bass, and synth models, instant tuning changes, and a wide selection of world-class amps and effects, all in one compact and affordable device. In addition to stage performance, the GP-10 is a powerful partner for DAW music production, with unique multi-channel audio capabilities and guitar-to-MIDI conversion via USB.

GP-10 Guitar Processor Equipped with both a 13-pin GK input and a 1/4-inch guitar input, the GP-10 functions as an instrument modeling processor and a powerful multi-effects unit. The multi-effects section features COSM amps and effects derived from the flagship GT-100 Amp Effects Processor, and these can be used with any guitar via a standard 1/4-inch cable. The GK input provides access to both the instrument modeling and multi-effects sections, opening up a universe of sonic exploration for both live playing and studio recording.

When using a GK-compatible pickup with the GP-10, a guitarist can instantly change their instrument's entire sound and/or tuning with the press of a pedal. Powered by real-time DSP, the GP-10's modeled sounds are ultra-responsive and highly expressive. They can also be blended with the normal guitar sound, putting an infinite range of tones under the player's fingers.

Included are classic modeled electric guitars with single coils and humbuckers, as well as steel- and nylon-string acoustics, basses, banjo, resonator, fretless guitar, and even a sitar. The GP-10 also includes an analog-modeled synth engine that powers a super-fat OSC Synth and an emulation of the legendary Roland GR-300 guitar synth. In addition, the Poly FX section offers many unique sounds only possible with GK processing.

With any of the GP-10's modeled instrument sounds, the player is able to change their guitar's tuning at will, even in the middle of a song. Quick-access presets include many different open tunings, 12-string sounds, and "down" tunings popular with modern metal guitarists. Users can create their own custom tunings as well.

The GP-10 features an onboard USB audio/MIDI interface, letting players capture great amp and effect tones in their DAW with any guitar. But when using a GK pickup, the GP-10 expands production capabilities far beyond any standard guitar processor. For example, it's possible to record a guitar's six strings individually on separate tracks, either processed with the GP-10 or captured dry for later processing. Multi-string sound recording offers creative options not only for re-amping applications, but also for "re-guitaring" sounds through the GP-10's modeling section to change the entire sound while mixing. The guitar-to-MIDI function lets players to stretch their creativity even further by using their guitar to play soft synths, capture MIDI sequences, and input MIDI data into music notation software.

BOSS TONE STUDIO offers an inviting graphical interface for editing and organizing GP-10 patches on a computer via USB. Available as a free download for Mac and Windows, the software also provides an integrated connection to the BOSS TONE CENTRAL website, where users can preview and download patches created by top pro players directly into the GP-10.

The GP-10 is available by itself (GP-10S), or with an included Roland GK-3 Divided Pickup and 13-pin cable (GP-10GK). The GK-3 allows players to easily add GK compatibility to their favorite guitar with no modification necessary.

With its built-in GK pickup, Roland's popular GC-1 GK-Ready Stratocaster is ideal for use with the GP-10, and there are GK-compatible guitars available from many other manufacturers as well.

Incredible Versatility for Stage and Studio Playing
The compact GP-10 is both an instrument modeling processor and a powerful multi-effects unit. Its multieffects
section features flagship-level COSM amps and effects, and these can be used with any guitar via a
standard 1/4-inch cable. Plugging into the GP-10's GK input with a Roland GK-compatible pickup and a 13-pin
cable unlocks the instrument modeling section, opening up a world of amazing sonic possibilities for both live
playing and studio recording.

Instantly Change Your Guitar's Tuning
With a GK-compatible pickup, the GP-10 allows you to change your guitar's tuning with the press of a pedal.
There's no need to change instruments or manually retune for different songs or styles—just dial up the tuning
you need in the GP-10 and go. Play slide in open tunings like G and E, enjoy shimmering 12-string tones, or drop
your entire guitar down in semitone steps for massive, ultra-heavy riffs. There are many tuning presets to choose
from, and you can also create your own customized tunings for any application.

A World-Class Collection of Classic Guitars, Synths, and More
In addition to instant tuning changes, using a GK-compatible pickup with the GP-10 lets you change your instrument's entire sound as well. On hand are classic modeled electric guitars with single coils and humbuckers, plus steel- and nylon-string acoustics, basses, banjo, resonator, fretless guitar, and even a sitar! The GP-10 also includes an impressive analog-modeled synth engine that powers an authentic emulation of the famous Roland GR-300 analog guitar synth
and a super-fat OSC Synth with two oscillators and many easily adjustable sound parameters. In addition, a selection of cool "Poly FX" deliver unique sounds only possible with GK processing, allowing you to take your playing into exciting new territory. Modeled sounds can be blended with your guitar's normal sound, putting an infinite range of tones under your fingers.
Natural, Ultra-Responsive COSM Amps
A core factor that defines an electric guitar's sound is the amplifier type, and the GP-10 is filled with them.
30 different amps are at your disposal, including classic combos, vintage stacks, and modern high-gain amps, along with bass amps for modeled bass tones and a fullrange amp for acoustic sounds. Powered by custom BOSS DSP and the latest developments in COSM technology, the amps in the GP-10 deliver organic, responsive tone, with adjustable settings to vary the natural compression and playing feel. All the GP-10's amps can be used with either normal guitars or those equipped with a GK pickup.

High-Performance Multi-Effects
Inside the GP-10 is a wide selection of flagship effects derived from the GT-100. Most can be used with a normal guitar (without a GK pickup), allowing the GP-10 to do double-duty as an effects processor for any guitar gig. Included are overdrives, distortions, mod effects, delay, reverb, and more, as well as intelligent harmony and other great effects. The onboard expression pedal can be used for foot volume or effects such as wah, Pedal Bend, and others.

USB Audio/MIDI Interface Built In
The GP-10 features an onboard USB audio/MIDI interface, making it easy to record great amp and effect tones in
your favorite DAW with any axe. But when you use a GK equipped guitar, the GP-10 becomes an enormously
powerful creative tool that expands your production capabilities beyond any standard guitar processor. For
example, you can record the audio output of each of your guitar's strings on separate tracks, either processed
with the GP-10 or captured dry for later processing. When you record unprocessed sounds in this way, you have
the ability to not only re-amp the tracks through the GP-10's amps, but to "re-guitar" as well, using the GP-10's
instrument modeling to change the sound to anything you want after the fact! The guitar-to-MIDI function allows
you to stretch your creativity even further, using your guitar to play soft synths, capture MIDI sequences, and
input MIDI data into notation software on your computer.

BOSS TONE STUDIO and BOSS TONE CENTRAL
Available as a free download, the BOSS TONE STUDIO software makes it simple to edit and organize your GP-10 patches on your Mac or Windows computer. In addition, the software provides direct access via USB to the BOSS TONE CENTRAL website, which offers a continually growing collection of free, ready-to-play GP-10 patches created by some of the world's top guitarists.

GK Pickup Options for the GP-10
Depending on your needs, the GP-10 is available by itself (GP-10S), or with a Roland GK-3 Divided Pickup and 13-pin cable included in the box (GP-10GK). If you already have a GK-3 on your guitar—or if you have an instrument such as the GC-1 GK-Ready Stratocaster with a GK pickup built in—you'll want to choose the GP-10S. If you want to use the GP-10's modeling functions and you don't have a GK-3, the GP-10GK is the way to go. The GK-3 is quick and easy to install
on your favorite electric guitar with no modification needed.

I assume its due to the Boss GP-10 using  modern era A/D D/A converters with higher dynamic range, and faster DSPs - will not know until we open one up and have a peek inside.
<nitefly wrote>
I talked to the Roland guy at Musikmesse earlier today and he explained the the DSP is about six times faster as on the VG99. One can assume that the other chips used may have better audio quality compared to the VG99 which was introduced 7 years ago.

I heard the demo of Gundy Keller and was able to play the GP10 myself. Ido own VG88 and VG99 and my first impression was, that the sound quality has improved a lot, i.e. distorted sounds, and had a lot more punch. Overtone harmonics were easy to get.

It will be really interesting to hear more about the functionality available with this unit.  In particular, I'm curious to find out if it allows for seamless patch changes, flexible routing of effects before/after/and in between amps and cabinets, and the number of assignments that will be available in each patch (I'm assuming that they will take a similar approach with assignments as in their other GK units).  I like the seemingly small footprint, so hopefully it doesn't fall short on functionality.

I'm a little disappointed that there's no regular midi input, as that would make it a lot easier to integrate into a rig that doesn't include a PC or iOS component.  Usb midi seems to be the way that manufacturers are trending.  I guess if the effects routing options are comprehensive and flexible enough, I could live without it.

I've seen some websites already posting this with a price of $399.  I'll reserve judgement until we see how many untold features are included.  I'm definitely excited to see that Roland is not abandoning the 13 pin world, and is developing more practical solutions than last year's GR-S/GR-D.

When you say cut down it looks like they pretty much cut it in half - a VG-9!

Can you imagine editing on that thing?

Aaaaand also introducing the GT001 - a desktop based GT100 for plugging into your DAW.

Just seen the Roland advert for the new GP-10. As I tend to use my GR-55 mainly for the COSM tones I'm wondering if the GP-10 is a better way to go. The Roland blurb says it has an input for a standard guitar as well. That would save having to mod my GR-55. Wonder when they will be available over here in the UK to try out.

Looks more like a third of a GR-55 to me. They removed the PCM tones, the looper, the USB stick playback, and the nice display, and added the 1/4" input/effects loop.

Basically, everything I wanted out of the GR-55! I just don't like the MIDI/PCM stuff in the GR-55 (personal preference, I just prefer the FTP), but I really did like the COSM guitar/bass/acoustic stuff. This is really cool, and I'm quite excited about getting one.

Personally, I wish Roland would go even further in streamlining this product, and offer a pedal with nothing but the COSM instrument modeling and alternate tuning features, in a simple stomp or double-stomp format.  No expression pedal (an input jack for an optional Exp. Pedal would be good), maybe a COSM/mag footswitch and alt tuning on/off switch.  Knobs for preset selection, levels, tunings... keep the rest of the editing offline on Mac, PC or tablet.  Something relatively inexpensive that you could put on a pedalboard or pair with your favorite amp.  This is a step in the right direction, but it's still a pretty big footprint, and I'm not that crazy for the GR effects.

This middle ground is an improvement, but with a box that big I'd have preferred if they kept the PCM intact.  The looper is good riddance IMO, as are most of the buttons that I've never touched since I bought my GR55.

myksara

They have removed the USB stick slot but given an AUX In which is even better probably so that you don't have to convert your backing tracks to WAV and load. Just hook in your mobile/mp3 player and play the mp3s on it.

The guitar to MIDI kind of replaces the PCM tones which could be good if it can trigger soft-synths on PC (which they say i does) and Ipad.
Latency is something that would be worth checking. If it can get as close to FTP, then it would be interesting.
USB to MIDI means you would have to carry your laptop/ipad with your favorite soft-synths which is nice for flexibility and not having to stick to the units predefined PCMs but with the disadvantage of having to carry an additional gadget (laptop/ipad)

I would not miss the looper either.

So looks interesting to me at the moment. It will take a while for the unit to get to India so I would depend on the US/UK gurus here to unveil the power/shortcomings of this gadget after using it

Well it's definitely got separate string output.

I'm pretty excited about this as a compact alternative to taking out my rack mounted VG-99/Mac Mini.

Price seems fairly reasonable too.  UK retailers seem to be putting it at £319 without GK, £415 with.  Gear4Music also has an expected delivery date of March 19th, but - knowing Roland - I wouldn't bet on which year! :p

I could go for that, too. Maybe the Antares pedal? I'm underwhelmed with what Roland has done since the VG-99, but I could still see getting one of these since I use my Kemper for amp & effects when I want my best tone anyway.

The big difference is the lack of PCM synth sounds.
I don't use those much, myself--mainly just the guitar and effect models.  If the cosm models are enhanced, it would definitely be worth a look.

It does state re-amp and re-guitar. The second option would suggest poly string out and in. That would make it an amazingly flexible unit in combination with a laptop or Macbook.
