Don't know if this has been discussed before, but wanted to put out this solution just in case it might be useful to someone.

Using small footprint Intel NUC (mine is dual core 2.4 ghz, 4 gig ram, nuc dn2820fykh)
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/nuc/nuc-board-dn2820fykh.html

and USB to 5 pin MIDI interface to route to external Synth Module (5 pin midi to USB interface not needed if your synth module has usb midi i/o such as the Waldorf Blofeld).

** Reaper Method (unreliable as drivers fail to load in Reaper occasionally)

1) Setup track in Reaper DAW to route GP-10 to hardware synth output.  Save project (when Reaper automatically opens, this last project saved will open).

2)  To automatically open Reaper, make shortcut of Reaper .exe file.  Place in startup folder.

3)  Disable require password at startup in Windows.

Now everything is automated--no need for keyboard or monitor, just turn on GP-10, hit the power button on the NUC or portable PC and wait a couple minutes for everything to power up.

** Midi-ox Method (highly reliable)

From Tascam forum: http://tascamforums.co/index.php?showtopic=16109

----------------------

1. Make all your Port settings, control maps, etc. in MIDI-OX.
2. Go to File>Save Profile... and save your settings with a useful name. Close MIDI-OX.
3. Go to the MIDI-OX directory.
4. Right-click on MIDIOX.EXE and create a shortcut.
5. Rename the shortcut to something useful, like "MIDI-OX Instance 1"
6. Right-click on the shortcut and go to Properties
7. On the Shortcut tab, go to the Target field.
8. Add a space after the path to MIDI-OX, and enter the path to the profile .ini file you saved in #2 in quotations: "D:\path\profile.ini"
10. The Target field should now look like this:

"C:\Program Files\MIDIOX\Midiox.exe" "D:\path\profile.ini"

11. Change the Run field to "Minimized"
12. Click on OK.

--------------------------

Place shortcut in startup folder and that's it.

Thanks for posting

I was considering doing the same with that new $100 "Kangaroo PC"  - but my car was broken into and some thief stole my kangaroo! ;(

yes -Kangoroo PC looked perfect - too bad it was stolen before I could power it up and test it

I'll probably order another - or wait for the inevitable "faster Kangoroo II" in 6 months"

Meanwhile an old 2007 HP Mini210 Netbook with WinXP works fine too.
(Luckily Roland / Boss has a GP-10 USB driver for WinXP)
