Title: GT-10 Exp Switch Trouble
Post by: Guitardan on September 20, 2017, 06:18:54 AM
I picked up a used GT-10 and I've discovered that the Exp Switch doesn't function as expected.
The setting I'd like to use is to turn the Wah on/off. But the switch will not engage the FX.
I did a factory reset and I've run through the calibration and set the threshold to the lowest setting and I still have to stand on the toe to get it to come on. Then sometimes it won't stay on.
Is there a setting in the System menu that would cause this?
I've tried setting it up in the CTL/EXP Functions following the manual.
FV = Wah/FV
Exp Sw = Pdl FX
Could the switch itself be bad?

Thanks!

Avoid using the  GT-10 on padded carpeting

place a wood board under it, and re-calibrate the expression pedal  - - details in the manual

I'll give it a try....The first time I did the cal on my work bench.
I've done this on my old GT 8 and it worked fine.
The GT-10 threshold is set to 1 so I should be able to engage by hand.

I would

1 ) Save any User patches

2 ) Perform a factory reset

3 ) Recalibrate your Expression pedal in the actual typical GT-10 playing environment

Welp, I went back through the same process of Exp calibration and the result was the same.
I pretty much have to stand on the Exp Sw to get it to engage. (all 185 lbs of me). (this was on my basement cement floor).
My guess is that the switch is darn near dead.

I've already contacted Boss / Roland support and they don't sell any internal parts and suggest I take it to a service center.

I suppose at this point, I can assign a CTL pedal to kick on the Wah. ( I don't use it a whole lot anyway ).

Thanks for the suggestions....

On Roland  / Boss gear with onboard Expression pedals - there is no "Toe switch" - instead its merely a rubber pad under the toe treadle area which compresses under foot pressure to engage the  last range of the internal pedal pot

90% of folks who suffer what you experience  - "the toe switch does not engage", is a result of using the GT-10 on a padded carpeted floor, or a compromised rubber toe pad under the expression pedal toe area.

if you are using GT-10 on a concrete floor, inspect the GT-10 expression pedal and verify your "toe rubber pad" under the expression pedal remains intact., and re- calibrate the pedal again

or stated another way

QuoteThe EXP pedal switch is an extension to the EXP pedal range, with a rubber block under the pedal which gets compressed to move the EXP pedal into the Switch range.

The EXP pedal calibration must be done to suit YOUR playing, it should be done with the processor on the floor and use your foot, and adjust the threshold to suit the required pedal pressure.

Next check the SYSTEM/Global pedal settings, the pedals should be set to "Patch" to have different assigned functions for different patches, otherwise the pedal will perform the set function and nothing else.

This is good to know....thanks  :)

I'll have to make sure the pedals are set to Patch mode and re-try.

Here's something I did notice while operating the volume pedal:
When I move it all the way back (off), there is a short delay / lag in the volume going all the way to zero.
Like wise, when I move it all the way forward, there is a lag in getting to 100% volume.
This can be seen on the display and heard.

Is there analog pot or an encoder inside that operates the Vol / Wah?

Thx

Expression pedal Lag exists - and is highest when GT10 is connected to a computer via USB

I found the culprit.  ;D
While testing the calibration again, I found that the wah would engage but not stay engaged.

I was in the Patch mode, and while checking the other settings in the play menu, I found that Exp Pedal Hold was 'On'.
I turned it off, and much to my surprise, the wah now stayed on when the Exp Sw is pressed and functions like it should.

When I look at that parameter in the manual, it sure doesn't sound like that's what it controls.
And it baffles me why this would be a default setting after doing a system reset which I did on the very first day I got it.

Anyway, thanks for all your input and help.

Peace !
