* Use the VG-99's V-Link for triggering VJ Video gear by playing specific strings on the VG-99.

V-Link essentially enables a dedicated MIDI output channel (via 5pin DIN MIDI OUT) which a separate Video application or VJ hardware (via MIDI) - responds with visuals that are pre-mapped to respond to specific notes you play

To learn more about V-Link - Watch these video - shows how other Roland gear with V-LINK integrates into Motion Dive - Tokyo - a VJ-hardware/ software solution.

I almost bought this Motion Dive - Tokyo as a VG-99 add-on, for live performance - but I understand a program called " Union' is a better / more capable VJ system:

REPLACED BY CELL DNA
http://www.lividinstruments.com/software_cell.php

CellDNA is designed for realtime performance of video, images, and sounds. The intuitive, easy to learn interface gets you quickly mixing video, images, and sound. Live video input, realtime recording, an advanced database for tagging, organizing, and finding clips, network control, and integration with Ableton Live makes CellDNA one of the most advanced and flexible video tools in your kit. Extensive MIDI learn, and templates for all of Livid's Controllers as well as a growing library of other controllers (including the Akai APC40 and APC20) allows you to use any MIDI controller for expressive hands-on performance of real-time video. Extensible with Cycling74's Max software, the possibilities are endless.

CellDNA builds on the standard Cell interface for video designers looking to alter and composite images in realtime. With dozens built-in effects and free-frame compatibility, you can mix up your videos with radical warpings, keying, feedback, tints, and captions. CellDNA is the easiest VJ software to learn and get started with, yet provides massive mixing potential.

Real-Time Effects
Add and manipulate real-time effects with your videos or camera input. Use the Open Source FreeFrame effects to extend your effects library. You can even customize and edit the effects using Cycling74's Max software. The SDK provides examples and testing patches so you can develop your own Effects and Extras for CellDNA. The BPM series of effects make automation as simple as turning a knob, just like any other effect. Use BPM to change clips, Clip Banks, Effects, and more.

MIDI Control
Completely control your performance with any MIDI controller. CellDNA automatically maps to the Livid OhmRGB, Ohm64, Code, and block controllers as well as the Akai APC40 and APC20 for easy plug-and-plug VJ performance. Templates can be edited, and you can even make your own for your own controller. Comprehensive MIDI Learn makes it possible to integrate up to five different MIDI controllers to control virtually every aspect of CellDNA.

Networking
Use a local or wide area network to control multiple computers running CellDNA at the same time. Use any program that can create a UDP message (Max/MSP, pd, Processing, Python, and PHP just to name a few) to remotely control CellDNA over a local network, wireless network, or even from another country.

Database
An industry-standard SQLite database can be used to keep track of your media collection. You can tag and comment on clips on your hard drives, either individually or whole folders of clips. You can then search the database for filenames, comments, and tags, and instantly load the results into the ClipGrid. As you grow the database, you'll be able to instantly find the clips you need when you need them.

Layers and Masks
The simple introduction of CellDNA lets you easily and instantly mix two channels of video (A and B), but you can add 2 more videos on top of each channel for a sophisticated, layered look, composited in a number of different ways. Masks can be loaded as still images to fit a special shape of projection surface, or videos, to animate and provide a dynamic mask. You can even apply the SoundWave image from an audio input as a mask!

Recording
Realtime or rendered - it's your choice. Need to quickly knock out some ideas for an ad or music video? Make a real time mix to the track, record it and share the ideas with your clients.

Need to generate some new clips for your project to drop into an editor or VJ set? Use render mode to make sure clips come out nice and smooth. Even if you aren't a VJ or CellDNA isn't your primary live video software, the production capabilities make it an essential part of your rig.

Max for Live Devices
Completely control your visuals from Ableton Live with our free Max for Live devices designed for CellDNA. You can use Live to score video clips, automate effects, integrate controllers, or trigger CellDNA clips and creatively apply effects using audio from individual Live Tracks or the master output.

Captions
Realtime control of captions and titles means you can communicate directly with your audience. Let them know who's playing, what the lyrics are, or maybe even order a drink from the bar! Load in a text file of lyrics, and use the next line feature to advance through the file. Or get creative and load in graphic fonts and use the 3D animation to add another visual element to the mix.

Mutli-screen
CellDNA's multi-screen interface allow for multi-screen control using devices like the Matrox's DualHead2Go and TripleHead2Go. The "split" button allows for immediate access to two screen presentation, or you can use the MultiScreen Extra for up to 4 screens.

Syphon Support
Integrated Syphon client and server support lets you share the frames of CellDNA with other video applications for projection mapping or additional processing, or vice versa.

Extensible with Cycling74's Max
Because CellDNA is built in Max, special care has gone into allowing users to add their own Effects and Extras. Comprehensive examples and documentation are in the SDK to help you make your own additions. You can view all the source of the existing Effects, edit them, make your own, or get rid of ones you don't like. By making your own Extras, you can create your own specialize control interfaces, integrate computer vision (camera-as-controller), make graphics generators to mix in with video, or even integrate Twitter feeds!

That is truly amazing!!!!! I've seen the Motion Dive .Tokyo before but having watched all of the demos and so forth, I must have this. The MD-P1-S is only $299 at MusiciansFriend. I've got to get it. I've got a projector laying around so this is going to be part of the live show for sure. To be able to use the VG-99 to control it is amazing. Seriously, thanks for the info guys.

Hi Chip -

I am in the same place.  The MD-P1-S may be the next item on my shopping list.  I use a cheap "auto vj" software now (see my rig below) but V-Link seems to be a huge step forward.
My Rig: Brian Moore i2.13 > Guitar Rig 4 and Roland GR-09 > Ableton Live 8 Suite > Alesis  MasterControl > Little Dot 1+ > Allesandro MS-1 Headphones > My Head > My Soul

Slackjaw

I am in the process of researching visual solutions.  One of the things I like about the free/cheap, and perhaps the only thing, is that it sort of does things automatically based on audio input.  From transitions to effects cycling and that sort of thing.  I am looking mostly at Union as well as what seems to be the related lightweight Cell.  I'm thinking for these performances I can use my GK controls to manipulate the video presentation.  Could be extremely cool.

Its all on my things to do list too.

Motion Dives pop up on ebay for $175.  The "best" tools for VJ gear change every 3 months - a lot of new emerging technology is happening in the VJ sector, and the VG-99, and Edirol PCR-30 Keyboards have V-Link controls built in. Re read the V-Link section of the VG-99 Owners Manual. Could Assign the 6 rotary controllers on the VG-99 to manipulate Visual FX. Its built in!

Also realize we are NOT locked into using only Motion Dive, or Edirol gear - but a wide assortment of VJ tools.

Hey Elantric,
I appreciate the info. I'll check it out. Odd that the Edirol software would be stale considering all of the 'bleeding edge' talk in their literature. Hmmm.

Its been around in Japan since 1998

The software is NOT Roland's - its made by "Digital Stage" a Japanese software firm

http://www.digitalstage.net/en/

The newer japanese only stuff is here:

http://www.digitalstage.jp/store/mdt/index.html#complete

Roland just has the small "VJ" joystick box built in China - which is basically a bit crippled as it has only USB and one MIDI Input - No MIDI Output - then bundles it with a 2004 era version of the Motion Dive software,

Could do better with a Behringer BCR-2000 and CellDNA - running on a dedicated Laptop.

You can purchase third Party Loops which run on several VJ Applications here:

Or build your own with final cut pro and Mac

any of you guys buy the motion dive or similar product and be able to control them with the VG-99? This seems a bit too good to be true, especially how affordable it seems to be. I'm new to the VG-99 having sold my TC-G-system in hopes to lighten up my load to gigs. So far so good, just waiting on my FC-300 to arrive.

No, I didn't. But I can/do use the VG-99 to control visuals using Jitter, Union and Modul8.  So far I prefer to use other controllers to deal with my video, but I have connected MIDI note out of the VG-99 and used that to select various video clips, velocity controls their speed, etc.  Works fine.

Has anyone used the VG=99 to control DMX lighting? I have a behringer light controller and several DMX PARs and DJ FX lights.

Rhcole

It's the great no-feature feature on both the VG and GR for me. Anybody use this for something? Can you get it to turn on a coffee pot in the morning or something?

Elantric

Here are Roland Products which "speak"the Roland V-Link protocol for triggering videos during live performance with your VG-99 / GR-55
QuoteQ.What is the V-Link function?
A.V-Link gives effects to video synchronously with music.  Usually, various settings are required to control V-4 operation from a MIDI device such as sequencer or MIDI keyboard.  When a V-Link-enabled Roland or EDIROL device is connected to V-4, powering this device on automatically performs necessary MIDI settings.

Pretty sure blink is just midi messages and roland vlink stuff just means the controls are preset..
If the p10 or any device accepts midi then it should potentially work in some way..
Just a matter of getting the midi stuff setup properly. ...

I just bought a P-10 today that has v link. I hope to be able to trigger it via a sonuus analogue 1/4  to midi converter? Possibly electronic pads via a roland td10 or midi pedal? I only play the gr55 on a few songs and do not want to be stuck playing the guitar that has the gk3 but be able to use a regular guitar or other way to at least trigger video clips without the gr55 v link feature. Any thoughts on this?

gumtown

VLink is transported over midi, but is not midi protocol itself,
It is a proprietry Roland command protocol used for video scene selection.
You will need to use either a V-Link supported Video product,
or a midi 'translation' device that can receive VLink protocol and convert it to either midi notes or cc#, or VLink to DMX.
Free "GR-55 FloorBoard" editor software from https://sourceforge.net/projects/grfloorboard/

I have dmxis and may go the show buddy route for sequencing to the Roland p-10 in one band but the other band does not sequence so the Roland p-10 I just bought will be the slave to the gr55 for only a few songs where I play guitar synth unless you can also trigger the p-10 with the gr55 guitar type input signal only? I am using a Joness filter buffer 13 pin input for myself and the filter buffer 1/4 input for the other guitarist. The filter buffer has the 13 pin output to the gr55. Can The other guitarist utilize the v-link even if the only input signal from him is a regular guitar signal into the filter buffers 1/4 input then into the gr55 via 13pin?

No

V-Link will only be triggered by the 13 pin input
Read start of this thread for links to all V-Link details.

and read GR-55 OM page 59

Gumtown,
Sorry but I think you will find it IS MIDI... All composed of standard MIDI messages and sysex setup
No translation is necessary to get notes or cc's, notes select clips, cc's are standardised
It's like GM defining certain controllers to certain fx but in terms of lighting
See the other info here re how it is setup. It is MIDI . . .

So it would be possible for a program like show buddy to midi trigger my Roland P-10 for video clip playback?

If it can send midi notes and CCs then yes

I ran into an 'as new' Edirol Motion Dive .Tokyo package (the MD-P1 controller & the MD software).

I realize this package is pretty obsolete now, but the hardware console looks decent.

Anybody else had a try at installing this these days ? (on a Win XP, later won't work)

Support from digitalstage is gone, BUT you need a pesky 4-digit code to add to the supplied 11-digit code for the software to run.

Any ideas/related experiences ?

Thanks/regards

Elantric
