GR-55 FloorBoard Editor Help

Download the software from here

O.K. The GR-55 FloorBoard editor software project has now started....
I have uploaded a teaser, it still looks a lot like the GT-10 editor, but until i can get the GR-55 midi specification documents or an actual GR-55, it's going to be guess work..

https://sourceforge.net/projects/grfloorboard/

this is only a preview, there is still a long way to go yet. At a latter stage, Mac OsX and Linux versions will also be uploaded..

Latter Edit: The editor is fully developed and functional, with downloads for windows, mac, Linux.

GR-55 Librarian and USB drivers are now in the download section..
http://www.roland.com/products/en/_support/dld.cfm?PRODUCT=GR%2D55

this will give me a start on working out the file formats, from looking at the bits & bytes in a saved patch file..

The editor i propose to do will be opensource (source code available to public domain) and totally free, i will not charge for it, but maybe with the hope i can either get hold of a freebie GR-55, or campain for donations as i build the software.
Being in New Zealand, we are last on the supply list, so one won't be available for at least 6 months, i may have to take my chances on saving and importing one from the U.S.
Since developing the editor's for the Boss GT range, i now have a good working template to start on the new "GR-55_FloorBoard" editor.

Here is a link to the GT FxFloorBoard website
https://fxfloorboard.sourceforge.net/

and here is a link to the source code section
https://sourceforge.net/projects/fxfloorboard/

The GR-55 parameter changes should respond to system exclusive data, the same as other Boss/Roland midi equipment.

Here is a link for any donation to help getting a GR-55 Editor under way
(need GR-55 to build software as well as Roland midi implimentation document)
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=YTT3NR4L7TTX8

I will start getting the source code and download site setup, i will make regular updates of preview versions so all can comment and see how progress is going.
I have already disected a GR-55 *SMF export patch, and converted it to system exclusive format, where i now see the address structure of the GR-55.
The editor will run on 3 platforms Windows Xp~7, mac Osx 32 & 64 bit and Linux 32 & 64 bit versions.
Note for the Linux version, a USB driver will need to be developed too, but the editor will also run with a standard midi device adapter too.

I will be putting so faith in the assumption that the USB/midi structure will follow the path of thier previous products..=============
Background:

I am totally keen on the GR-55, now i can sell my GT-10, GT10B and GR-20 and get one of these,
it is just as i had wished for.
Some of you may know me from building the free and opensource FxFloorBoard range of software editors for the Boss GT range
http://fxfloorboard.sourceforge.net/
and also from the Boss GT Central Forum
Now only if i could get a hold of the GR-55 midi specification, and a discounted GR-55, i would be happy to make editing software for the GR-55, hopefully with editing features far more advanced than the VG-99 editor..

If Roland don't produce editing software, then it is guarenteed that i will do the software (provided Roland will release the detailed midi spec documents).

Edit: BTW this is the Windows version, just click on the link above, and then click on the GR-55FloorBoard_Setup.exe file.
Some web browsers may require to allow download permission on the top explorer bar before download can begin...

Latter Edit: Don't be worried by the look at the moment, it is being ported from the GT-10 version, so the appearance is not yet done.
I will post a message here when the editor is at a stage where the layout is done for review..

First update uploaded for comment.
It's very unfinished, but i thought i would show the general concept of the signal flow, and an idea of where i am going.
i have yet to do a structure change graphical representation, and much stuff is incomplete without the midi specification docs as of yet (but very soon i hope).
At this stage it could quite possibly load in patches from the GR-55 (theoreticaly), most of the midi I/O structure is done.

I have decided to stay with the same file format as the GR-55 Librarian (*.g5l) for three reasons,
as this format was three main advantages over SMF or system exclusive formats.
1: ) the (*.g5l) format allows for patch text dialog to be contained in each patch file, useful for patch sharing and knowing what uses the file is for.
2: ) the (*.g5l) format does not contain patch address location data, so a patch can be loaded into any user patch location on the GR-55, where as SMF types tend to be limited to reloading back to the same address they were saved from, and can over write patches without warning if loaded from a sequencer or player.
3: ) this is the same format the librarian uses, so patch files will be fully compatible with both GR-55 FloorBoard and the  GR-55 Librarian.

It will still export SMF and SYX formats also..

the project now has it's own dedicated site

https://sourceforge.net/projects/grfloorboard/

but have been experiancing download problems of newly uploaded updates, most likely due to the files need time to distribute around the globe to regional download servers, so if a download stalls,  try again the next day, or select a different download server option.

Can't really comment on the update, I've got my hands full at the moment, but thanks for keeping us updated. ;)

I can say I've had d/l problems from Australia over the last two days - seems to grab about the first 150-250kb of the file, the FF says it's complete. I'll try again in a few days.

Cheers

Same here, in the UK.  :-\

Hi,

I have downloaded it different times but the result is always the same:

I get a Installer integrity check has failed.....etc error message.

As far as I can see the downloads were all successful.

I'm on Vista

I got a reply back from the SourceForge site hosts, and they are still resolving some problems, so it could take some time still until the files are available for download.
The windows file size of the download should be about 7.2Mb, i have noticed that the downloads either freeze 200Kb into the download or appears to download in one second and is too small/broken (depending on if you use I.E. or F.F.).
This event is quite annoying and is beyond my control, but i hope that all is normal soon.
I will continue with development anyway, i am liking the graphical routing of the four sound sources, while trying to keep a 'simplistic' appearance.
I had a quick look at the VG-99 editor to other day, and my first impression of that was the cluttered and confusing layout, this is what i want to avoid with GR-55FloorBoard.

I managed to download the file in the US, and it installed on my PC.

Cheers to Colin!

The download finally worked.

From a visual point of view I wonder if it could be better to reduce
the size of the pedals smaller.

To remain consistent with the OM I would use MFX instead FX-2

Good stuff

Mario

ddlooping

Got it too. :)

It's very much a work-in-progress, Mario, I'm pretty sure gumtown intends to match the labels. ;)

P.S: I personnaly intend to tweak the interface and then submitted to gumtown. :)

Finished tweaking for tonight...

I'm trying to use as many visual cues from the actual GR-55 as possible (i.e, the background is the metallized blue finish of the GR-55, brushed aluminium from the screen area, GR-55 potentimeters knobs, menu in black with pale blue text, rubber buttons...).

Still a lot to do, obviously, but I'll wait for gumtown approval. :)

The image can be opened full-scale by right-clicking it and chosing "Open image xxx". ;)

Version 2, slightly higher to give more space to the elements...

I've made some room on the right and will try and move the "Copy/Paste" buttons there.
That would enable me to give more space to the top buttons, inputs and pedals. :)

I also intend to change the style of the "pipes" (signal flow) to be more in keeping with the GR-55 design.

Nice job. Even I can see the second one. lol

Spider

I'm not sure it would be possible to controll for example Reverb On/Off or Reverb level via CC (no SysEx) using MIDI input in the GR55. If no, maybe the Editor could have a MIDI Learn function?

Elantric

These can all be mapped to a user assignable MIDi CC# number

read the GR-55 Owners manual

You right:) So it's he same like in GT10... I can assign CC from an external controller like moded FCB 1010 or Kore 2 Controller. Very nice:) no problem with expression pedals or foot switches.

ddlooping

Another two unfinished versions...

I personally prefer the last one. :)
It should also have any space to insert the missing bits.

One thing to concider is the minimum screen resolution, i am trying to keep it usable for those with laptops or low res monitors.
The absolute minimum  resolution with the side panel closed will need to be 1024, and with the side panel open, 1280 X 768.
Also a bit concerned on using trade-marked names and decals without permission from Roland. (i.e. Roland name and GR decal).

I think it's best if I leave you to it and wait for the editor to be out of alpha stage.
I'll then have a much better idea of what goes where. :)

P.S: the "GR" and "Roland" don't have to be there.
It might be worth asking Roland Corp. if they'd be ok with it though.
After all, a fully working editor for the GR-55 can only be a good thing for them.
@Elantric: is it something you could do?

I suspect if the project is to remain open source, we must omit using real names.
