Grrrrr.  I know that the Variax itself will function only with Line 6 branded batteries, but does anyone know if Line 6 batteries can be charged in a generic charger?  I'm afraid to ask what they get for replacement chargers.

The Variax Battery is similar to the Sony NP-F570 camera battery. - and these Sony NP-F570 chargers are reported to work with JTV Variax Battery

Yes, $49 is about what I expected...  I ordered one of these:

The Line 6 charger has no pin for the digital security contact on the battery, so I'm sure the generic charger will be ok.

Just know the two Sony clone batteries included with that kit will not function in the JTV Variax

Yes, I know those batteries won't work without modification of the guitar.  When I reach the point where my Line 6 batteries no longer hold a charge, I plan to modify the JTV by tying the battery holder (+) pin to the +7 line through a blocking diode (can be picked up at the ring connection of the 1/4" jack).  If it will run on +7 from the 1/4" cable it will run on +7 from a vanilla camcorder battery.   They may have the digital protection scheme wired in quite deeply, but my approach should be a valid workaround.
