Is there anyone here that might know if you can control patch changes on a Katana 100 from a GR55 using just a USB "B" male to male cable ? I have seen a few ways via standard 5pin midi cables & a interface box, but it strikes me that a simple one cable connection would be best.......As easy as it is to use the Roland FC, it would be great to patch change both with one press of a switch and one less piece of gear on the floor .....Thanks in advance  :)

There are no USB B to USB B cables. USB works with a host and a client. Both the GR55 and the Katana are a client. Without a USB host it will not work.

I assume you can access patches 1-3 via MIDI using the corresponding buttons on the GR? That would actually be enough guitar tones for me as I stay on one guitar sound 95% of the night.

You must use a USB Host to MIDI I/O hardware adapter to accomplish your goals
(PrimovaSound MIDX-20, Raspberry Pi)

Also the Katana has a very limited MIDi implementation - only supports 5 MIDI Patch numbers

Thank you all for the replies .......Some good information.
What provoked my question was seeing this cable, http://www.jebcable.com/prod-46.html and as I'm not up to speed as to how the USB system works my main concern was that there would be a problem with the 5v/500ma supply using this cable & end up damaging both the Katana & Gr55 USB ports.....and secondly would it pass data. I have looked into some of the midi interfaces that will do the job and the choices now are really down to convenience over price, The Roland FC being about €100 & a Midi interface that can be housed in the Katana €200.
Maybe a bit more investigation is needed .....Thanks again

Don't do it!  There are a lot more factors in play beyond the connector gender.  At best, it will not work.  At worst you may damage something.  The only way you'll ever get the GR-55 to talk to the Katana is by connecting both to a computer that recognizes them as MIDI devices and arrange to route traffic from the GR to the Katana.  Simplest approach is to use a credit card sized computer (e.g. RaspberryPi or Beaglebone) running Linux.  Linux will automatically recognize both as MIDI devices. You can then use 'aconnect' to route between them.

Ive never understood why a company would sell a cable like this

Its only suitable for a hardware engineer performing USB debugging

Why cant i just use a MIDI Foot controller with a USB connection?

Because all MIDI foot controllers with USB connection I know ( as well as the Boss GP-10, Fishman Tripleplay, Line6 FBV Shortboard MKII are:
USB Client (EndPoint) devices

The USB Bus requires One device to act as USB HOST Device - and those are typically computers
http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/49140/what-exactly-are-the-difference-between-a-usb-host-and-device

The USB Host port initiates all communication on the USB bus, the USB Endpoint device only responds when asked by the USB Host. For Details see the specs on usb.org.
http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/devclass_docs/

(And tell anyone you know (Marketing Manager's, etc) to study the USB Specification before they vote to omit the 5pin DIN MIDI I/O jacks from new gear just to save $2.00 cost.
