I attended the Fishman  / East West Triplplay event in Hollywood on Dec 20, 2016. It took place at 6000 Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, CA - this same building is "hallowed ground" to me - as it was formerly known as Bill Putnam's United Western Recorders  / then Ocean Way Recording and now EastWest Studios
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Western_Recorders
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EastWest_Studios
http://www.eastweststudio.com/index.php
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Audio#United_Recording_Corp.
This same address has roots going back to Bing Crosby's weekly radio show and birth of multitrack recording
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=17219.msg123244#msg123244
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bing_Crosby
QuoteCrosby had launched the tape recorder revolution in America. In his 1950 film Mr. Music, Crosby is seen singing into one of the new Ampex tape recorders that reproduced his voice better than anything else. Also quick to adopt tape recording was his friend Bob Hope. He gave one of the first Ampex Model 200 recorders to his friend, musician Les Paul, which led directly to Paul's invention of multitrack recording. His organization, the Crosby Research Foundation, also held various tape recording patents and developed equipment and recording techniques such as the laugh track that are still in use today.[59]
Along with Frank Sinatra, Crosby was also one of the principal backers behind the famous United Western Recorders recording studio complex in Los Angeles.[60]

East-West has been creating magnificent sample libraries for composers  around the globe -
http://www.soundsonline.com

On demonstration at the event was Jennifer Batten with her Washburn JB-100 Guitar which has had the Fishman Tripleplay installed  with Firmware 1.4  and its USB adapter into the Fishman FC-1 floor controller which was connected via USB to a recent MacPro ( the black cylinder, 64GB RAM) , that hosted the initial prerelease version of the new Fishman  / East-West sample library pack with latest Tripleplay control GUI interface.

What is new and unique is these new East-West sound libraries for Tripleplay have painstakingly been optimized to support the Fishman Tripleplay in either Poly or Mono mode ,  so they each can support string bending with separate MIDi channel per string, with high optimization for performance

The performance was breathtaking  - the orchestral sounds were genuine, and the tracking was flawless, most notable was the improved lower latency on the lower strings. Its true the computer type you use makes a difference in shaving off the last few milliseconds, and none is better nor faster in this regard than a 2016 MacPro
http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/

(Jennifer Batten stated she has been using her Macbook Air with excellent results)

Look for an official East/West release in 2017.

I'm due to upgrade to the latest FTP firmware next week

But there are reports the latest  firmware 1.4 version when installed on all Fishman Triplplay hardware ( External models and internal models -  Fender Fishman Strat, Godin & Rob OReilly Tripleplay), the resulting latency is now lower and thus the idea of performing a  genuine latency test of FTP with FW1.4 to verify the lower latency seems appropriate

Elantric, thanks for the review... Do you know if East-West has any Rock Saxes in there software.... Thanks Paul

This was brief pic of the attendees of the Fishman Tripleplay  - East-West event in Hollywood Dec 20, 2016

In the doorway in the baseball cap is Andy Summers

On far right (seated) is Jeff Skunk Baxter,

and we had a great conversation before the main event,  comparing our shared experiences  / history with Mil-Aero strategies, NASA, JPL, Los Alamos labs.

Also present (but not in above pic) : Steve Conrad (Elantric)(me),  Thomas Nordegg (Steve Vai tech), Jennifer Batten

and a Apple MacPro with 12 cores and 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD drives

None were demonstrated, however i'm sure there will be one included in one of the East-West Tripleplay  library releases in near future

When is this to be released? "Announcing" a product without a ship/availability date is low rent. We NEED IT bad...and WANT IT worse. :)

Yet very typical for many cutting edge M.I.  products, its part of a long tradition in these circles

But I expect this will ship before "Virtual Jeff"

Then the Tripleplay with optional FC-1 driving a hardware synth via 5 pin MIDI is perhaps what you seek

Yes, I have an FC-1. I picked up an old Roland JV-1010, and am able to get some sounds out of it. However, the quality isn't very good, and it's VERY complicated to set up. I was surprised I was able to get it working at all  ;D

You're not alone there (and I did it for a couple of years). I also want solid, road-ready hardware (preferably rackmountable and with built in PSU). Until then, the FTP remains just a cool toy.

There are other options synth-wise.

I use a Disaster Area Ghost Converter to feed my FTP signal into a GR-30.   What's nice about this is that the GR-30 is already configured for guitar/6-channel operation.  Programming old hardware synths can be a challenge.

Plus, I have always liked the sounds on the GR-30.

Quote13 pin socket

Well, legacy non functional 13 pin socket!

Jennifer Batten plays her signature 1999 Washburn JB-100 "Jennifer Batten" guitar which had a factory installed Roland internal GK-2A Kit and the "legacy" 13 pin jack on her guitar after the Roland hex PU was removed and replaced with the Fishman Tripleplay External (same as the regular production Triplay units many of us own ) has been on installed in its place.

You froze a frame grab from the video when she was emphasizing

" no more fragile 13 pin cables to worry about !"

Take what you need, put back a bit more, leave the place behind you better than it was before :-)

What were your impressions of the guitar/amp modeling software? I'm guessing 13 pin will still offer better modeling fidelity?

I don't see any guitar modeling there.  The announcement states "a series of midi guitar instruments specifically programmed for the Fishman TriplePlay Guitar Controller".

@ "I don't see any guitar modeling there"

I'm thinking you're probably right shawnb. I took another listen and while they've got a nylon sound, a base sound, a few lead sounds, and some world string type instrument demonstrations; it doesn't sound like guitar modeling as much as it sounds like synth based approximations. I guess my GP-10 still has a spot in my rig:)

FTP is only a MIDI Controller that  generates MIDI Note on/off messages

True hex PU DSP modeling is not possible

The MacPro hosting the East West samples plays a big role in the low latency on exhibition

Any hint or guess as to what price range may be for the East West samples?

Thanks!
