Myself I tend to use larger Resistor quad packs (1206x4)  and avoid anything smaller than 0603 passive discretes ( use 0805, 0603) Avoid 0402, 0201) ,and any ICs with BGA packages 

ICs it comes down to availability, DIP through hole IC components are becoming rare and often not available for modern ICs 

Last time I designed a PC board for through hole components was 1999 for Ernie Ball Sterling Bass 3 band active EQ "banana" board

Rigol o-scopes have a long and storied history of unlocking, hacking, and upgrading. The original hack that put Rigol on the map was the DS1052E upgrade that turned a 50MHz scope into a 100MHz scope. The latest low-end Rigol scope, the 1054Z can be unlocked in software to become an 1104Z with 100MHz of bandwidth, SPI, I2C, and RS232 decoders, twice the storage depth, and more triggers.

It appears Rigol's engineers are designing their products to capitalize on the hacker's proclivity to buy their tools to get the 'free' upgrade. This, of course, sounds just slightly insane, but no one seems to mind.

The process of upgrading the Rigol DS2072A scope is documented over on the EEVBlog, and requires only a USB cable and a computer with the Labview Runtime Engine installed. It's literally as simple as pressing a few buttons; a far cry from the previous keygen method that was also engineered over on the EEVBlog.

Parts getting placed on wrong locations can drive you crazy


It happens a lot on 1st production runs, at my work we order the Assembler to build a few boards , and allow me to test for BOM (Bill of Materials parts list) errors, then I approve the 1st article "Gold sample" and return it to the Assembler as a reference, prior to the mass production run

Also helps to repair dead electronics, or reverse engineer existing circuits

The PC based Soundcard Oscilloscope receives its data from the Soundcard with 44.1kHz and 16 Bit resolution. The data source can be selected in the Windows mixer (Microphone, Line-In or Wave). The frequency range depends on the sound card, but 20-20000Hz should be possible with all modern cards. The low frequency end is limited by the AC coupling of the line-in signal. Be aware, that most microphone inputs are only mono.

The oscilloscope contains in addition a signal generator for 2 channels for sine, square, triangular, sawtooth wave forms and different noise spectra in the frequency range from 0 to 20kHz. The signal can be defined by a mathematical formula as well. The signals are available at the speaker output of the sound card. These can be fed back to the oscillocope in order to generate Lissajous figures in the x-y mode.

Signal Sources

The signals for the oscilloscope can be internal to the computer (MP3 player, function generator etc.) or from external sources (line-in, microphone). For external sources care has to be taken, not to exceed the voltage range of the inputs. The range is usually only ±0.7V !! If higher voltage need to be analyzed, a voltage divider has to be used. Additional protection diodes are recommended in order to avoid any damage to the sound card and to the computer.
