Please forgive my rookie toolness,

I wanted a VG-88 for years, and I finally got a used one, and I am trying to learn all the stuff it can do.

However, one parameter I am stuck at, is in the pitch shifter. I am trying to bump a patch up a half step, so I go to guitar, vari guitar, pitch shift, toggle it to on, go right to the parameters, and I can make it bump a half step, and it warbles between the original pitch and the new tuning. What else do I have to tweak?

Congratulations! It's a good piece of kit.

How's your guitar plugged into it? I mean, are you using the special Roland pickup, or... what? With the right pickup, it should shift a half step perfectly, no warbles. Without a special pickup on your guitar, the pitch shifting won't work so well.

If you're using a special pickup, then, hmm, here's another idea: make sure the guitar's in tune. The VG-88 expects your guitar to be tuned normally, and works best when your guitar's in normal tuning.
