Awe, so sad to hear when one of the old guitar heros pass. RIP Ronnie! :(

Sigh.  I loved his playing in the early days but had a special affection for his 80s and 90s instrumental releases.  Some of his aesthetic there I borrowed for my own aliensporebomb music.  RIP Ronnie.

I remember in the 70's we used to listen to Montrose (amongst doing other things 😜) before skateboarding. Every time I hear Bad Motor Scooter on the radio it takes me back. RIP Ronnie.

Open Fire
Studio album by Ronnie Montrose
Released    January 1978
Genre    Instrumental Rock, Jazz Fusion
Length    35:27
Label    Warner Bros.
Producer    Edgar Winter

Open Fire was the first instrumental album from Ronnie Montrose which explored jazz, rock and acoustic concepts in the vein of Blow by Blow by Jeff Beck. Ronnie dropped hints in previous Montrose albums that he was heading in this direction.

The instrumental performance of Ronnie Montrose with jazz luminaries like Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams, was part of the legacy he left us. I also enjoyed his rocker essence. Sometimes the use of the pentatonic falls into abuse, as a dazzling costume to hide a massive lack of imagination, from there to boredom, but players as Ronnie came to rescue the true rock guitar sense where each of his notes was sheltered by a unique energy. That was what attracted such jazz luminaries and big audiences.
RIP Ronnie.

Fear just pulls you out of being true to music, which is coming from a place of love. Love is the opposite of fear. I stay away from anything fear-related.

Get on your Bad Motor Scooter and Ride - into that sunlit horizon, Ronnie. Drop low-E gear to D and wail, man.

I forget how great some of that stuff was until someone like Ronnie passes, and I take another listen.
