Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right forum for this topic, and mods feel free to move if necessary. But I was wondering what the consensus was regarding the Roland-compatible cables sold by Uneeksupply.com. I'm thinking of buying one or two of their ten-foot cables, but there appears to be conflicting reports in older threads as to whether or not they're compatible right of the box with GK-devices.

In any case, is there a better source you can recommend for shorter GK-compatible chords?

Thanks,

Ed

Hi Ed,
I've had good luck with those cables.
I wrote a review for the 20' version on their website.

Thanks. I thought somebody had mentioned incompatibility issues here, and I just wanted a reality check before I ordered a couple.

I understand third party cables can vary in quality by a wide margin.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-foot-13-Pin-Roland-Data-Cable-GKC-5-VG-8-GR-2A-GK-10-Feet-10-FT-/110758623227?forcev4exp=true&forceRpt=true
- and I advise anyone ordering any 13pin cable to use a volt / ohmeter after delivery , and verify that all 13 pins are wired straight through to both ends of the 13 pin cable - BEFORE you connect it to your Roland gear.

Don't assume that the 13 pin cable is Roland compatible, even if the seller tells you it is.

Bulk of 13 pin DIN cables on this planet are designed for Kenwood / Alpine car stereos - which use a similar looking 13 pin cable for their remote CD changers, and those will NOT work with your Roland gear.

QuoteCan a third-party cable damage your gear?

Absolutely  - if its not wired correctly

Roland Cables are wired with ALL 13 pins wired  1:1

in other words

Pin#1 = Pin#1
Pin#2 = Pin#2
Pin#3 = Pin#3
Pin#4 = Pin#4
Pin#5 = Pin#5
Pin#6 = Pin#6
Pin#7 = Pin#7
Pin#8 = Pin#8
Pin#9 = Pin#9
Pin#10 = Pin#10
Pin#11 = Pin#11
Pin#12 = Pin#12
Pin#13 = Pin#13

Compare to a Kenwood cable - which has many pins tied together and internally shorted  or not connected.

So does anybody make shorter (ten feet or less) GK-style patch cables that are forum approved?

For any 13 pin cable, either purchase from a seller with a decent return policy, or factor into the cost that the cable you purchase might be incompatible.

Many sellers of "Roland Compatible" 13 pin cables are selling a quality product.

And myself, I have purchased several from ebay sellers and never had any problems.

But again, I have heard horror stories from other forum members who purchased from the same ebay seller a few weeks later.
Many times the pic of the 13 pin cable in the ebay ad does not match the actual cable that was shipped.

Just got my cables from uneeksupply at ebay. It is a Kenwood cable, incompatible. You can hear all the strings at totally different volumes and still hear the A string even though the volume is down. See the sticker on the cable, I suppose KEN stands for Kenwood.
