In my opinion, Beaglebone is far less quirky than RPi.  My Fender Mustang bridge software runs on both, but I've had occasional slow response and USB glitches when using the Pi.

The Shield I/O Cape provides the ability to mount (almost) every Arduino Shield on the BeagleBone Black, no matter if it's using 3.3V or 5V logic levels. Changing from 3.3V to 5V is done by software. It can also be ordered with an onboard 16 pin I/O expander which is accessible over the I2C bus.

The Logic Supply BeagleBone EEProto Cape provides an easy workspace for creating protoypes. Through-hole solderpoints are spaced at 2.54mm (0.1") pitch. It includes two 46 pin headers (soldering required) and provides convenient SOT23 SMD IC's breakouts. The GND, 3V, 5V, SYS5V and P8-P9 trace banks are all clearly marked on the PCB for easy identification. NOTE: On the EEproto cape the BUS labelled SYS5V is connected to the external DC jack, and VDD5V is connected to the internal 5V. Prototype quickly with surface-mount EEProm pre-installed. Includes write-protect jumper and dip-switch for easy addressing. Has support for up to four capes Using available pass-through header pins.The Proto Cape works with both the original BeagleBone and the BeagleBone Black.

Expected results: Initially a basic MIDI controllable subtractive synth with 3 oscillators, low pass, high pass, and band pass filters, 2 envelope generators, and 2 LFO's. From there the intention is to add some type of control surface (either physical controls or perhaps a touch screen), some effects (phaser, distortion, reverb), and perhaps other types of synthesis options (FM, additive, maybe some type of patchibility). The result will be a fully featured MIDI instrument comparable to many commercial synths. This project is to be a learning experience with the intention of exploring using DSP for music synthesis. As of now this project is in the concept phase and is still in need of hardware for implementation.
