I bought a used Gr55 and was wondering if a fresh factory reset is the way to go?  Ive been rolling through the sounds and some are not even working is this normal? I mean I am new it could be a setting on it. But I watched youtube vids of setting up my guitar and output and all that good stuff. But like I said some sounds I get nothing at all. Just curious if this unit needs more tweaking or is there a problem with it not having those sounds heard?  Any help would be great...thx

I would install the floorboard editor and make a backup. Then do the factory reset.

Torch it with a reset and set it up 'your way'.

A reset should be safe.  You're only going to lose anything custom-built by the prior owner.

The problem may be a setting - it might help to know which patches are a problem.  But I'd only start to dig deeper after a reset.

thx for the help guys...   Now I seem to be having issues loading the new firm ware in the gr 55. Ive done ll the stuff im supposed to with getting the right driver for my PC.... Although I dont see a folder for this in my computer anywhere?  I used the USB and its already formatted correctly and has the 1.50 firmware on it. I did a factory reset so I could go from scratch and now I cant load the firmware.  Any suggestions?

did you extract the file from the downloaded *.zip folder?
like this..
copy the "gr55.bin" file to the root directory (top level) of your USB memory

Getting the update file
Please open/extract the downloaded "gr55_sys_v150.zip" file on your computer to get the update files in the "gr55_sys_v150" folder.

Procedure for the update
Never power-off your GR-55 while the update is in progress!

Creating the Update USB memory

Using your computer, copy the "gr55.bin" file to the root directory (top level) of your USB memory.
Un-mount the USB memory device through the correct procedure, then disconnect from the computer.

Update Procedure

With the GR-55's power turned off, connect your USB memory to the GR-55.
Hold down [ V-LINK ] button and [ USER ] button, and turn GR-55 power on.
The initial screen appears, and then the Display lights up completely.
After a short interval, the update is executed.
When the message Completed! is displayed, the update is finished.
Disconnect the USB memory from the GR-55.
Please verify the version number "1.02" with the procedure described in "How to know the version" part of this document.
When the entire update process has been completed, connect the USB memory to your computer and delete the file "gr55.bin" from USB memory.

To me, the idea that the unit could be broken or defective in such a way that only *some* presets do not work makes no sense at all. Which of course doesn't mean that it couldn't happen.

I once bought a VB-99 and I could not get any sound out of it, until I began to dig down into its innards and finally found a mixer setting  - one single setting - that was set in such a way as to kill all the sound output. I am *sure* that the previous owner couldn't find this setting and simply assumed that the unit was broken and decided to put it on Ebay so as to unload it on some unsuspecting sucker. So I got it in mint condition, with all parts and accessories, original box and all, and I got it really really cheap. Thanks! :))) And I found the setting to make it work like it should.

It's possible that the problem was something as simple as the foot pedal being in the wrong position with patches that had that foot pedal programmed for controlling the patch volume. (Assuming that that particular sort of patch is possible on a GR-55.)

Very simple mistakes can render complex gear useless and can be very difficult to find.

I have patches that make no sound on purpose. It is when you combine different units and use one controller to do the patch change on both units at the same time. Not in every patch you will want both units producing sound at the same time.

Also many GR-55 users build patches that employ the normal pickup, yet many 1st time GK-3 users forget the short 1/4" cable connection from the guitar to GK-3 = no sound

There are several settings that you can make that will screw up factory patches.

That's why I think a factory reset is a good first move if you've purchased a GR-55 used.

Case in point: External MIDI clock.  If the GR-55 is setup to listen to external clock, and there is no external clock provided, none of the beats voices work...
