It's odd - but most of the "details" windows will not open. I can't get my FX chains (A or B) to open up at all, Amp details, COSM guitar details...

What's also odd is that in "Window" in the menu bar, it shows that the windows are there to choose from, but they never appear on the screen.

So far, I've reinstalled everything, including USB driver updates, rebooted both machines... still no success. It's worked perfectly the last time I used the editor... Are there Flash updates or other typical driver updates that could be conflicting? Anyone else have this issue? Did I just miss something totally obvious, and I'm being a tool?

OK - went through and deleted everything (prefs, files, everything else I could find), and reloaded the programs, now all is fine.

In my research I have determined all VG-99 controls are in the Editor, but often they are buried in a hidden screen or in a location which may seem arcane and illogical.

Hi guys - I don't use bpm too often & now don't see it in the editor. Is it there somewhere? Thanks.

Since you posted this  in the General Discussion  area,  nobody knows which product you are referring too?

By looking at your profile and previous posts, I will assume this is for the VG-99 discussion and move it there.

Hi guys - Sorry to be dense, but:

I haven't done much w the librarian except backup bec they aren't midi files as i recall... but I don't think there is a way to sort patches in the editor...am I missing something? What is the easiest way to create a patch set & load to the VG? Thanks!

Librarian works best for that.

Hi,

I bought a VG-99 recently after years of using my VG-88. The notion of using a software editor is highly attractive but I only tried today after getting comfortable with the unit in and of itself. So, I fire up the VG, open the Editor (mac, 10.9) and it says to open Setup and choose "VG-99 Control", except there is no "VG-99 Control" option. Is there an alternative, like bus 1, session 1 and so on, that I can use?

I've just read that using the MIDI DIN I/O will let me use the Editor without USB. Is that my only option?

This would indicate you do not have the Roland VG-99 USB Driver for your Operating System installed.

For every new VG-99 owner, there is a specific order sequence of things to do.

1) Download the Roland VG-99 USB Driver for your Operating System.
(Note at this time none exist for Win8.1 32/64 or OSX Mavericks)
https://www.roland.com/us/products/vg-99/downloads/

2) Must follow the exact instructions for installing the Roland VG-99 USB Driver for your Operating System. This is available as a "Read_Me.HTML" file contained inside the Roland VG-99 USB Driver Zip file.
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=47.0;attach=11

3) Verify your Operating System reports the presence of the VG-99 USB Driver. On OSX, click the Apple icon on upper left, then click System Preferences, in the Other Section verify you see the icon for the VG-99 USB Driver.

4) Proceed only after all above steps are completed. If you do not have a   Roland VG-99 USB Driver for your Operating System - (Win8.1 or OSX 10.9 Mavericks), you must use a known working 5pin MIDI I/O adapter or USB  - MIDI cable.
Recommended USB-MIDI Cables are here:
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=8393.0

5) Download the Roland VG-99 Editor / Librarian 1.01 for your Operating system,
https://www.roland.com/us/products/vg-99/downloads/

6) Follow all installation setup instructions for the Roland VG-99 Editor / Librarian 1.01.  Realize there are two separate applications:

* Roland VG-99 Editor
* Roland VG-99 Librarian

If you installed the Roland VG-99 USB Driver for your Operating System, read the Roland VG-99 Editor Installation doc here:
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=50.0;attach=21
and
Roland VG-99 Editor Manual - which details how to make the data connection to VG-99 for control.
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=50.0;attach=19

If you are using a USB connection and running VG-99 Editor for the first time, be sure to
select "Set Up MIDI Devices..." from the "Setup" menu to open the dialog, then select
"Roland VG-99 CONTROL" for "VG-99 Input/Output."
If connecting through means other than USB, specify the port connected to the VG-99.

If you did not install a Roland VG-99 USB Driver for your Operating System, you will have to use a third party 5pin DIN MIDI In/Out interface and two MIDI cables (Mac MIDI Out to VG-99 MIDI IN, VG-99 MIDI Out to Mac MIDI IN), and configure the  Roland VG-99 Editor and Roland VG-99 Librarian to use this MIDI I/O connection instead. Note MIDI is a serial data connection at 31.125kHz, so expect slower operation when using a MIDI connection instead of USB cable direct to VG-99.

Thank you for taking time to compose a thorough answer. This is the first board I've joined, and will be playing catchup on so many things here. As mentioned, I've had a VG-88 for over a decade, and a little GR-20 to add some spice. The VG-99, however, is it's own creature, and I'll be learning for years to come. Thanks again.

Johnez

Sorry for dredging up an old topic.. it's still at the top so I don't see the harm.  Very new to my VG-99, just got it today actually lol.  I am having trouble getting it to sync via usb on Win7.  I have followed all of the instructions to the T.  I've installed the OS specific driver (win7 x64) and verified in dev_mgr that the VG-99 is using the Roland driver.

The problem I have is after I launch the VG-99 Editor, it states "MIDI devices aren't set up. Make sure the settings in the "Set Up MIDI Devices" dialog box."  This is the fun part, because I HAVE set them. I have tried selecting VG-99 CONTROL, VG-99 MIDI, my m-track audio interface, some cheap crapped USB->MIDI cable I have (that works with other DAWs) and when I click OK, it doesn't appear to apply the selection as the next time I click ANY button I get the "MIDI devices aren't set up...." blurb.  I have tried running the program as Administrator, running it in WinXP SP3 compatibility mode, and a few other tricks I could think of; nothing is helping.

I was able to grab an old laptop out of the drawer running WinXP and the Editor works exactly as it's supposed to.. does anyone have any insights?  I have searched the forums and google to no avail.. it seems others have similar issues and upgrading the firmware on the VG-99 (did that already, running 1.04 - again had to use the XP laptop) and using the updated 1.01 driver is the cure.. wish it was for me too!

Thanks in advance!

Possible the newer computer uses USB-3 spec ports.
Try using USB-2 ones (if there)
typically USB-3 ports are colored (blue or purple) and the USB-2 ones are black.

Failing that, try installing the Windows Xp shell add-on for Windows 7.

Thanks for the reply!  I actually was just coming back here to say I got it working!!! Only took about 5 hours lol :)

I was researching other threads and saw some people had success using the Roland UA-4FX win_vista_x64 drivers... I manually updated the VG-99 to use that specific .inf file and now it works! Only thing is that now my VG-99 is recognized by my PC as a "EDIROL UA-4FX", whatever that is, but I couldn't care less.. it's working.  Thanks!  Hopefully this will help others in the same boat.  Next step, figure out midi/softsynth triggering!

-Johnez

Update: Midi triggering works just fine with the EDIROL driver, using the NI Kontakt demo player.

Hello ,

I bought a new PC with Windows 8.1 (64 bits) and download the USB Driver for Windows 8 from Roland web site.

When I'm opening the VG-99 editor , it seem that it can't connect to the VG-99 since I can't get the user's presets .Does anyone has been able to work with the VG-99 editor on Windows 8.1 ?

Thanks

Read all "Read_Me.HTM" docs included in the Roland Zip files  - these are detailed installation instructions and must be observed.

Connections and Settings
1. Following the instructions in the VG-99 Owner's Manual, install the driver.

2. Following the instructions in the VG-99 Owner's Manual, connect the VG-99 and your computer. You cannot run VG-99 Editor if the VG-99 and the computer are not properly connected.

3. Turn on the power to the VG-99, then start up VG-99 Editor.

4. If you are using a USB connection and running VG-99 Editor for the first time, be sure to select "Set Up MIDI Devices..." from the "Setup" menu to open the dialog, then select "Roland VG-99 CONTROL" for "VG-99 Input/Output."
If connecting through means other than USB, specify the port connected to the VG-99.

5. For "Device ID," select the same number as the "DEVICE ID" parameter on the VG-99 (SYSTEM -> MIDI -> DEVICE ID).
* Do not disconnect the USB cable connecting the VG-99 while VG-99 Editor is running.
* If the USB cable is disconnected and reconnected while the VG-99 is in use, or if the power of the VG-99 is turned off, then on again, it may stop operating correctly. If this occurs, after resuming, you should exit all applications that use the VG-99, and turn the power of the VG-99 off, then on again.

Thanks Elantric  !  It's working now.

I can officially confirm there will NOT be a "Version 2" of the Roland VG-99 Editor.

The VG-99 was officially discontinued in April 2013

ConstruKction

Anyone had any luck with Windows 10 64-bit after the Anniversary Update?
Seems like the connection is now broken. :-\

Super bummed because I just found rolandvg99's fantastic violin patch and realllly wanted to toy around with it...

Headless68

Used the violin patch with my band yesterday - it's a winner :-)

ConstruKction

Arrghhh seriously, I soooo wanna try it.

Is there any other way to import a patch into the VG-99 other than through the Editor?

Headless68

The only thing I can think of is to manually create it using the same parameters

Get a separate USB <> MIDI adapter cable( $35 ) and use that to interface the VG-99 to your Win10 Anniversary computer.
Both VG-99 Editor and Librarian apps both support a 5 pin MIDI connection to VG-99
( but know its slower than USB  - but it does work)

Best to Contact Roland Support and ask when they will provide a Windows 10 Anniversary Edition USB Driver.
with each new Microsoft Windows update, its just another nail in the coffin for VG-99 usability

Remember Roland discontinued the VG-99 in 2011 and is a sunset technology.
Very soon it will be relegated to the pile of non supported gear - just like Roland Sonic-Cell, Juno-G, PCR-A30 - all need an older Operating system to run their USB drivers, or Editor / Librarians  because Roland no longer supports the latest operating systems

Its for these issues is one reason many of us know the need to have a archived boot drive images stored on a separate drive , and ability to swap boot drives to run older operating systems.

Last time I owned only one computer was 1983.

Since then Ive always needed to own at least 2 , to remain productive and ability to run multiple operating systems, so at least one computer / OS combo was compatible with my MIDI Hardware and my task at hand to get my work done.
