Title: 13-PIN PLUG & SOCKET DUST COVERS
Post by: billbax on June 24, 2016, 11:22:35 AM
Hi All,

I'm looking for three senior forum members to field test my 13-P plug and socket dust covers. I have three giveaway mixed bags of plug and socket covers (actually ten of each). If you're interested, feel free to drop me a pm with your address, and I will be happy to ship them to you free of charge. The only catch is, I would like you to review them here at the v-guitar forum.

Thanks,  Bill

Big thanks to Elantric and whippingpost for field-testing.

The idea with protecting and covering 13-Pin plugs and sockets is important. One length of 1.2M X 19.1mm heatshrink is enough to make 30+ covers, with a 'bill of materials' price of only £0.03 GBP each.

13-PIN SOCKET TEMPLATE PDF GUIDE
The protective covers are extremely easy to make, and only require a few simple tools. The PDF download template guide below should enable anyone to quickly fabricate enough covers to last a lifetime.
(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.separate-strings.co.uk%2Fwpimages%2Fwp531d69de_01_06.jpg&hash=a0b796a321bf49143065dea028618bd238c1d2d1)

TOOLS
A paint stripper gun (low setting) is usually best with heatshrink, although a hair dryer is nearly as good. Saying that, using the girlfriends hair dryer might be the end of you...burnt-out hair dryer = dog-house or codesmart's 'war council' etc.

TWEEZERS
A hot air gun or hair dryer can make holding a wobbling piece of heatshrink uncomfortable on your fingers , so using a long-reach pair of tweezers is a good idea.

ONE MORE... 1/4" / 6.35MM JACK COVER.  19.1mm Heatshrink.

Still need a 3rd senior?

I'm taking a VG-99 out on weekends to tiny bar stages these days. I have a a few other GR and VG stuff that's literally gathering dust in the garage right now, like my reviled GR-55. Hmm, not counting the switcher box, I've got 5 things that take 13-pin inputs. Dang, I'm a very fortunate dude.

Thanks guys,

My latest fantasy is for some future archaeologist (4016AD) to find a 13-pin plug and socket in full working order.

From the 13-pin vault of horrors...

The pin insert should be self-cleaning, as the mating pinch is good. In practice, it's usually a different story.

Got my pack of dust covers, and just fitted some on a GK-3 wart and the cable that just came from it. Fit seems perfect.

I'll be taking my VG out next weekend; we'll see how it goes and whether I lose 'em.

Now that my 13-pin socket's so well-dressed, I feel like giving it a bath, but I'm afraid to break or mess with anything that's working just fine. It'll be 10 years old soon.

Good to hear they arrived safely.  Looking forward to hearing about your road test.

Nice idea!

I'm thinking a hole through the flat end might be nice, to maybe attach it to the cable so it'll always be ready to hand.

Post by: mooncaine on August 21, 2016, 10:24:56 PM
Early review: they got through gig #1 just fine. I used these to cap the input socket on my VG-99 and a GK-3 wart attached to a Squier Strat, and the cable ends of the cable I was using (though, now that I think about it, I should go cap my spare cable, too).

I used 'em all week, pulled 'em off at least 6 times, back on 7, then at the gig, I didn't know where to put 'em, so I stuffed 'em in my front pocket. They still seemed to work at evening's end, when I was packing up and put 'em back on.

So far, so good!

Hi Mooncaine,

Thanks for the detailed field-test.

QuoteI'm thinking a hole through the flat end might be nice, to maybe attach it to the cable so it'll always be ready to hand.

After some thoughts and a detail chat with another senior forum member, I (we) think it's a bad idea keeping these covers outside of their resealable plastic bag.  Something to do with cross-contamination, by allowing dust and dirt to gather on the cover, and then fitting them to the plug/socket. IMHO this defeats the idea of a protective cover.

Yeah!! I got mine today. Immediately ran down to my basement and captured both the 13-pins and the 5-pins MIDI (yes they fit there to) on my too seldom used VG-99 and GR-33. Perfect fit!!!
Even though I haven't used rubber protection for years 8), I managed to fit these guys just perfect.

I took a photo but I'm too tired after driving four hours from kids and then rehearsing tonight with the band but I'll hope to post it soon.
Anyhow friends, this hi tech/low tech things (and clevere idea) is really great!

Thank you Sir Bill!!!

Cheers
Robert

I have an update after using them a few weeks:

I thought I'd lose them when I took them off, so I put them in my pocket till after the show. They survived a few hours in my pocket with my big clunky keychain, and still have the proper shape. Still worked fine. Cool!

Thanks guys for reviewing the covers.

The big question is, will the dust covers slow up the need to buy new 13-P cables?  I'm hoping the covers go some way towards breaking the nasty purchase cycle - only time will tell.

Cheers, Bill

I find value in using a semi hard case for transporting GK-13 cables , it prevents them getting crushed

One of these headphones cases work to store and transport a few GK cables

This is a great idea - I notice that even kept in the house 13 pin cable ends get oxidisation after a while ( I tend to use my old planet waves cable and the roland ones just sit there as spares

I recently received my 13 pin dust covers.
They are doing an excellent job in keeping the dust at bay from both the sockets and the plugs for all my 13 pin gear.
I have to say it never really occurred to me previously that there would be such a quick build up of dust.
After a few weeks of use though, I'm glad I've got a set now.

Thanks Bill.

I got some dust covers from Bill after one of my GP-10's started malfunctioning due to dust buildup, this happened in the middle of a studio session (I eventually fixed it by using DeOxit)

Now that I have the dust covers I don't have to worry about this issue happening again on stage or during a recording. I use to be pretty careless, leaving the cables exposed for months, now I have the covers to make sure the equipment won't be faulty when I return to it.

Hi All,

You would never think it possible to update a simple 13-pin plug and socket dust cover?

Improvements.

* White & Yellow - much easier to see/find at the gig or studio floor, and no more misplaced dust covers.

* Thicker walled dust covers, leading to an improved and tighter fit.

* Improved manufacturing with uniform finish.

Mr. Dirt & Mr. Dust surrounded...not looking too good for them. I need a good speech-bubble caption for Mr. Dirt on the left?
First answer gets a free 20-pack new White/Yellow dust covers bag. mooncaine gets the free bag of dust covers, and big thanks for making our little mates more scary. I won't be able to sleep tonight ;D

White glossy dust cover with 100% 13-pin coverage.

Yellow 13-pin socket dust cover. A thicker dust cover wall equals a tighter fit.

A yellow 13-pin socket dust cover is also compatible with a standard 5-pin MIDI socket. A USB 'clear' dust cover photobombs the frame.

Makes good covers, too. They fit!
My cables have white covers now, and my VGs got the yellow ones. Way easier for me to see.

No, not in the media/marketing industry, and my media skills are generally average. The energy and motivation behind the 13-pin plug and socket dust covers, is the continuing horror stories posted here at the forum and elsewhere. If I had the money and time, I would happily supply the entire v-guitar forum membership with a free bag of 13-pin plug and socket covers.

Bill,
I received mine and have been using them a few days, this is a brilliant product and idea!
You do give instructions to DIY. But sometimes it's easier to just purchase. (no borrowing of the wife's hair dryer!!)
I also agree with the brighter white and yellow.

Thanks again for providing this service,

Big thanks to codesmart and Fred for your posts.

Fred, those photos are excellent and show how the new bright covers do not blend into the background. If those were the old type, black and clear, you might be looking on the floor for five minutes. Thanks !

After having used these dust covers for a few months now in the humid and salty air in west Norway.
It has not been necessary to clean pins and sockets with DeOxit on any of my guitars or V-gear.
It has also given me piece and mind, knowing that dust or debris are not going to be a problem while travelling to rehearsals and gigs.
There is a PDF guide on http://separate-strings.co.uk/13pinprotection.html on how to make them yourself, but at the price he's asking for a bag of 20, why bother.

Hi All,

The essential 13-pin plug & socket dusts covers are now available in a 30-pack, with 10 of each type.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fseparate-strings.co.uk%2FStraightcover.gif&hash=5bbe800c1b8f518164bb5983ae12b30d930ab484) (https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fseparate-strings.co.uk%2FRightangled.gif&hash=a4563c22c203981ae0d204b37945d89422d7d6be) (https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fseparate-strings.co.uk%2FSocketcover2.gif&hash=3fb4ebecea762f5b053c169171ba34c40e795814)

Prices including shipping:

UK - £10.00

USA & CANADA - $16.70 USD

EUROPE - 14.67 EURO

ELSEWHERE - $16.90 USD

With shipping they work out at about £0.33GBP each, and feel this is a reasonable price to pay for protecting 13-pin plugs & sockets.

You wouldn't believe it, but there's a new youtube movie in progress, showing how to make all three 13-pin dust covers. It also stars Mr. Dirt & Mr. Dust, and this time I pick up a whole load of verbal abuse - most of which will have to be beeped-out :D

Movie preview.

A Review in Reverse
(Because I want to know if I should buy something and I like to look at the pictures before I bother reading the details.)

The Verdict:
I would recommend these to a friend.

Bottom Line:
These things are pretty slick! It's a very simple idea that could easily be a DIY project, but why bother? I've thought about making some of these for the last couple of years, but thinking about it doesn't keep dust out of your connectors. Even though he shows you exactly how to make them, the cost is low enough that it makes more sense to just get some of these to protect your equipment.

Product Photos:
My set-up – A GR-55 and a Helix. I dusted everything 2 weeks before I took these pictures, and am pretty surprised how quickly things got dusty again!

(PS. I dusted everything after I took the pictures, because I was grossed out!)

The 13 pin cable I use at home.  I flip it when I switch between my Reverend with the internal GK pickup, and my Guild with the external GK-3 pickup.

My Helix and GR-55 go into separate backpacks when I travel.

I noticed that tabs on the dust covers bind on the sides of the backpacks when they get packed, so I decided to try a modification to try to keep them from getting in the way.

I wrapped a couple of covers in tin foil, bent them into a 90° shape, and held them briefly over a candle and held that shape till they cooled. They kept their shape nicely when I unwrapped them. Now they don't stick out when they go in the back packs and aren't in the way of any cables while playing. The covers that go on cables aren't going to get modified.

The  90° bend works well in and out of the case.

I've been been doing virtual band practice during COVID, and hope to get back together with the band in a few months. When I'm traveling again, I'll have to see how well I'm able to keep track of the covers between set-up, and the end of the night. Mooncaine mentioned putting a hole in the flat end to fasten them to the cable or to keep them from getting lost. I may try something like that when the time comes.

Build Quality:
Pretty decent. Especially considering the price. I can imagine that the leading edges might get a little stretched or bent over time and a lot of use, but there are plenty in the bag, and it can't hurt to get some extras. I can't picture the build quality getting better unless they were injection molded and 4 or 5 times the price.

How Well Do They Work?
They fit nicely, and shouldn't get easily knocked off during transit if you take reasonable care of your gear when you pack up. (If you have this kind of equipment, you probably already do.)

Why Do You Need Them?
My old I.T. director used to tell me two things; "You don't really have your data if you don't have it in at least two places.", and "Dust is the enemy." Those are the two best bits of advice I've ever gotten about protecting my data and hardware.

What they are:
Protective dust covers that have been custom molded to fit your GK, MIDI, & SLR plugs and sockets.

Another satisfied 13pin dust cover customer: these things are great!
If you are an owner of multiple GR/VG/SY devices and a 13pin cable collector like me (i have twelve 13pin devices and 15 cables!), then these dust covers are a great way to protect your cable-ends, gk and midi inputs from exposure-corrosion and particle-obstructions while the devices are idle; These and a dose of Deoxit once in a while and you should be in for decades of trouble-free use.
i ran out of the white ones fast because i have so many cables, but i found the red ones fit my straight cables: its tight, and you have to press on the locking thingy in to get the cover to slide on, but it works nicely!
Thanks Bill:-)

Hi Bill,

I'd have liked to order a bag of these (an elegantly simple solution to a problem I had not thought of) but as I live in Ecuador & to say the postal system here is "unreliable at best" is an understatement...

I wanted to thank you for the how-to video of making them, which is the approach I'll have to try (if I can find 3/4" heat shrink tubing here...), since I'm not sure when I'll next be travelling to somewhere that I can have them mailed to... I appreciate your generosity in sharing this fantastic idea!

Thanks again,

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your comments on the 13-pin dust covers.  You are probably right about the Ecuador postal system :(

If you can get hold of some 19.1mm heatshrink with a 2:1 shrink ratio, you should be able to create all of the various 13-pin dust covers.  It takes practise with a lot of messing just to get the covers right.  The white straight covers are the easiest, while the 13-pin socket covers require tweezers and an extracted 13-pin socket plastic centre!

My supplier here in the uk:

http://www.rapidonline.com

White Heatstrink straight 13-pin plug dust covers.
https://www.rapidonline.com/unistrand-19-1mm-x-1-2m-heat-shrink-sleeve-white-03-2435

Yellow 13-pin socket dust covers.
https://www.rapidonline.com/unistrand-19-1mm-x-1-2m-heat-shrink-sleeve-yellow-03-2369

Red right-angled plug dust covers.
https://www.rapidonline.com/unistrand-19-1mm-x-1-2m-heat-shrink-sleeve-red-03-2358

Strictly speaking, you don't need to buy all three colours, as you can easily colour code them with a pen or electrical tape.  What's important is the 19.1mm 2:1 supplied heatshrink specification, And the rest is up to you.

The DIY YouTube movie guide route takes a lot of practise, while the 13-pin socket and (codesmart's) right-angled plug molding is tweezers fiddly.

At last, a multi-pin cable manufacturer recognising the need for plug protection.  If only we could get them to do the same for the socket?  It's madness protecting a plug, leaving the socket unprotected and exposed.  Replacing a multi-pin cable/plug is inconvenient, although replacing a multi-pin PCB socket is off the scale. :'(

Hi Everyone,

Don't know about you guys, but unprotected XLR plugs and sockets give me sleepless nights.  A simple solution is an easy to make XLR dust cover, and you only need a length of 19mm diameter heatshrink to get started.  If you don't have a heat gun for heatshrink molding, then you can always opt for a hairdryer....girlfriends preferably, when she's not around. If the dryer burns out, that's hard luck and you don't know anything about it. :-X
Alternatively, get yourself a heat gun  https://www.rapidonline.com/black-decker-kx1650-heat-gun-1750w-84-8843
Suitable heatshrink 19.1mm.  https://www.rapidonline.com/unistrand-19-1mm-x-1-2m-heat-shrink-sleeve-yellow-03-2369

If you want to make an XLR socket dust cover, you will need a couple of cheap plastic XLR sockets, which can easily be broken down to socket depth.

Daw interface XLR socket dust covers. Heatshrink material costs works out to £0.05GBP a piece.

XLR plug cover...should have done it years ago but didn't.

Female XLR cable connectors need covers too, and hate to think of what's inside of those dark tunnel contacts.

Food for thought.

I'm just a new V-Guitar owner so this is my first experience of working with GK-13 cables and sockets. So far, a new cable, GK-3 and GP-10, no problems — and I intend to keep it that way! So @billbax and his 13-pin covers seem a very cost-effective way to keep those connectors clean.

My GP-10 is already settling in to life in it's new home on my pedalboard and in the pedalboard bag, along with the 13-pin cable: the 13-pin covers are going back on the GP-10, the GK-3 and the GK-13 cable every time they go back into their bags. Bill's service was excellent - he let me choose to skew the order more towards straight connectors since I don't have any right-angle connectors yet, delivered quickly, and was pleasure to deal with. If you don't have 13-pin covers yet, what are you waiting for? You know those 13-pin sounds are worth it... ;)

I recently had an issue with one of my strings (5th) not working when plugged into the VG-8ex. Some helpful folks on this forum helped me identify the issue as a bad cable pin. Swapped out the cables and all is well. To prevent further issues, I contacted Bill and purchased a set of the plug and socket dust covers. Bill is awesome - very responsive, and the covers shipped fast.

In short, they work great. I have pets in the house and they kick up plenty of dust. The sockets fit perfectly over the cable pins and the sockets in the VG system preventing anything from getting in there. Highly recommended to protect your gear and lengthen its lifespan.

I am still very happy with these things!

I got my first set 3 years ago (see post #54 above) and have been using theme faithfully ever since.
I had one cable that sat unprotected in my bass player's basement for about a year while we were on a break during covid. It's the only cable I've had any noise issues with. I started using the covers on that one when we started playing in person again a year and a half ago. It started to have some noise issues a couple of months ago, so I cleaned it for the first time since I bought it. (I also took the chance to clean the contacts on my other cables and devices while I was at it because it should still be done from time to time.)

I'm convinced that the dust covers have helped reduce the amount of noise that I get and greatly reduce the amount of cleaning that I have to do.

I bought a second set to protect the rest of my equipment and have some spares. They aren't expensive and they will save you cleaning time and aggravation from noisy kit.
