it also has a "SYNTH/FX", "BLENDER" and "WRITE" button on it too. (looking at the video frame by frame - looking for clues reflected in the CTL switch chrome)

What could it be ??

Possibly a monophonic PCM synth/fx for 'regular' non GK guitar that tracks to a chord root note??

If the sound track is giving away any clues?

Maybe it's a floor version of the GT-001 ??

I don't have the faintest idea what it is but I'll definitely be buying one of those.

EDIT: A COSM/synth unit without the 13-pin GK cable? Could we be that lucky? Have Roland finally accepted that the expensive and fragile 13-pin standard is really unworkable?

Frankster

I wonder if this will simply provide a monophonic version of the GP-10's synthesis capabilities, combined with some effects processing and COSM?

If that's the case then I don't feel the need for one but the programmability and BOSS effects would probably make it about as much guitar synth as most people need. Present company excluded.

Looks like our friends at Boss have something big on the way that will be unveiled at next week's huge annual Musikmesse trade show in Frankfurt, Germany!
All we have to go on at this point is a teaser video Boss has posted, but all will be revealed on April 15!

We can't wait!

QuoteTwo "CONTROL SWITCHES", four knobs and a display can be easily seen.

QuoteAgain the view from above.

QuoteThe bottom button is labeled here with synth / FX. At the bottom is easily seen EXP / CLT for an input on the back.
QuoteWhat is that? This much is clear before: Boss presents a new pedal. However, this will usher in a new era. Means to me that there is something that does not lead Boss in the range. At first glance, or "listener" is what you get to hear, just not a new era of Boss or very great innovation. Rather, it is a mix of many 80s clichés and could also originate from a Pink Floyd song.
Nevertheless, it is quite interesting. Even if you do not get to see much in the video, but some can be stated: It has something like two channels (CTL1 & CTL 2) [ 2 CTL FOOT SWITCHES], a display - that works almost certainly digitally - including 3-4 pots for settings and three buttons on the side. One of them is labeled with synth / FX, the other two are not readable [BLENDER & WRITE]. At the top is definitely a power connector and a EXP / CTL, ie a connection for an expression pedal for a CTL channel. What is CTL, we still do not know exactly. Maybe something with Control? A remote control for other effects or even external synths? Then would certainly be a MIDI connection here, one can not recognize.[ACTUALLY THIS IS TYPICAL EXTERNAL CTL/EXP JACK]
Maybe it's a guitar synth? But said it would not really new, and certainly no innovation. It could also be a kind of new modulation multi-effects with a new chip. I am very excited. At Musikmesse hopefully I learn more.

QuoteBoss teases mystery pedal in pre-Musikmesse video
Modeling, MIDI, or what?
Total Guitar, GuitaristApril 10, 2015, 10:03 UTC

MUSIKMESSE 2015: Boss have released a tantalisingly blurry video ahead of next week's massive Frankfurt Musikmesse gear show.

The only clues they're giving are the video tagline - "New sounds, new era, new inspiration - April 15" - and the frankly retro-80s soundtrack, but by squinting really hard we reckon it could well be some sort of MIDI, modeling or synth unit. Or all three.

All will be revealed at Musikmesse next week. In the meantime, what do you think it could - or should - be?

I know....they've combined the GR-D and GR-S into a single, rebranded Boss product!  :-)

This actually got a very audible laugh out of me, thanks!

(By the way, are people here being paid to advertise this Tapatalk thing?)

Very interesting (sorry if you have already seen this or posted) sounds very interesting, and looks like they have gone with traditional stomp box switches, just hope they are lighted!!!   Getting some GAS!!!

Nope!  I think it must be a default sig in Tapatalk. I'll find it and remove it!

I sympathize with this point of view, but if you look at it carefully, like I eventually did, it's not Roland's, or Line 6's, etc etc fault. The technology doesn't make my music, I do. The technology can be very distracting but I eventually found that the promise of new sounds that no one has ever heard, or every sound that has ever been heard before, is a false promise: none of this makes it any easier to write good music and maybe even makes it more difficult. After all, deciding which is the best amongst a seemingly endless number of synth pad, or snare drums sounds, or fuzzes, is not really the same as making music but it still takes effort and energy that would probably be better spend on the actual music.

And of course, while I don't know about anyone else, I find myself with more and more poorly and incompletely documented software and hardware that I don't know how to fully use.

On the other hand, there is a certain minimum of gear that people need, a different amount for different people of course. But going beyond that can end up wasting huge amounts of time, money, and effort.

Quote13 pin hex pickup will vanish in time.
As processors speed up it will be done with a mono source.
Mark my words its just a matter of time!

Headless68

Regards the end of the VG empire - I see it as a new beginning that will truly open this world up to mass guitar market - Jam Origin already proved that polyphonic capability via a mono source signal is possible now -  tie that up to dedicated processing (not a PC) and the ability to effect the 6 string as on a hex pickup and that will change things in a big way :-)

bring it on

....I  would be surprised if this is it though because I would expect that leap to have a Roland not a Boss badge on it (as first)

Dont forget there are far more "Boss"  Dealers
http://www.bossus.com/dealer_locator/

than Roland  Dealers
http://www.rolandus.com/dealer_locator/

Roland has made it clear that moving forward,  "Boss" will be the Guitar products brand.
It would not surprise me if the "big news" at 2015 Summer NAMM in Nashville  this August is the "New" Boss GR-55 - which is just new paint on the existing Roland GR-55.

They have already re-badged "Roland Cube" amps and dropped the "Roland" logo from the front grille.

Old

New

Pointing that they might create a separate  "CUBE" Amp Division

Re: Amazing sounds from standard quarter inch guitar cable:
It's getting to that point.  The Strymon Big Sky I have does some amazing things with standard guitar.  The voices sound like a mellotron.  The textures of the other presets are lovely - and the filter mode for making a guitar sound like a mic'ed speaker is probably the best I've ever heard - that could have been a separate box.

Before the VG-99 I did some cool things with my old Lexicon Vortex that sounded synth-like.

I'm still digging my VG-99 but I realize it, nor any of my other electronic gear can last forever so if it dies I need a "plan B".  The 99 has let me work far faster than any of my previous equipment.  Instead of needing lots of keyboards and bass guitars and multiple electrics I can use the 99 to do the work of a lot of other gear.  Eventually my 99 will be studio bound (like of like my Vortex).

I'm down to just a handful of gigs a year now it seems so the bulk of my work is recording in my studio.  So long as some of this gear can keep working I'll use it.

The sound of some synths are endemic to particular decades.  The Roland demo we heard was that of 80s musical content but like any synth there's ways to make it sound more current/modern.
