Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum and I was wondering if anyone is using a midi controller to control the VG-88's effects parameters in real time. I've seen no mention of it on the forum, if so could you share any experiences (either good or bad) you've had.
cheers

use the same concept we use for other Roland  / Boss GK Processors  - fully explained here
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=2951.msg111764#msg111764

Read

MIDI Controller Setup / Debug Strategies

and the VG-88 Vedit Editor - makes easy access to the VG-88's Control Assignments
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=6455.0

Read the VG-88 Manual - search on ASSIGN - there are Eight  ASSIGNs, each can be mapped to have VG-88 FX  as TARGETS, and the SOURCE can be mapped to external MIDI CC# messages received from external MIDI Controller.

(Read docs here:

Read VG-88 OM pages 31-32 that cover the details of:

Setting the ASSIGN Functions

I used a fcb behringer 1010 for a while when I had more gear worked fine controlled some fx parameters as well as an lexicon jam man and an electrix repeater and a line 6 pod,
I got tired of hauling so much stuff around but other than that worked fine as I can recall,
Still use the 88 for some gigs
swimming with a hole in my body

I play Country music too, I'm just not sure which country it's from...

Hi Elantric,
I've read the link https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=2951.msg111764#msg111764 but it deals with CC and PC messages but as far as I'm aware the VG-88 deals with sysex messages only to change parameters or am I missing something.

Hi Brak(E)man,
I also own a FCB1010 and it's a great bit of kit. I was going to use it more as a stomp box and maybe use the 2 expression pedals to control the more important parameters.

Here are the possible VG-88 FX Targets for the ASSIGNS

Thank you Elantric, I over looked this possibility. I will try it out tomorrow.
I was going to use the BC Manager for the BCR2000 because it can output sysex messages apparently. I did link  VEdit to BC Manager with MidiYoke Virtual Midi to read the sysex messages(which works!!). Then copy and paste the message into something like Bome's Midi Translator.
I'm still a novice dealing with such things as sysex, that I need to read more

like the VG-8, the VG-88  lacks Guitar to MIDI  function

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GUITAR SYNTHESIZERS AND THE VG-8

Tags: gi-10, gr-1, vg-8, vg-88, gr-09
The VG-8 / VG-88 V-Guitar is not a guitar synthesizer like the GR-09, GR-1 or
GR-30/33, or a Guitar-to-MIDI Converter like the GI-10. In the GR-Series and
the GI-10, the signal from the GK-2A pickup (which is analogous to a standard
pickup signal for each string) is converted to a pitch which is then available
to trigger a sound, either internally (GR-09, GR-1, GR-30) or through MIDI.
This makes these units ideal for sequencing and playing realistic sounds like
pianos, organs or drums.

On the VG-8 / VG-88,GP-10 the signal from the GK-2A / GK-3 hex Pickup is modified in realtime into an
entirely new sound which allows all of your picking and playing techniques to
be preserved. The VG-8/ VG-88 does not transmit MIDI note numbers, nor does it
act as a MIDI sound module. Although the VG-8 / VG-88 has the ability to modify
the guitar sound into unique sounds (like a synthesizer would), there is
absolutely none of the tracking delay normally associated with guitar synths
because the sound of the guitar is modified in real time. The VG-8 / VG-88 is
unsurpassed in creating a multitude of authentic guitar tones which would
previously only be attainable by purchasing a truckload of different guitars,
amps and speakers.

What sort of midi control are you after ?
Guitar to midi notes for synth software
or
a midi foot controller for patch changes and real-time effect control ?
