Hey
in short
I assign the "built in" expression pedal" to volume midi cc 7 ( and for some reason i managed to use cc 10 for a short while )
connected a midichord between the VG and line 6 nothing happened ,  except that......
1: the expression pedal that was/is assign to FX volume stopped working and that the patch level knob stopped working and I think the balance knob to all the other buttons etc seemed to work.
2: most of the patches went silent or extremely low in volume but not all of them  ::)
3: when i import the patches from my computer the volume is on and where it should be
but the expression etc still doesn't work  :)

I haven't been able to check any further 'cause i took sick , maybe because of the weird behavior of the 99  >:(
any suggestions ????

I don't know if that helps (maybe I am off topic), but the manual says:
"Use only the specified expression pedal (Roland EV-5, BOSS FV-500L/500H with a connection cable (stereo 1/4" phone – stereo 1/4" phone); sold separately). By connecting any other expression pedals, you risk causing malfunction and/or damage to the unit."

I tried once connecting an expression pedal other than the EV-5 (I connected a Bespeco expression pedal) and the same thing happened. The FV control went to 0, making my patch silent and it was not responding to the Bespeco pedal's movements..

There is a thread somewhere listing the expression pedals that work with the VG99. I think they must be 10K ohm linear

Brak(E)man

It is a Roland EV-5 and it has been used before with the 99 and the 88 and the 8
it still worx fine with the 88
thanx anyway but that is not the problemo

You probably have more than one or conflicting controllers assigned to the same target. Look through your controllers to make sure only one targets these parameters.

Brak(E)man

Thanx , I figured it had to do with that since it changed when i assign the expression pedal to midi CC7 and it worked before . the weird thing is that most patches changed and all of them at the same time so it must be a global setting but then again some patches didn't . and when they ate uploaded from the computer the volume is ok , but the volume pedal + patch level knob doesn't work
is there something specific about the midi routing that I should check, there's usb and the reg in out etc.
I'll try to look into it tomorrow if my fing headache goes away.

almost all patches even the presets ( but not quite all ) had no or very low volume.
I can't get this , it seems like a global volume issue but
1 I can't find anything.
2 not all the patches are affected.

all of a sudden it's the opposite ???
most of the patches have the right volume only a few not and they seem to be in the user section.

and the Dbeam is set to off in the editor but on in the 99 same with ribbon
neither work.
expressionped is on doesn't work
patch level and balance works with the editor but not on the vg
same with the direct control knobs etc. etc.
control 1 and 2 works just fine on the vg

what the F is happening ?? anybody HELP !!!!

I've tried to look through the controllers to make sure only one targets one parameter.
Can't find any conflicting controllers.

It's working , problem solved BUT I'm not sure why
after going to the calibrate dbeam and ribboncontroller and calibrating them
everything works.

It would be nice to know why and what made the VG react like that.

any input would be appreciated.

Glad you got it working.
Suggest fire up the Roland VG-99 Librarian and make a FULL BACKUP of your working system asap.

Its very easy to "break something" midway thru a VG-99 patch editing session, particularly if you touching System Controllers.

Brak(E)man

yeah I've done that and did a sysexdump as well (i hope that includes the system.)
The only thing i changed when this happened was that I assign the expression pedal to
midi out CC7 ( and 10 for some reason that my mind was not aware of , I have worked with midi since 1986 :)
and connected a midi cable to my line 6 pod ( didn't check that it recognized CC7 but of course it does )
but nada except all the crap that happened, I still wonder why ? and if there's a bug in this unit.
anything else I should do ? upgrade to latest firmware ?

The VG-99 Top things to Know thread has links to all current firmware, VG-99 Librarian, VG-99 Editor.
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=13.0
Throw away the "Roland VG-99 Driver CD-ROM" that came with the VG-99 - all contents are buggy and stale.

These are current versions all VG-99 users should be using. (2013)
* VG-99 Firmware 1.04

* VG-99 Editor / Librarian Version 1.01

Quote(i hope that includes the system.)

Be sure you read the Complete VG-99 Librarian Manual - its in the "Help" drop down menu in the Librarian.

VG-99 Librarian has modes for saving / restoring:
* Patch
* System
* GK Setting
* Favorite Settings

For a full backup of the VG-99, you must perform 4 separate backup operations using the VG-99 Librarian -

1 ) Set VG-99 Librarian Mode to Patch, and Backup VG-99 Patches
2 ) Set VG-99 Librarian Mode to System, and Backup VG-99 System
3 ) Set VG-99 Librarian Mode to GK Setting, and Backup VG-99 GK Settings
4 ) Set VG-99 Librarian Mode to Favorite Settings, and Backup VG-99 Favorite Settings

Thanx
you're most helpful
i really like this forum !  :)
I think I have the firmware before that update.
I checked when i bought it 6 months ago or so.

I have done my research but haven't come across anything like this before.
The other 99 unit of mine have never behave in any weird way.
and both the 8 and the 2 88s I have have never misbehaved in any way.

the librarian is not the most easy app to get ,
it has some thing's to ask for.  ::)
so has the documentation that comes with the unit and the software.

that was a sysex dump made to sysex librarian,

I've been using the VG99 live for 5+ years (I think) with 3 to 5 gigs a week and 0 issues....except a crushed GK chord recently....my bad. Any problems I've had are self inflicted from configuring things. Roland stuff is pretty bullet proof. Once setup the way you like it, it'll run reliably for years. I trust mine.

I've also gigged many times with the 99 - it has been a stellar performer for me.

GK Devices:  Roland VG-99, Boss GP-10, Boss SY-1000.

I've gigged extensively with my 8 and the 2 88 i have but not with any of the 99 , I was planning to now but the difference is that none of the 8 or 88s have behaved erratic in the studio playing and programming so .......
that really brings up another topic

I play exclusively VGs , no guitar amps or other fx except a small lopper ,
what to do if it breaks down on the road or on the stage.
if you play " normal" guitar there's usually a backup somewhere , right ??
I have worried about this before , flying in to a festival gig , no time for sound check
just get on stage set up in 5 min , ( the drummer and bass player borrows a drum kit and a bass amp )
and hope that it cranks up and that the sounds are there , the chord is still intact etc
