The local Guitar Center has a few of these, asking $25 each. I'm wondering if anyone on the list has tried these, and if so what you think of them. I found one review that claims 50 to 20kHz response, and lots that say it works well with a mixer but not with a straight guitar signal. Looks like it could be a nice cheap monitor if the sound is any good.

I got one  - I would not recommend it

Turn it up and this Altec Lansing RM3010 yields Very low volume and susceptible to crackling sounds if you crank it up too high.

I do recommend another similar self powered speaker designed for gaming systems  - the Polk HitMaster

They pop up every few weeks on Amazon (I own two Polk HitMasters - just got my 2nd one last week )

Thanks Steve. Think I'll pass on the RM3010 - better to pass on a "deal" than throw money at a disappointing speaker  :)
