The passing of Steve Jobs this past week has had me in moments of self reflection. I'm 3 months older than Mr Jobs. In the 1960's I went to grade school in Cupertino, CA.  The present site of Apple headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA back in 1963 was the Mariani Dried fruit packing plant.  The site of the barber shop where I would ride my bicycle is now the Apple HQ parking lot. The apple and apricot orchards I played in at age 10 are now Apple Computer R&D labs and warehouses.
I often wonder what my fate would have been had my Dad not been transferred away from the silicon valley in 1969. Me thinks my career may have taken a different turn since I was living smack dab in the middle of the action that would occur there in 1977.

But back in 1967 my mom played bridge with the lady who taught John Fogerty how to play guitar. My mom had all the CCR records, and needless to say, I can play most CCR tunes today blindfolded. I was self taught, and learned to play guitar on those tunes, and still love them.

In 1967 Guitar Player Magazine began  10 miles away from my house in nearby Campbell, California out of a local music store  -  Guitar Showcase, which is still there today. (highly recommended store in the SF bay  / San Jose area!)

As luck would have it, back in 2007 I found myself at the right place at the right time. I was at Guitar Showcase with my girl friend to arrange to buy a Stratocaster to be used as a fund raiser for the "Guitars not Guns" kids at risk program which I support each year. The Guitar certainly has always been my best friend when I needed one.

Also at the store that day just happened to be John Tristao, formerly of the late 1960's San Jose pop group "People" (who had a regional hit in 1968 with a remake of The Zombies tune "I love you"), and now performs with Creedence Clearwater Revisted.

We had a good BBQ lunch with Guitar Showcase owner, Gary Wineroth and got to talking. That day John was to be interviewed and appear on Guitar Showcase's local cable access show "Makin' Music" as a solo - to be filmed that afternoon.
At the very last minute John said - "damn lets find a drummer and bass player and play on TV as a band!
I said "OK!"and an hour later I found myself on local San Jose cable TV:
(here I am on a loaned Tele Thinline in the first 4 minutes before the interview.)

( I apologize  - a little sloppy at the end - hey its only Rock & Roll, and this was one take!
And yes, Ive had a haircut since then!)
and check out Elliot Easton at the 15 minute mark.

Oh , I pop back in at the 25:00 minute mark to close it out.

Cupertino holds a special place in my heart.

Thanks guys! :)
Ive posted this before.
Here's my surf band on a 4th of July parade

My real 1963 Fender Tube Reverb is at the front of the guitar signal chain - its essential part of my sound in the surf band - The Dentures.
On this occasion I'm playing a DiPinto Galaxie IV "Los StraitJackets" model >Fender Tube Reverb > Barber TonePress > Boss LS-2 as a clean Boost > Cube 80XL on "Blackface" COSM Amp setting.

Quotephotobucket only had partial songs so did youtube.
This is what happens when you hand someone a digital point and shoot camera and ask them to shoot video. They get bored easily, and dont understand the concept of click " record" and then aiming the camera and waiting around for the entire song.
When we opened for Dick Dale last December I handed out 5 cameras that all shoot hi def stereo, but all I ended up with was 120 short 20 second length video clips, one full 30 minute wide shot (from a tripod) at the mix desk.
I'm still editing!
Seems most folks in society have ADD these days, (by design.)

You looks great and play good too!

Yea - it was huge in the SF Bay area too on Top 40.

Ironically, I had seen John Tristao perform back in 1968 with SF bay area band "People" at a free concert at the local High School, and was a fan.

Eventually was able to meet up will all the rest of CCR too. I co-produce a similar local cable access show here in San Luis Obispo, and am active in non-profit fund raising.

Ive already met and talked to most of hero's,  except Jeff Beck  !

I saw them at the Orlando Sports Arena in 1968 as well. They opened for the WHO. I still have the ticket stub. I owened a well respected Music Store for 20 years in the Detroit area and Met most of my heroes, Because of our guitar repair reputation. It's pretty awesome.

Steve,
How does the spring reverb work on the float????
I would think it would be boinging all over the place.

aliensporebomb

Yeah!  Would you have to shockmount your amp or it would be awfully strange to hear it bouncing and boinging.  Still, yeah - the Dentures are definetely my kind of entertainment!
My music projects online at http://www.aliensporebomb.com/

Look above a few posts and click on the video of The Dentures in the 2010 Cayucos 4th July Parade for an example of what we sound like.  No annoying crashed reverb tank splashes.

A local Surf Band for the 4th July Parade is appropriate for this locale

The original early 60's Accutronics/ Hammond Pan is a brilliant design with 4 separate suspension springs that actually work well to isolate and dampen outside mechanical vibration. Leo  Fender listened to what the stars of the day like Dick Dale demanded for his live rig, so Leo ordered a custom reverb pan that had just the right damping and Tone. It's housed in a Tolex Bag which is actually a crucial part of the tone. Since the reverb pan sits inside its own bag , it's more acoustically isolated from the ambient sound pressure waves, which translates that you may place the '63 Fender Tube Reverb in front of a Tube Guitar Amp - like an 85watt Dual Showman driving a pair of Fender custom designed JBL D130F 15" Guitar Speakers , and have nothing but great reverb drenched Ghastly Ones tone, and no howling feedback like many other external Reverb units.
I once swapped the old original pan with a 3 spring Pan for a Mesa Boogie, 3 minutes later the original pan went right back where it belongs.
I traced my '63 Blond Fender Tube Reverb was once owned by Steve Bartek when he was with the  Strawberry Alarm Clock, ( years before Oingo Boingo)

Swell playing! No chance of seeing You guys in Norway I guess... ;)

Loved the cable show footage and your band playing on the float :)
I live in the surf capital of the U.K Newquay Cornwall on the Atlantic coast.
Don't laugh but, we do have a little surf in the U.K it's just a matter of waiting for it sometimes.
p.s Don't you just love Telecasters. ;D
