Title: RMC / Ghost Piezo PU settings for GR-55
Post by: Elantric on May 29, 2011, 10:56:46 AM
If you have a Piezo hex pickup guitar with GR-55 tracking/ Noise problems with the factory COSM GR-300 patch, its highly recommend you  order the RMC OPT-01 Subsonic Input Filter Board  - details here:
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=3236.msg21120#msg21120 (https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=3236.msg21120#msg21120)

These are RMC's suggested settings for GR-55 with Guitars with RMC Piezo pickups: (Godin , Brian Moore iGuitar, Breedlove)

However, properly adjusting the GK (system) settings is only half the story.
There are also patch-specific parameter adjustments to be performed which make a huge difference in play-feel and tracking results.

For example : CHROMATIC, LEGATO, LEVEL VELOCITY SENS & VELOCITY CURVE TYPE are all patch specific.
If chromatic and legato aren't properly set for what you want to do, you're not going to be happy with the results. I recommend discussing these topics on the VG forum. Some power users should be providing some patch-related preferences by now.

With regards to the usability of the GR-300 sounds (or lack thereof) thats where the Optional User installable "RMC OPT-01 Subsonic Filter"  active jackboard with subsonic filtering does its best work.

https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=3236.0 (https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=3236.0)
The OPT-01 Subsonic Filter features polyphonic subsonic filtering to help eliminate unwanted side-effects due to the subsonic over- sensitivity of the GR-55 when using the analog GR-300 sounds.

I've created a special inquiries folder for this new product and I'll notify everyone who has requested one as soon as we have units ready to ship. The news will also be posted on the VG forums. I'm keeping their moderator informed so members will be provided with accurate information.

I hope the information provided will be helpful.

Best regards,

Just a word of warning about these settings.

These settings can improve the tracking & response for Piezo RMC pick ups using the GR-55 but the 0 sensitivity on all strings effects the level of the COSM modelled sounds big time.

Patches that use model sounds will sometimes have to have the level of the modelled sound within the patch doubled to compensate.

This can be achieved but I made some patches up that had model JB bass assigned to strings 5 & 6, Electric piano on PCM2 (switched on & off via CTL), strings on PCM1 (level controlled with EXP pedal) & the normal (nylon) sound.
This is one of my most useful patches that allows me a great full sound when playing solo.

But with these 0 sensitivity settings the Bass is not loud enough on the modelled sound even with the tone level on 100 & patch level on 200.

To work around this the best solution is to have a number of GK settings set ups & select the appropriate one on each patch through EDIT/MASTER/OTHER/GK SET.

I find that having a GK SET with all the sensitivities to 12 works well for that particular patch I mentioned above.

I'll be using these settings with my Godin shortly, but I was wondering if the settings would need to be impacted when using nylon strings?

I should advise ALL the recommended "GK Settings" for the Roland VG/GR gear we talk about here will be subject to personal preference and playing technique.

As always - you will be required to experiment to identify which settings suit you.

Remember the GR-55 allows you to store 10 different "GK Settings" - and you may discover that even if you own just one guitar, you may find it ideal to have separate GK Settings for PCM Synths, COSM Guitar, and Guitar to MIDI

The current GK Setting can be configured to dynamically change to the appropriate type for each patch.

That is totally right, as I just experimented today.

I got the GR-55 to reduce my gear size and use the Roland PCM I liked so much with the GR-20 and decent COSM (rather than the 3 pedals and multi-effects I was using).
Some patches really require adjusting the GK settings (which was not possible on the GR-20, 1 setting for all) and, as Viramundo explained in this thread, it is the only way to get some COSM models to sounds fair with a low sensivity.

Once again, this forum has helped far beyond what Roland did.

Here are Kennis Russel's recomendations for Godin LGXT

Remember - these settings are very much up to personal preference

Just saw your post - Sorry for the delay.
Great video, I can't believe I didn't see it yet - I will check my settings tomorrow morning (currently I used Sweetwater's and RMC's recommendations).
Once again, thanks for your valuable help!

I just thought that I should mention The concepts above will also apply to the Graptech Ghost system I recently modified my Les Paul with that system and have been using almost the same settings as the suggested RMC settings.

Thanks to all on this thread for helping me sort out all the numerous unwanted notes when playing the synth patches on my Godin LGXT.  Setting the string sensitivities down has virtually eliminated them and hopefully I will not need the OPT01 mod. I've been amazed at the tracking and accuracy on the COSM sounds. Now the unwanted notes are gone I'm looking forward to exploring a bit more.

After a 30 year break from the electric guitar I bought the LGXT and GR55 about 6 months and am really enjoying the different sounds. The versatility is great and adds a lot to the band I've just started playing in. The only issue I've had with the Godin is that the 2nd and 3rd strings are wired the wrong way round. Other posts of the forum have prompted me to go back to the dealer and see whether I ca get it fixed. Not a major problem except for the 12 string patch. Other than that I love the guitar.

Currently playing through the PA with the band and a very old Yamaha 50W for practice but going to try out the Roland 80XL, again on recommendations from this forum.

I would review this thread where we discuss correcting a factory mis-wired Godin :

Thanks for the pointer. Am not a techie and will start with the seller. At least I know there is a solution even if Godin are unresponsive.

Title: Re: RMC / Ghost Piezo PU settings for GR-55

Try this:
"PU"
PU type ;  PIEZO R (or whatever PU type you use)
Scale :  650 MM
PU phase : NORMAL
PU direction : NORMAL
S1/S2 position : NORMAL
MORM PU gain : 0 dB
PIEZO TONE  LOW  :    0
PIEZO TONE HIGH  :   +6

"DIS"
10.0 mm all strings (does not matter GR-55 ignores this for all Peizo PU selections)

"SEN"
Set the sensitivities for all strings just like in the manual

"VEL"
Velocity Dynamics :  2
Play-Feel         :  2 (may vary depending on how you play synth tones)
Low-Velocity Cut  :  8-9

"NUA"
Nuance Dynamics   :  4
Nuance Trim       :  4

"DOW"
Shift   :   0

Now when you set up a synth sound go int the instruments velocity settings and customize them to how you play that sound.
On setting for all instruments will not work. you need to adjust each one to get all the play feels you need. Some sounds you will play with the same velocity that you play guitar and others will take a softer touch. If you get this concept you will never have a bad note(miss-trigger) again.

Hi,

If not does anyone have an appropriate/ working set of `settings ´ ? any help would be useful. thanks

Hi Jomo,
You can set up your Pickup settings very easily for any pickup type by following the instructions I have included in this PDF document. Every guitar is different and every player is different so another persons settings won't work as well as ones you have specific to you and your guitar.

Hi Jim,
thank you so much. I use the GR55 and multiac sa over a Bose L1 II  system. I was hoping this would give me a great sound for the acoustic instruments available. Alas, i get a horrid crackling sound coming from the lower EA nad D strings when using 12 string cosm and the acoustic sound are not coming across as I had hoped. Hopefully i´ll be able to remedy this now with a little tweaking. Thanks.

I'm using these settings below with much success using my Godin xTSA (RMC) and stock GR-55 (rev 1.50 firmware )

Thanks Jim Williams!

On both my xTSA'a - the COSM Modleling sounds most excellent .

This is AFTER I follow Jim Williams Piezo Setup.

In System, Set the GK PU type to:
PU type ;  PIEZO R
Scale :  ST
PU phase : NORMAL
PU direction : NORMAL
S1/S2 position : NORMAL
MORM PU gain : 0 dB
PIEZO TONE  LOW  :    0
PIEZO TONE HIGH  :   +6

"DIS"
10.0 mm all strings (does not matter GR-55 ignores this for all Peizo PU selections)

"SEN"
Set the sensitivities for all strings to "50" average (+/-5  - that is all my strings have sensitivity set in the range between 45-55 .

"VEL"
Velocity Dynamics :  2
Play-Feel         :  2 (may vary depending on how you play synth tones)
Low-Velocity Cut  :  8-9

"NUA"
Nuance Dynamics   :  4
Nuance Trim       :  4

"DOW"
Shift   :   0

Be sure you are using Headphones when forming opinion on the sounds  / patches of your Roland gear.!!

That was so needed for musicians new to GR55. I am a bassist with a Godin A4 Ultra ( built in RMC piezos). I bot an OPt01 and changed settings per rx from RMC. Its much better but I am still getting some slop ( unawanted notes) on PCM tones like Brass, Bari sax etc. From your great post and video I am going to try adjusting the Low Velociy cut--higher number. Anything else you can recommend? Very little available on any website for bass players using the GR55

Once again thanks to all contributors on this forum - I just bought a Godin xtsa and wow! - it is so much better sounding  than my Roland Ready Strat - the Fender / Roland has issues with the input jack and the actual neck so I am waiting for a new neck and the repairs to be done on the electronic on the Fender( this is a new gtr ) - I still like playing the Strat but the xtsa is so much more of a better built and sounding guitar - very glad I purchased it - I may wire the pickups in coil tap or series / parallel as I like the sound and feel of single coil pickups but so far I haven't been able to put his guitar down I am enjoying playing it so much - once again thanks to all for sharing thier experience and information - it makes us all better musicians - Jerry cali

Consider installing Seymour Duncan "TripleShot" PU rings with built in PU coil divide / phase switches.

thanks Elantric  - i was just researching them last night on the web after the gig - going to GC  today, I think I saw a pair in the accessories dept - also  I just put on a set of  Ernie Ball  10 -46  on the xtsa  and did not like the  change in the sound( very tinny on the acoustic pick up) I saved the original strings - so I think they might be 11's which means somebody else had this gtr before me - I'm taking them to my friend who has a micrometer to check out the gauge - it seems picky but for me it's all about the sound - any suggestions would be appreciated in the gauge and make  of strings for the Godin xtsa  -thanks JC
