I have been looking each day hoping that i am just missing it each time i look and i can never find a spring reverb, i dont understand why we have all these nice fender Reverb amps but not one spring reverb effect

is their anything i can do to recreate a spring reverb effect using the GR-55?

gumtown

Not a big fan of spring reverbs myself,
but i guess the plate reverb with the time right up near 10 seconds might get near it.
And maybe a mix of Modulate Delay with the time near 25mS and lots of feedback.

Since I play in a vintage early 60's surf band - I must have  my '63 Fender Spring reverb. - right up first in the signal chain to nail that sound I want.
Mine is very similar to this

I have never found a Roland product that can provide a suitable emulation of the Fender Spring Reverb that can nail that depth and breath of tone. I'm talking about the sound that happens Palm muting at the bridge  and let the Reverb tail be the bulk of your tone - like the Melody in this:

I even tried the Roland  / Fender '63 Reverb Pedal

I found it was not even close

When i cant bring  the real deal to the gig, -the best unit I have found is a Digitech Hardwire RV-7 on the Spring setting - its 85% close -

But Good luck getting that sound with anything that says "Roland" on it.

Check this out.  From Bill Ruppert again - I think something similar could be done using our gear:

See 1:10 or so - the first example.

So, with a 99 where you can order the effects you could do the reverb first into a boost to overdrive it and then into a fender amp model with some kind of slap delay.  Is the 55 capable of ordering the effects in a particular order like the 99?

Man, I love that sound - makes me want to play in a surf band.

YEs at 1:10minutes, Bill has got the sound - though his is a bit more distorted than I prefer - but yes Its in the ballpark -  I 've heard the EHX Holy Grail Reverb is a pretty good, never actually tried one yet. - Too bad the nearest EHX dealer is over 150 miles away from me.

QuoteIs the 55 capable of [re] ordering the effects in a particular order like the 99?

Sadly No - Below is the GR-55 FX Routing path, note  there is no available reverb block which can be placed in front of any AMP Sim on the GR-55

Here is what is available in the GR-55

I'm really curious about the TC Electronics Hall of Fame. Nicer form factor than the EHX, and as with all their new "TonePrint" pedals, you can download new profiles and fly them in over USB. Haven't heard it but it looks really promising IMO.

Not sure about the Hall of Fame but the "TonePrint" chorus didn't fare so well in one users estimation:

Too bad.  I had a TC Electronic BLD for years and a TC Electronic G Sharp which is still in use.

Elantric - what is your surf rig?  Are you using a strat or a Jaguar or Jazzmaster with that reverb unit?  What's your main gigging amp for that kind of music?

Lately I use a Xaviere XV JT-100 (Jazzmaster clone)

http://www.guitarfetish.com/XV-JT100-Offset-Alder-Body-Alnico-JM90-Pickups-pickups-Vintage-Cream-_p_2203.html

I modified it with Locking tuners and Warmoth modified Mustang Bridge , and dual stack Tone . Volume

I was using a DiPinto Galaxie IV, but the Xavier JT100 has more of the classic Jazzmaster tone. Id use a re-issue Jazzmaster - But I need 22 frets!!

I have my rig details here:
Guiutar>Fender Tube Reverb > Barber TonePress > Boss LS-2 as a clean Boost > Cube 80XL on "Blackface" COSM Amp setting or a mid '60''s Fender Vibrolux Reverb with new baffle board loaded with "12 EV EVM12L and 10" Jenson C10Q

Bill Ruppert

I have a real good spring for the VG-99.
I learned how to tame the VG spring.
I will see if I can upload it today.

I bet i could do something with the 55.

Oh that's what I was working on this morning - the problem is that if you pick too hard (something I am prone to do at any given time) it creates that sound you get when you drop a tube reverb unit, that fake BOING sound.

Here's what I did this morning, I had a heck of a lot of fun doing it and it probably took me 15 minutes to do the programming and maybe another 10 to do the "song".

Oh man, I gotta see Elantric's band in person sometime.  Great!

Ah!  When I was out at a memorial day service I wondered about using the limiter to keep the levels low enough to prevent the 'boing' but using B for reverb only; very clever!

That said I'm amazed that the VG really does a great surf sound when it wants to.

Roland should have have an "off" switch for the boing aspect.  After testing, Bill's is cleaner whereas mine sounds more "60s garage rock".  No problem!  Both are equally fun!  Thanks for the patch Bill!

That's a shame.  I got pulled in by the marketing, I guess.  I've never owned any TC Electronics gear myself, but I always got the impression they were exclusively fairly high-end.  I guess their having a go at the more budget-conscious demographic now.

Interesting point in the review about not needing a celebrity player's settings for chorus pedal.  I thought the TonePrint concept was that you could actually download new firmware voicings for the pedal that wouldn't otherwise be possible with the controls, i.e. making the sound of the pedal open-ended for popular requests from owners.

Elantric

One element with the TC Toneprint line of FX  is they feature all these free "Artist presets" as a download - but there is no "TC Toneprint Editor" that mere mortals have access too.
A good discussion of this serious omission by TC Electronics is here:

Sweet demo. Sounds good enough for me and Bobby McGee. Hardly any surf music fans besides the players would have guessed that was a VG-99.  8)
