That chiffy solo sound?  I believe there's a factory patch on the 99 that's that sound but with a lot of echo and delay.  I'll doublecheck.
My music projects online at http://www.aliensporebomb.com/

GK Devices:  Roland VG-99, Boss GP-10, Boss SY-1000.

dblacha

There's no such model or close sounding model in any VG other then VG-8.

Having arrived late to VG technology I am not aware of all terms. What VIO stands for?
A part from that the sound is great.

Thanks

I dug my VG-8 out of storage and recorded some patches.
Slow chromatic scales, HTH.

VG-8 preset D61 SpinVOX, no edits
https://soundcloud.com/ffata-2/vg-8-vio-preset-d61-spinvox

Same preset dry.
All pitch shifting set to zero.
https://soundcloud.com/ffata-2/sets/vg-8-vio-preset-dry

When I first got my 99 I played side by side with the 8 and tried to compare/program some patches into the 99.
Didn't try for the VIO stuff at that time.
I got some for to work my ears. Long ago I purchased Reeves Gabrels' VG-8 patches and that was info I tried to get into my 99.
I'd love to hear Bill cop the VIO sound!

THANK YOU!!!
Wow the effect track sounds so different than the dry.
What effects are on? the effects really bring out the chiff!
This is great thank you for your hard work.
Its just what I needed.

dblacha

at least I found a little time, so I've recorded this short audio: https://soundcloud.com/dblacha/vio/s-k4FyM
sorry for lazy playing ;-)

this is the pure VIO with all FXes and pitch-shift OFF
there is a small addition of a delay and a soft EQ on the recording device
changes in pitch and glissando are made with parameters inside the VIO model (OCTAVE, HARMO, P-BEND)
all VIO params are set to zero except the ATTACK:100
VG model: LP, FRONT, TONE:-50

Bill: the "chiff" sound is definitely at the mode itself, maybe some effects can emphasize it, I do not use any other than reverb / delay fx with the VIO
VG8 / VG88 / VG99 / WP20G / GP10 / SY1000 / GKP4 / US20 / Sustainiac / EBow

Thanks for posting the VG-8 VIO sound demos

Myself _ Ive never been able to duplicate the VG-8 HRM Tones

I lent my VG-8 to member "SLOBLUE" back in 2009  - else Id record some VG-8 HRM samples myself and post those too.

dblacha

Get it back Elantric, this is a rare tool nowadays.
Right, I was never trying to reproduce the VIO, but I was trying it with the PWM and my favorite ambient setup, with a lot of delay and compression - with no success on the VG-88 as on the VG-99.

Not too sure about that
Here in USA they run $150- $250 all day on Ebay

I just purchased a clean 1998 VG-8EX for $169 with shipping ( 2nd one down on pic below) - for backup. There are still many unique sounds  in the old VG-8 and the 1998 VG-8 EX ( the one with the FX Labels above foot switches # 1-3) ) is the best version with all the updates built in.

Thank you.
Great as soon as I have some time I will work on this for the VG-99.

You're right, a lot of them. I was never looking for buying another one. Maybe it's a good idea to have a backup!
I have the original VG-8 but updated with the S-1 expansion.

It'll be great Bill. Now I'm thinking, that maybe it could be done with the fretless model with the slow gear.
However, I'm afraid that the VIO is too well defined sound for replicating. Anyway, good luck :-)

It is definitely a revolutionary piece of gear, and the only Roland piece I have two of.

Bill Ruppert

NEVER under underestimate the power of the VG-99.
I has not left my side since it came out and never will.
Its two voice architecture makes it unstoppable.
I will try, who knows but its always fun to play with the 99.
I hope you have a 99.

Sorry I'm late... ;-)

Here is preset D61 minus FX. Just Flange/DDL/Rvb removed.
https://soundcloud.com/ffata-2/vg-8-vio-preset-d61-spinvox-1
Again HTH.

All pitch related functions are untouched.
the chiff is in the algorithm.
With a little volume its an amazing sound, volume adds a nice oomff to the chiff, pick attack, response to dynamics...
I was disappointed when I first got my 99 and this was not included. (I am lucky to also own two VG-8s, I was gigging steady at one time, needed a backup)

Anyway, I look forward to any new info on this thread!!!

p.s. in context...

This sound was immediately familiar to me. I am sure I've heard it on one of the patches on my VG-88.

I'll have to drag it out and find it.

aliensporebomb

Some of the VG-8 sounds remind me quite a bit of the old PPG Synthesizers by Wolfgang Palm.

Some of those sounds are pretty cool.

I once did a PPG patch on the 99 that had that quality.  I have to see if I can duplicate some of these types of sounds if I can.

Never been a better time to locate gently used examples

Newbies must remember that in 1996 the Roland VG-8 was $2,500.00 with a street price of $1,999.00 !!!

Kevin M

You guys are making me want one of those now!

Rhcole

I like the sound too... but not enough to buy an old unit the size of an entire small pedalboard for one patch.
It is MADDENING though how Roland drops out great ideas and sounds never to be reborn.

Maddening.

Elantric,

why did you move this topic to the "VG-8 Top Things to Know"?

My intention was to try to recover the VIO model and it's a general thread.
I like to try to achieve the algorithm code from Roland or maybe do some "reverse engineering" and then build the VST over the GP-20 hex interface.

Really no one is interested in it?

But OK, I see that we are giving up before we can do something :-(
And waiting for Bill to reproduce the VIO on the VG-99... That's whole our ambition?

there's much more in the VG8 that's worth it
and why Roland drops a lot of the good stuff..
i guess it's for main streaming the units

I'm def. interested in what you can come up with and what can be done about it together,
and if Bill can reproduce some of it.

I'm interested but have just been watching the thread so far.  The VIO is a very cool and unique sound, and the demos that people have been posting are great!  I have never owned a VG-8 and while some part of me is tempted to buy one off eBay, it probably would not be the most practical thing I've ever done. :)

If it could be recreated on a VG-99 that would be sweet!
