Aloha g,

I looooooooove your using your app and 'sending much Aloha to you' for sharing your work.

Just wondering if you have had a chance to check it out with Mac 10.8. (Mountain Lion)

Tanx for any info.

BTW
PC users might want to know about using your software with Win 8 (Metro).

I'm probably behind the curve here. If so, ma bad.

Of course I did my searches but could not find the answers.

Mahalo.

Mountain Lion (and upwards) will only run pure 64-bit apps, all 32 bit kexts have been replaced with 64 bit, so the Lion version of GR-55FloorBoard should run on mountain Lion, not sure if the Roland GR-55 drivers are going to be up with it.
My Lion environment is a bit shot at the moment after disappearing in my Recycle bin, i have Lion running, but for the moment can't install the x-code developer tools (due to my VM-Ware PC not being a genuine apple), so I am looking at buying a real mac maybe.
The mac 32-bit universal x86/ppc builds which I can still build, will still run fine from Tiger (10.4) to Lion (10.7).

As for Windows 8, i had the developer preview installed last year, the windows xp~7 version of GR-55FloorBoard seemed OK with that, which will be fine for desktops, but there is a reduced/compact windows version for handheld portable devices running along side called windows RT which i have not had a look at yet.
The only difference with the desktop version of windows 8 from 7, seems only to be the addition of the Metro app interface (the iPad like scrolling).

Just to date myself:

So glad you are on our side.

So it should work but we don't know if Rolands stuff does? Is that how I should understand it?

If you have a choice - AVOID updating to OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion.

WAIT for Roland to Release a Press Statement  and / or New USB Drivers For OSX 10.8

IT typically takes Roland 3-6 months to release drivers after Apple releases a new version of OSX.

Remember OSX 10.8 is 64 bit and your 32 bit apps and 32 bit drivers for your hardware will not work.

I have already posted the known problems with OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion  - many USB audio interfaces are not working on Mountain Lion.

Here is a Press Statement from Roland regarding OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion

http://www.roland.com/support/article/?q=information&id=62472717

The drivers for OS X Mountain Lion (10.8 ) are different than the drivers for Mac OS X 10.7 or earlier. You must use the dedicated driver for each OS version.

Good News is Roland states they will have OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion USB Drivers for VG-99, GR-55, MicroBR BR-80 - but these have not been released yet (note the dead links in this Roland Press release from earlier today)

What am I missing? If I'm reading the list correctly it says click "here" for compatible driver/librarian? Now I am getting an error when I click the link but isn't this list saying it is compatible?

I will wait though!!

Yes - that is a dead URL Link

Bottom line -

* Roland has made a press release stating the fact that dedicated USB drivers are required for using their devices on Mountain Lion

* However at this hour the new Roland USB Drivers have not been released
This is why the official Roland Press release below (at 7:00AM pacific time July 25, 2012) has nothing but dead links

http://www.roland.com/support/article/?q=information&id=62472717

* The URL links to the new OSX 10.8 driver will become active AFTER Roland releases the USB Drivers

I expect this to take several weeks or months.

For example, it took about 3 months for Roland to finally release the official VG-99 USB driver for OSX 10.7 Lion, long after they made a similar press statement.

If you want to take a vacation from doing audio work with your Roland gear - go ahead and upgrade to OSX 10.8

Is this wrt USB audio, or are MIDI functions (i.e., VG Editor) broken too?

Both MIDI and AUDIO I/O with All Roland gear are dead  / non functional with OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion
Correct - this means No VG-99 Editor or GR-55 Floorboard Editor, or USB Audio connection to your DAW software (Logic, Reaper, Protools 10).

We must wait for Roland to release 64 bit drivers (the only choice) for  OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion.

This could take weeks / months

Ugh. I expected the USB audio issues, since those are showing up elsewhere (e.g. NI). I hoped the MIDI would still work. Why can't it just be class-compliant for MIDI?

A class compliant external midi device would work for midi only apps, but there is no guarantee that the software will work until it's tested, even the VG Editor could possibly have some 32 bit code in it, which with the Mountain Lion and upwards, will not support in any way. At least that is one good thing in Microsoft's favour, there 64 bit OS is still 32 bit backward compatible.

I like the spell checker here too..  ;)

Does the editor work with win 7? I may just use my win partition when I need to edit patches.

Yes, of course it does, windows 7 users make up 92% of the download stats.
The windows version works with windows Xp, 2000, vista, 7, 8 and either 32 bit or 64 bit.

Your other option is to get a USB/Midi adapter, which either is a driverless class compliant one, or a USB/Midi adapter which has mac 10.8 drivers already.
The GR-55 is quite happy to work with a midi device adapter on windows, mac and Linux.

Any recommendations on a cheaper adapter?

Roland/Edirol ones have always worked for me, i am not sure about for the mac though.
But I can tell you to avoid this super cheap one, and it's clones

I don't imagine it would be an issue but just in case...I'm setting this up on my win 7 partition...once I get the USB Midi...I'll go back to my mac OS...does the switching back and forth on the OS's have an impact on the ROland?

I am mistaken in beleiving the new 64 bit only operating system (Mountain Lion) will only run 64 bit apps, it seems that most old 32 bit software will run on that, just the hardware that has to be 64 bit compliant.

Yeah, the editor runs, but can't find the device.  >:(

I'd like to upgrade, because I like 10.8 on my other computers. Hopefully Roland won't take as long this time.

Looks like the Roland UM-One (midi to usb) is 10.8 ready now....so I can get this and use the software to program my GK55 inside the mac?
