QuoteI'll be building my second midi controller soon, does the GA-FC do anything that a midi controller cannot achieve with sysex?

depends on if you understand electronic  hardware with soldering and coding skills

else the PrimovaSound MIDX-20 offers substantial Katana MIDI Control

there are many options

and everyone has a different idea of what is the  "end goal".

Scatabrain is the one person who has used Steve Hirsch's Katana MIDI Interpreter and loaded into a Beaglebone Black on the the Katana USB port, and via 5 pin MIDI he is using a FCB-1010 foot controller to access more the the presets.

IMHO - Perhaps we each have different visions of what the "end goal" is for  all this activity?

DIY solution, for embedded computers (Raspberry PI / Beagle Bone) to support the path that Scatabrain is pursuing?

Turn key solution for Katana owners? ( PrimovaSound MIDX-20 with updated Katana MIDi interpreter)

Katana FX Floorboard with laptop always connected?
IMHO - most Katana users will soon realize they will hit a wall for using our katana DSP MIDI SYSEX access discoveries,  without adding a third party computer or small embedded computer to make full use of this in live use.

My "vision" is install a BeagleBone Green Wireless in a small box on the back of the Katana
https://beagleboard.org/green-wireless

this will connect to the Katana USB port.

Since the  BeagleBone Green Wireless supports MIDI over Bluetooth Low Energy (MIDI BLE), a wireless MIDI controller could be employed to become a floorboard controller for the "Expanded Katana"

For debug, Ive acquired a few  MIDI over Bluetooth Low Energy (MIDI BLE), a wireless MIDI controllers for testing

but it might be simple to use a FCB-1010 with a another  BeagleBone Green Wireless board on the "front of stage controller" end as well  - to wirelessly communicate with the Beaglebone located on the Katana Amp.

BeagleBone Green Wireless is $45 each

LOL!  Yes, my "user" community is just that:  One user :-).  One frustration I haven't worked around yet is the relatively high latency of bulk patch change over sysex.  It's a bit noisy (thumps and volume glitches) and too slow for my liking.

Have you tried the 'patch loader' version of Katana FxFloorBoard?
https://sourceforge.net/projects/fxfloorboard/files/experimental/katana_patch_loader_setup.exe/download

You will need a windows laptop/tablet, and a regular midi foot controller.
Plug the Katana USB to the computer running patchloader, plug the midi or USB foot controller to the computer,
open your favourite 123 patch bundle of Tone Studio Katana patches, and have access to all 123 + 5 Katana built in = (128 patches)
with midi control from your foot pedal.
The Patch Loader also has 16 assigns built in 8 global assigns, and 8 per patch assigns (which can be saved into each of the 123 patches).
All the assigns can control any Katana parameter.

Still find it odd you cannot control the, GR55, Control pedal via MIDI. I had to hardwire mine to my pedalboard

whippinpost91850

That's why I have a bypass switch on my GR55 and hard wired ( a RJ5 data cable) an expression and a switch to my pedalboard to control these functions,
as these are the only 2 switch/ pedals I use live

Maybe this is what you seek, an all in one DIY controller by Sixeight,
which can be custom coded to your required devices, it also reads data out of the pedals too,
such as patch and effect names.
