My first advice for recording with a D.A.W. would be Reaper. It's available for Windows and Mac. It's not free but it has a 60 day free trial. Nothing is disabled, you're able to save projects and do everything else you need to do. If you're still using it after 60 days you'll get a pop up reminder letting you know the trial is up and suggesting that you pay for it. The price is very reasonable, only $60.00 for a discounted license or $225.00 for a commercial license. However if you want a fully functional genuinely free D.A.W. you should check out Tracktion. They've made version 5 free available to everybody and it runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.

If you want to check them out here's the Reaper website: http://www.reaper.fm/
Here's the Tracktion website: https://www.tracktion.com/products/t5-daw  Good luck with your recordings.  :)

Yes Reaper is the way to go and the $60 dollar license is well worth it. There are a few essential plugins to get and Reaper has a built-in plugin VST bridge.

on to the free stuff.....
1. MT Powered drums- http://www.powerdrumkit.com/
2. Varity of sound plugins are good free plugins- https://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/downloads/
3. TOKYO DAWN LABS also has some great free plugins- http://www.tokyodawn.net/tokyo-dawn-labs/

that should get you up and running.
