I'd seek a 1998 VG-8EX. Has improved audio and more memory

I located a used one for $180 2 years ago

In my opinion yes

The VG-8EX electronics are newer and it includes all the S1 updates

Today, Often you can find a used VG-8EX for similar cost as the S1 update board

Although our forum is responsible for driving used VG-8EX prices higher than they were in 2013

I found this on the net from Gary Cook:
From Gary Cook....

Hi Aure,

Yes, I did program the sounds for Sting's new album but he would not let me
keep the sounds. It was very cool. Sting uses the VG8 with a Fender Strat
and a Yamaha G50 Guitar Synth Controller with Yamaha FS1R and
MU100 sound modules. He also uses an RMC pickup on his bass with the Yamaha
G50. The G50 is incredible!
I met one guy who is triggering the Roland GR30 with the Yamaha G50! It's
fast.

I have the VG-8EX with 3 M-512E cards and the rare VG-8 sound ROM cards. I think that you can find the presets here.

Yeah, sounds interesting. Right now, besides the VG-8, I have a Roland GR-S and GR-D pedals, an old Korg Z3 (the fastest 24 pin guitar synth ever made, with the same technology as the Yamaha G50 and Terratec Axon). I'm looking for some old synths like the GR-50/GR-1/GR-09/GR-30.

Very rare version of "a 1000 years" with vg-8 riff and vocales isolated from a live DVD.
